The first album from the Glasgow band and in my view the best! The guitarist,Hugh Nicholson was in the band Marmalade for a couple of years before forming Blue with Ian MacMillan and drummer Timmy Donald has worked with Richard Thompson and John Cale!
The album is a mixture of great ballads and some fine rockers,"Little Jody",which was a single and "Sitting on a fence",plus the happy/loopy "Skye banana boat song"
My favourite track is "I wish I could fly" with a beautiful guitar solo from Nicholson
A fine band!

Any reviews I have read on this album are very negative which I find surprising,I think it's superb from start to finish,OK,it's nothing like the Buffalo Springfield,to me it's a jazz-fusion album. The first track with Ricky James Matthews on vocals sounds similar to Traffic's jazzy period,Shoot out at the fantasy factory and Low spark of the high heeled boys!
The whole album has a nice groove to it.Palmer, like Neil Young, was making music his way much to the annoyance of his record company!
Other musicians who played on this album -
Ed Roth-Organ,Danny Ray-Congas and four members of Kaleidoscope!
R.I.P. Bruce.

This album has been worth the wait. You'll never hear better versions of "Down by the river" and "Cowgirl in the sand" .The whole album is brilliant and Neil is so passionate ,almost manic. The band are so tight and, bless him,it's a pity Danny Whitten didn't stay with us longer. The Horse seem seem to have so much more energy with Danny around.

They don't make music like this anymore.

Treat yourself.This is rock'n'roll at it's best.

Roll on the next archive release.

Rock'n' roll can never die !!!!!!!

Canyon have given Jay farrar the kick up the backside he was needing.I enjoyed "Terroir Blues" very much, but i felt Jay was taking himself too seriously, the canyon lads add that extra punch into the older solo material and to make it even more intense are the versions of Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane" and Syd Barrett's "Lucifer Sam" It's nice to see Jay back with a band as brilliant as Canyon.Just compare the Son Volt material with his solo work !(Always have a band)
Canyon have recorded three CD's and on the live album they do a great version of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer"
The DVD that comes with CD is fantastic with Jay and band in great form
CD and DVD at an excellent price!Spoil yourself!!!

Recorded in 1972 with the Stray Gators, most of this album has a nice, laid back ,country feel to it!Alongside that you have the powerful "Alabama","See the old folks, tied in white robes "some people said it was only a reworking of "Southern Man",but i disagree. Also here is the anti Heroin song "Needle and the damage done" written after the death of Danny Whitten!
"Words " has dream-like lyrics and Neil plays a meandering guitar solo(There is a superior version on "Road Rock 1)
Neil had severe back problems at the time, hence the lack of Electric guitar!
I like to two songs with the London Symphony orchestra,"A man needs a maid" and There's a world",you could put the latter song down as,childlike !!!
Amongst all this you have the really strong acoustic songs,"Out on the Weekend","Old Man" and the classic "Heart of gold".
The Gators? Tim Drummond (Bass)-Ben Keith (Steel guitar)-Jack Nitzsche(Piano and slide) and Kenny Buttrey (Drums)
Guest vocalists-James Taylor,Linda Ronstadt,Crosby,Stills and Nash

Over the years Giant Sand albums have all been excellent, but if i had to choose my favourite i would say "Chore of Enchantment! It has everything, the beautiful ballads, the funky "wolfy" and the grunge/crazy Horse on "Satellite" What makes them so unique is there variation of musical styles and the magical songwriting of Howe.
On this album all the tracks seem to blend nicely into one another.
Two tracks,"Shiver" and "Tempation of egg" appear on the "Selections Circa 1990-2000" Best of album !

Neil in fine form !The first five tracks are all acoustic with no duff ones among them. "My my,hey hey(out of the blue","Thrasher" and "Pocahontas" would make it if another "Best of big Neil" appears."Thrasher" has the most amazing lyrics,it's a short story set to music,Neil ain't stopping at the fancy hotel with heated pool and bar,he's "Got his own row left to hoe "Good old Neil ,always the mystery man.
He keeps to his favourite subject .the plight of the Native Americans on "Pocahontas""With my Indian rug and a pipe to share ""Ride my Llama" is a good laugh and "Sail away" has lovely lyrics ! "Powderfinger" another epic with Neil playing fine guitar! Then the fun begins ,remember this is in the punk era and Neil dumbs down the lyrics and The Horse are having fun on "Welfare Mothers" and Sedan delivery"This was the year of "look ,we can't really play, but we're having a ball" that's the point,Neil is getting across and I think he lost some of his Hippie following with this album.Neil ain't no hippie anyway !! "Hey hey,my my (into the black)" ends the album and this is the beginning of the grunge,Man !Great angry lyrics "We gotta kinder, gentler machine gun hand"
A must buy CD

I would rate this alongside his first album and the great "Miller's tale"Right from kick off it's the classic Verlaine guitar on "Cry mercy,Judge". His songwriting is as good as ever, with great lyrics on "Town called Walker",he writes about the small town mentality "Janey's goin' back to Walker, says folks there are happy bees,I said i remember Walker, you lookin'for some misery ?"most of the album is upbeat, but the darkest song here,is "Bomb""I don't know how to talk,no,I don't know how to think,I just lay there,Bomb Bomb Bomb"this could be anywhere in the world !!!
Verlaine's lyrics are poetry in motion, listen to the spoken word on "The scientist writes a letter",beautiful lyrics with a really fine guitar solo to end with.
Tom's work can be patchy, but when on form few can touch him !
His band on this album are Fred Smith,Jimmy Ripp and A. Schwartzberg. Last guitar hero ? Indeedy !
Buy now !

This is Neil at his best and with a fine backing band this album is superb! The opener "Cowgirl in the sand" is as stunning as usual and Ben Keith plays some fine rhythm guitar alongsides Neil's intense vocals and lead guitar. The version of "Words" is amazing and yet again Neil is in fine voice and the guitar work is more direct than on "Harvest".Another amazing version is "Tonight's the night"which sticks pretty closely to the album version with Neil on Piano and Ben Keith playing the most amazing slide guitar. This is just as spooky as the original !
A blistering version of Dylan's "all along the Watchtower" ends this fantastic album with Chrissie Hynde the guest artist
Neil comes up with a few surprises, the beautiful "Peace of mind","Fool for your love" and "Motorcycle Mama" from comes a time!
Just look at his classic band-Jimmy Keltner,Ben Keith,Spooner Oldham and Donald Duck Dunn !Astrid and Pegi are fine back up singers,so buy this one,it's a killer !
Road Rock volume 2 will be released shortly in 2010 !!!!!

After the Classic "Marquee Moon" I don't think Television could have made a better album than that one,but they give it a damn good shot on "Adventure" In it's own right this is a really fine album, for a start there's more humour than "MM" "Glory " and "Days" could have been good singles and "Foxhole" is still as relevant today as it was late 70's,with some brilliant guitar and angry lyrics from Verlaine,I still feel that could have been on the first album !"Careful " has some playful lyrics and "Carried away" is pretty dreamy". My favourite track on the album is "The Fire",with another stunning guitar solo and first class lyrics from Verlaine. "Ain't that nothin'" sounds like the Stones (Listen to "Satisfaction" on the live album !),yet another good guitar break as the song builds and fades !
"The Dream's dream"is more laid back, with some nice guitar and some organ to make the track more atmospheric. Then you have the two bonus tracks to round things off !
Give it a listen ! Fantastic
