If you're doubting whether to buy this movie on account of the slamming it got from critics and it's poor box office performance, please just give me a second to explain why you should watch this movie. Quite simply, it is awesome. Gore Verbinski, director of the first three installments in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, delivers another stunning, action-packed, fast-paced spectacle. There is rarely a moment the action lets up and we are treated to some truly spectacular sequences: the final train chase being one of the best shot scenes i have scene on film this year. The script and story, from the writers of the Pirates series, is also brilliant, blending good old fashioned western with high adventure, some elements of fantasy and some great humour (particularly from Depp, as usual). The cast is equally brilliant with Depp delivering another weird and hilarious performance; Armie Hammer makes a great Lone Ranger and he and Depp have great chemistry; William Fichtner (of Prison Break) makes a great villain and brit Ruth Wilson does her underwritten role justice and Helena Bonham Carter is as masterful as always in a small but great role. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean, Prince of Persia, The Rock and dozens more action-packed movies) brings his usual tropes of epic action and Hans Zimmer provides a stirring, thumping good soundtrack. Though it may be slightly over long at two and a half hours i can honestly say i didn't want the movie to end.
This is a great family movie, wrongly slammed by critics. If you're looking for a movie to sit down and escape into, then this is it.
Highly recommended.
The DVD extras are very poor, a few deleted scenes and an amusing gag reel are all that you get. This is a movie made for blu-ray, so if you are willing to invest in a slightly higher price i would opt for blu-ray where you get more extras.

3.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable movie. Not as bad as some say., 15 Oct 2013
This review is from: After Earth [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
M Night Shyamalan has had a tough time of it over the past few years. His latest movies have been met with bad reviews and average box office returns. The days of the Sixth Sense seem a distant memory when you look at the Last Airbender, which was deserved of its woeful reviews, because it was a woeful movie. But to say After Earth is woeful would be wrong. Though it may not be the best sci-fi movie of the year, it is an entertaining movie, with plenty going for it. The direction is brilliant, for a start. Night brings his unique style to this movie and at times it is breathtaking (the final confrontation with the alien, the sky dive, the landscapes and jungle chases). Equally as brilliant is James Newton Howard's score which only adds to the epic scope of the landscapes. There are some spectacular special effects in this movie, too, and there isn't a massive over use of them that it detracts from the realism. It is in the acting that this movie fumbles. A usually reliable Will Smith is too stoic and wooden (even if his character is supposed to be) and his delivery of lines sounds very awkward, but perhaps that is the very average script. Even worse is Jaden Smith, who cannot act. Full stop. Perhaps if someone else had taken the role of the son then this movie would have got another star. As it is, Jaden saps the life out of pretty much every scene he is in (which is most of them).
But, overlooking the acting, and the disappointingly average script, this is an enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half. Plenty of bursts of action, some epic landscapes, great directing and an awesome soundtrack make this a decent sci-fi movie and in no way the disaster some reviewers and critics would have you believe.
In the way of extras are three featureless which focus on the father son relationship, the world and mythology of the story. The features are pretty short and nothing special, but they do add some value to the story and understanding how Will and Jaden worked together on the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, dark crime drama, edging into the supernatural., 26 Sep 2013
Since series one of Whitechapel aired i have been hooked. Combining intricate plots with a great cast of characters and some brilliant direction, this series offers first class entertainment. Far darker than mos crime dramas, Whitechapel revolves largely around crimes that emulate or are similar to crimes commuted in the past, the more macabre and gruesome of murders. Rupert Penry Jones plays Detective Inspector Joseph Chandler brilliantly, getting the OCD, intelligent characters down to a tee. At his side are Phil Davis' DS and Steve Pemberton's bumbling but brilliant expert on all things macabre. Like series 3, this series deviates from the original three parters to offer us three two part stories, each focusing on a different killer. This series is far darker and more gruesome than its predecessors, but don't let that deter you. Whitechapel offers too much fine acting, brilliant stories, fast pace, intrigue and superb direction to be missed. This series also has another level of intrigue with the introduction of possible supernatural elements, that are hinted at and littered throughout all of the episodes, creating another mystery in itself.
I highly recommend this series for fans of the prior episodes and those who enjoy dark, gothic crime drama. Be warned, those of a nervous disposition may want to avoid. But please, watch this. It is some of the highest quality crime drama on TV in years and runs rings around most shows of its kind.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a class of its own. Unbelievably good., 22 Sep 2013
I'm a massive fan of such shows as CSI, Castle, The Mentalist and a lot of other crime procedural dramas. But never being much of a fan of Silence of the Lambs i was a bit reluctant to watch this show. But i'm eating my words now. Sometimes a tv show comes along that is just insanely good (CSI, Lost, Alias, Fringe, Prison Break). Hannibal is one of those shows. In fact, i'd go so far as to say it is the best new show i have seen in years. Taking place before the events of all the books and movies, this show tells the story of Hannibal and Will Graham who are in the employ of the FBI, helping to track and catch serial killers. Littered throughout are hints and forebodings to Hannibal's future. But rather than copying the movies, this expands and develops Hannibal's character.
The biggest thing this show has going for it, is its cast. Hugh Dancy is great as the paranoid, mentally unstable Will Graham who gets in the minds of the serial killers to help understand and then catch them. Mads Mikkelesen is equally brilliant as Lecter, the psychiatrist assigned to help Will Graham. Laurence Fishburne is a great choice as Jack Crawford, head of the unit investigating the murders. He plays a character somewhat similar to the one he did in CSI, but far more tormented and ruthless. The guest stars are all equally great, Gillian Anderson is sexy as Lecter's own shrink and Eddie Izzard has fun as a crazy serial killer.
The second best thing about this show is the writing. Every single episode is masterfully written: full of tense dialogue, intriguing plot twists, gruesome, creative murders and an unrelenting pace. The production values are some the highest i have ever seen in a tv show. Each episode looks like a big-budget movie. The soundtrack is creepy and elegant, adding to the feel of the show and generating some great tension- especially in scenes involving Graham and Lecter. Every episode is also brilliantly directed.
Overall this is an awesome show. As addictive as Lost and CSI, but definitely in a class of its own. Not one episode is even slightly boring or mundane. But, be warned, there are some pretty intense, scary scenes and plenty of gore and horrific murders here. Those of a nervous disposition should either skip it or man-up. I can't say enough of how brilliant this show is. Definitely in my top ten, maybe even top five. And with a second season already in the works, i think this could be the next big show on tv.

