3.0 out of 5 stars OK but inaccurate, 2 Dec 2012

The meter is easy to use with sharp pins that push into the wood. Instructions are a joke, badly translated.
You need to have freshly split the wood to measure. The outside can go 20% below the inside very quickly and give a false reading.
The meter is not very robust but ok for the price.
The big issue I have is how inaccurate it is.
I measured a freshly split series of logs at 36%. I then dried one on the stove top until it wasn't changing each day.
The actual moisture was 47% (more typical for freshly felled timber). This was from a Rowan, so a fairly typical hardwood.

Not sure how much use it will be if it is this far out from reality

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly honest, 13 Nov 2012

A very genuine attempt to deal with the issues of maintaining a love life in a long marriage where distractions with kids and jobs all conspire to get in the way.
He writes in a clear journalistic style which isn't great literature but isn't irritating either. He surveys the whole world of sex and they try most things.
This was both informative and interesting. Frank and honest about relationships. I suspect this book will make you think about your own approach to sex in your long term relationship.
Don't read "365 nights" instead. This is hugely better. I didn't wish to kill him at the end!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 11 Nov 2012

What a terrible writer. It is all from her point of view and her small minded approach to life is simply not sustainable for a book's length.
The only thing she did interesting was to suggest having sex everyday for a year with her husband. Nothing else about her is interesting.
Even the hoped for insights into the impact on her relationship are submerged in a load of tedious detail and one of the most irritating writing styles I've ever come across.
Thankfully I only paid 99p for the Kindle so can delete it without wasting part of a tree.
"Just do it" is a much better book.

5.0 out of 5 stars practical exercises, 21 Nov 2011

This book presents chess boards at various stages of games. You are only told who is to move next. It gives no idea of whether you are looking for a knight fork, developing pawn structure or mating in three. In other words it's like playing real games. I can get very good at finding knight forks if the book has a whole chapter on them. This dots around which can be disconcerting but means that you quickly learn to evaluate the board and find your best idea. Even better, often the initially attractive attack doesn't work out, so you need to be able to think it through.

One of the best books of exercises for actually learning to think rather than by rote.

3.0 out of 5 stars Powerful but patchy, 17 Mar 2009

This review is from: Trapped in the Mirror (Paperback)
I read the other reviews before reading this book. During the first half, I wondered what everyone was talking about as it seemed to give a very powerful explanation and descriptions of living with narcissism. About half way through though the writing falls apart. Towards the end she tells you that she suffered a head injury during the writing of the book, which may well explain the patchy writing.

Overall though the first half and the end carry it through IMHO and it is a valuable though often repetetive description of the problem of narcissism in our society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent grammar book, 24 Dec 2007

This is the best French grammar book I've found. Ideal for A level students. Packs a huge amount in. Printed on high quality glossy paper and not an inch wasted. Lots of exercises with a couple of pages of learning between. Covers a lot of ground and very thoroughly. Not a textbook of grammar but ideal for those with GCSE level who wish to progress to A level standard. The exercises are very up to date and don't have that dated feeling that so many grammar books have. Excellent value for what it contains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent work book, 24 Dec 2007

Most grammar books cover a lot very quickly with just a couple of examples. This book covers a smaller area but very thoroughly. The workbook format encourages you to write on the book but at it's minimal cost, that's fine. Fairly heavy going, as you'd expect but by the time you've worked your way through this, you will have a good A level understanding of pronouns/prepositions. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Vocab book ever!, 28 Sep 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've tried lots of french vocab books and they are generally dry lists of nouns and verbs. This book is laid out logically by subject, with easier words then more difficult at the end. Each word has an idiomatic sentence and it makes great reading. The only vocab book you'll ever need unless very specialised.
