Connolly does it again! This story of the residents of a relatively short road that runs off Haverstock Hill in NW London, focuses on the relationships between the adult shopkeeper-residents of the road those of their children. A tale both poignant and amusing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forster on top form, 11 April 2014

Margaret Forster's novels are always worth reading, not least because each one is different -- she doesn't follow any kind of format. This book travels back and forth between the present, when the main character is a psychiatric social worker dealing with young girls judged to have social or behavioural problems, and a decade or two earlier, when she herself was growing up. Her relationship with her only cousin, a pretty, kind girl 8-10 years older, and her family are tainted by her reaction to their gestures of friendship. A thought-provoking and intriguing study of family relationships.

Oracle Bones: A Journey Between China and the West
Oracle Bones: A Journey Between China and the West
by Peter Hessler
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding analysis of present-day China, 1 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although published in 2002, this book remains timely and gives one of the most perceptive descriptions of contemporary China that I have come across. Hessler combines sections focusing on the country's history and the development of its current written language (a fascinating topic in its own right) with descriptions of the progression of his former college students in Fuling in the late 1990s. This is definitely a must-read for all those interested in the history and development of this amazing country!

Robert Harris is always worth reading, but I think this is without doubt one of his best. Using all the known facts about the Alfred Dreyfus case (1895-1906), he has constructed a novel which, although you know (or can look up) the ending, is none the less fascinating. Captain Dreyfus, a French army officer, is charged with spying for the Germans and condemned to life in solitary confinement on Devil's Island, forbidden to speak to anyone, even his guards. Another army officer, George Picquart, when promoted to the Statistical Section of the Intelligent Department, comes to believe, somewhat reluctantly at first, that the charges on which he was convicted do not stand up. However, when appraised of his misgivings his superior officers are puzzlingly reluctant to pursue the matter. Picquart persists, however, thereby putting his own career with the army at risk.

A desk or wall calendar with easily visible date numbers and sufficient space to write in. If it's hanging from a wall there's an erasable board to write reminders on and a pen with which to write them. And all this at an extremely reasonable cost.

Wonderfully soft, comfortable outdoor ankle boots that feel more like slippers! I wanted a shoe with cushioning in the sole but which was also stylish and not too heavy, and this ticks one all the boxes. AND it comes in other colours -- so it might not be my only purchase!

Jesus' mother Mary is the narrator of this novella. She reveals her apprehensions about the direction her beloved son appears to have taken and explains her reasons. Much food for thought here!

5.0 out of 5 stars #2 of the Shardlake series, 3 Jan 2014

Samson's hunchback Tudor lawyer-cum-detective Shardlake is one not to miss! This is the second of 4 or 5 of these, and is set in 1541, when Henry VIII is deciding that he made a mistake marrying Ann Boleyn. But all that is a background to a series of attacks and murders which Matthew Shardlake is called upon to resolve. Not to be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable!, 3 Jan 2014

Sansom's series featuring Tudor lawyer-detective Matthew Shardlake goes from strength to strength. Not only are the plots well constructed and gripping, but the author's descriptions of the sights, sounds (smells!) and lifestyles of London citizens during the reign of Henry VIII are outstanding -- you feel as if you're right there in the midst of it all! This is the third of the series and can certainly be read separately, but if you haven't read #1, 'Dissolution', or #2, 'Dark Fire', why not start at the beginning?