Highly, highly recommended.

Dream Weaver: 1 (Dream Weaver Novels)
Dream Weaver: 1 (Dream Weaver Novels)

Edition: Paperback
Price: 7.30

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read. Perfect for fans of YA paranormal., 9 Sep 2013
Whilst this is not the genre i usually read, the unique concept caught my attention. In a market that is cluttered with Twilight rip offs, Dreamweaver offers up something new to the tiring Paranormal genre. The greatest strength of this book lies in its characters. The author has particular skill in developing her cast and not sacrificing well rounded characters for action. The first in a series, this book offers an intriguing story, characters and a readable writing style that mirrors the unique plot and ideas. Though i'm no huge fan of romance, the author got the balance just right and it was never overbearing or in your face.
For those looking for something more unique than the flood of Twilight wannabe series on the market, this is a perfect choice.

There is a real sense of atmosphere in each of the stories included in this collection, spooky, eerie, often disturbing there is rarely a moment when chills won't be running up your spine. If you are a fan of Stephen King or Dean Koontz then you'll find much to enjoy here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exhilirating, action packed and wrongly panned by critics, 30 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: John Carter [DVD] (DVD)
John Carter was ripped to shreds by the critics and it didn't meet its expectations at the box office despite making over a quarter of a billion dollars. It was all over the news that John Carter was the flop of the decade for disney and many critics were merciless in their reviews.
But if you've got any sense you won't listen to the critics and you'll ignore the fact that it didn't do as well as people thought at the box office. The reason to ignore all that is John Carter is a brilliant film, definitely in my top ten new films of the past couple of years. It tells the story of John Carter (believe it or not) who was a soldier in the civil war who stumbles across an ancient cave and is transported to mars. What follows is his adventures there as he is caught in the middle of a war for the planet Barsoom (mars).
Taylor Kitsch is the eponymous hero and overall he does a decent job, handling both action and the more emotion heavy scenes pretty well. But its Lynn Collins and Willem Dafoe who play the princess and a gangly alien chief respectively, who make the biggest impression. Joining the cast are Ciaran Hinds (Aberforth from Potter) Dominic West (Johnny English Reborn, the Wire) James Purefoy (Solomon Kane)and Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes).
Andrew Stanton directs and he handles most of the film very well, taking advantage of the wondrous Barsoom landscape with sweeping camera shots and bringing a very epic sense to the whole film. However, his handling of the action heavy scenes is a bit clumsy, though this doesn't really impact enjoyment of the film as a whole. Special note must also be paid to the special effects which are the best i have seen in a film in a long time. The alien races and creatures are so detailed they appear real and the landscapes and cities are magnificently rendered. Also, the battle scenes are gripping, particularly the aerial ones.
Overall this is a brilliant film with very minor flaws. There was not a single moment that i was bored in this film, the action is fast, the plot well paced and the characters engaging and well acted. Barsoom looks awesome and the mythology is well planned and sets up ideas and possibilities for (hopefully) future installments. So please consider getting this film, it is filled with rip roaring entertainment for all the family. Action, adventure, humour, monsters... what more could you want.
The extra features are poor, a featurette on the Borroughs books that ties in with making the film and a commentary by director Andrew Stanton.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, funny, very entertaining. And better than the second one., 28 Dec 2012
This review is from: Men in Black 3 [DVD] [2012] (DVD)
Everyone was dissapointed with Men in Black 2 and the long years that stretched on after its release without a sequel held little hope for Smith and Jones to return for a third outing. But now they're back and with a sequel worthy of the brilliant first film.
The story takes the risk of dabbling with time travel and thankfully does it very succesfully. We learn that long ago, K locked away a dangerous alien who has now escaped and wants revenge for his lost arm and years of imprisonment. Without spoiling anything, J must time travel in order to ensure K's survival and protect the planet from an invasion of Boglodites.
