Discs Degrade Over Time, 3 July 2014
These are MID RITEK-BR3-00
I have written successfully to over 100 of these discs. All of them verified correctly. All of them I have retrieved files from. I was quite happy with them for the price.
However every single one of these discs that have been written to from over six months ago have now failed, They are either completely unreadable, or portions of the disc are unreadable leading to the files being corrupted.
Using Opti Drive Control to do a quality scan of the discs, newly written discs have high error rates but are still readable (LDC av 134, max 1104; BIS av 2.5, max 31). However if the disc is scanned six months later, the errors have more than doubled indicating that the discs are degrading (LDC av 273.96, max 5910; BIS av 5.33, max 90). This level of errors have made all the discs unreadable in the three different makes of Blu Ray writers I own.
All discs had been kept at room temperature in disc cases, away from sunlight.
Other discs I have used which have Verbatimu and CMCMAGBA3 MIDs are all fine.
If you have purchased and used these discs, I would recommend testing them to see if you can retrieve all your data off them.
