3.0 out of 5 stars A little tedious, 6 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was disappointed with this series having enjoyed the earlier ones, especially the first three.
The interaction with the judge and Jo Mills seems overdone and quickly becomes tedious, not to say breaking the bounds of credulity when both are appointed to the court in the Hague for the same case!!
There also seemed to be a great repetition of 'section 4 subjection 2(b)' type of responses. It all seemed contrived.
A pity because there are some interesting plot lines, which is why I gave this three stars instead of 2.

1.0 out of 5 stars No details, irrelevant filming, lacking in information, 19 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Story of Maths [DVD] (DVD)
Most of the other people who reviewed this DVD must have been watching a different 'series'. Marcus du Sautoy is no Bronowski.

This is tedious in the extreme, lots of video of completely irrelevant locations (boys sitting on a wall, walks round markets) - but nothing to do with mathematics or the mathematicians being discussed. There really is no point in looking at the screen when playing the DVD (hardly any point listening to the words.)

There is hardly any detail about the mathematics, just that it was important and a 'great' discovery. Surely solving quadratics could have been explained!

And there is very, if any information about the mathematicians.

We are told that Asian mathematician's discovered many aspects of mathematics before it was discovered in the West and they do not receive the recognition they deserve. Having said that I am not sure what else the DVD provides.

For presentation about mathematics, a very precise subject, the most popular phrase in the program seems to be 'legend has it'.

I distinctly remember one scene where Sautoy rides a horse across a plain, but I cannot remember what significance that had to the text or the subject mathematics. The DVD is full of such incidents.

Lightweight trivia at best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, 22 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A thoughtful and very enjoyable film.

I liked the acting and the script, a good way to spend a pleasant evening.

Yes there are some hard-to-believe moments (hence the 4 stars), but overall a nice way to spend an evening and a film I shall watch again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Brilliant in Concept and Execution, 15 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this DVD fascinating, entertaining and educational. History coming alive through the research into the lives of village people bringing together likely explanations of daily activities and social and philosophical reform.

How marvelous to be able to sit back and enjoy intelligent communication through the spoken and written word and historical artifacts.

This series has brought so much pleasure for me that 5 stars is quite appropriate.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed more about Monarchs than Britain, 20 Nov 2011
The title says a history of Britain and I was looking forward to seeing how the country grew and declines over the centuries. However, Schama seems to discus only the monarchs at key moments in the development of the empire. For Elizabeth I almost the entire program was devoted to the quarrel between Elizabeth and Mary, nothing about what was going on in the country and around the world.

Shortly after this episode I stopped watching, so apologies if the later programmes detailed Britain and not just the monarchy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roger Marshall Again, 4 Jan 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
From the description of the series (I did not see it on tv), I was dubious about this DVD. However, having watched most of the episodes I have found it very entertaining and like other Roger Marshall work, thought provoking.
Leigh Lawson provides an interesting character with human weaknesses and strengths, I liked his acting, and that of most of the supporting roles.
There are many parallels with Public Eye, especially the storylines - more violence perhaps, and that is not a bad thing in my opinion.
There is a down-to-earth quality that is missing from many of more 'polished' tv productions and this series is all the better for that.
Highly recommended for those who like a little thinking with their entertainment and a 'thank you' to all involved with the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 10 Aug 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was looking forward to seeing John Thaw in this series, a series I have not seen on TV.

But after the first two episodes I did not find the characters at all engaging, I could not get interested in them at all.

Later in the episode, when his son dies, I found the following scenes lacking authenticity. It was as if he had lost a pet dog or a cat - not his son. He did not seem to grieve at all after the first impact.

The various sub-plots were rather laboured and predictable - dialogue not too good either.

A very mediocre series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous film, 13 July 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Dish [DVD] (DVD)
This is one of my all time favorite films. Certainly in my top ten.

But I recognize that this is not the case for others.

I like the film because of the characters and humor, the portrayal of life in a small town and of a life devoid of car chases and shootouts.

It is also one of the films that makes me laugh a lot. The kind of humor I like, not vicious or slapstick, but gentle and warm humor sympathetically invoked.

The film is about a radio telescope located in a sheep farm in Australia and the pivotal role it played in the beaming of video of the moon landing to earth. The characters are wonderful and I would regard as normal people (not offbeat as some critics have said). A typical small town community playing its part inadvertently in one of the most impressive achievements in space exploration.

My enjoyment of this film is in complete contrast to what many online film critic sites regards as a good film these days, namely the crop of animation films that seem to top the critics charts. This film is about real small town gentle people of which the world contains many but which is not that popular as a film subject and good actors handling an interesting story.

Please make more films like this...