As in the previous two films, Smith and Jones have great chemistry and their banter is as witty as ever. This time round, though, we get to see K as a younger agent, played with uncanny resemblence by Josh Brolin. There are plenty of other new faces, including Emma Thompson as O, head of Men in Black and Jemaine Clement who has enourmous fun as the villian, Boris.
Also returning alongside Smith and Jones is Barry Sonnefield as director who delivers fast paced action and the usual weirdness. The aliens are also brilliantly done again by Rick Baker and Steven Spielberg's fingerprints are all over this film as he returns as executive producer.
The time travel plot could have been a disaster but it's actually very well done and we get some great twists and turns as a result. There is a particularly great twist at the end about J. The set pieces are brilliantly inventive and a chase sequence on some weird motorbikes stands out as one of the best sequences of all three films.
Overall, fans will breathe a sigh of relief at getting the sequel the second one should have been and newcomers will be caught up in the breathless action, crazy monsters and witty banter between Smith and Jones and Smith and Brolin.
As for specila features there is a funny bloopers reel, a decent featurette and a music video, but this is hardly the ultimate edition for fans who want in depth looks at the creature design, props and plot development.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping action, breath-snatching entertainment, 28 Dec 2012
This review is from: The Bourne Legacy [DVD] (DVD)
Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon delivered a great trilogy, even if Greengrass couldn't keep the camera still for more than a few seconds all three of the films were action packed and very entertaining. Now i know a lot of people will disagree with this review but i actually preffered Legacy to the first two films in the Damon trilogy, and liked it as much as Ultimatum.
Jeremey Renner proved himself a great actor in Avengers and Mission Impossible ghost protocol, and so he handles the action like a pro. Racheal Weisz is a far better female lead than Franka Potente and Edward Norton is brilliant alongside some old, but brief, appearances by characters we know from the Bourneiverese.
Set simultanesouly against the events of the Damon trilogy, the Bourne Legacy follows Aaron Cross who is being hunted down, like Jason Bourne. Rachael Weisz's character is dragged along when she becomes a target as well. Admittedly the plot is simpler than its predecessors but oddly i don't think that hindered my enjoyment at all. What's great about this new addition is Tony Gilroy who is far supreior to Greengrass as a director, he can hold the camera still but handles the action very well, making it urgent and involving for the audience. The action set pieces are exhilarating; the climax chase scene and dash across the rooftops of a Phillipines city is stirring and gripping.
Overall, die hard fans of the Damon/Greengrass trilogy may be dissapointed with the simple plot but those who aren't trying too hard to make comparisons will undoubtedly be gripped by the stirring action, brilliant direction and star turns from Renner and Weisz. Froget the first trilogy, don't try to compare them and enjoy it.
Unfortunately there are absolutely no extras on this DVD edition at all except a UV copy. For special features you'll need to invest in the steelbook edition or perhaps wait for an extended or special edition that may be released in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A suspensful, masterly acted courtroom thriller, 22 Nov 2012
This review is from: A Few Good Men [DVD] (DVD)
"You can't handle the truth!"

The truth is that this film goes above and beyond a five star rating. Tom Cruise turns in a brilliant, if not his best, performance as a lawyer in the navy who assigned to the case of two marines who have been charged with the murder of one of their fellows. But all is not as it seems as, whilst Cruise works on the case, scheming Colonel, Jack Nicholson, plots to usurp him. The plot is masterful, combining gripping courtroom scenes, character driven stories and a palpable tension that begins in the first fifteen minutes and doesn't relent to the stirring, inspirational last few minutes. Along with Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Pollack, Kevin Bacon and Jack Nicholson all deliver practically flawless performances as their respective characters. Rob Reiner (Misery) directs with an eye for making the coutroom scenes tense and engrossing and the creates a suspensful build up that will drag you into the story. Where some courtroom thrillers can be laborious and convoluted, A Few Good Men is never boring and i found myself wanting it to run over the two hour run time.
If you enjoy films that grip you and draw you in, with awesome performances and a inspirational ending, then you won't go far wrong with this one. I can't rate it highly enough. One to watch, watch again, then again for good measure.
