5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful debut......, 19 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Fatou (Audio CD)
This debut album is truly delightful. Combining lovely melodies with strong, simple rhythms, delicate guitar-playing and striking vocals, Fatoumata Diawara marks herself out as a rising star of modern Malian singer-songwriters. There are serious messages to a number of her songs (the lyrics are translated in the extensive liner notes), including Bissa (arranged marriage) and Boloko (female circumcision), but there is just as much of the bright & playful side of Fatou on Bakonoba and her ode to love - Kanou. The album has been beautifully produced, as you would expect from World Circuit, and that allows Fatou & her songs to simply shine.

Cuisinart EM200U Espresso Coffee Maker Chrome
Cuisinart EM200U Espresso Coffee Maker Chrome

3.0 out of 5 stars Initially impressed, but a bit unreliable, 5 Jan. 2011
I purchased one of these at Christmas 2010. Machine worked great out of the box - was producing really nice coffee, with good crema, and the machine is so easy to use. My husband loved the simplicity of it. However, within about 6 weeks (around mid Feb 2011) it just stopped working. The service from Amazon was great - they sent a new one immediately, before we had even returned the old one. New machine worked great out of the box, but within a few weeks the plastic sliding section that holds the filter basket in place when you empty it just split off. I called Cuisinart and they sent us a new filter arm/set of baskets straight away at no charge. Again, good service when we had a problem. But now the milk frother on our second machine has also stopped working (we clean it after every use and followed all instructions), so I have to decide whether to send this one back for our 3rd replacement machine - as it is still under guarantee, or to get a refund from Amazon and try a different machine!

The other minor thing is that we do seem to get alot of leakage from the machine, even if the drip tray isn't full, but this is a minor issue for me given the price and how well machine performs its job when it is fully functioning!

This could be a great little machine at a good price, but to be on our upcoming 3rd machine in 12 months suggests to me that Cuisinart need to work on the reliability factor!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Collaboration & the original idea for Buena Vista Social Club!, 11 Oct. 2010
This review is from: AfroCubism (Audio CD)
There's a great story behind 'AfroCubism'. When Nick Gold & Ry Cooder went to Cuba back in 1996, they were intending to record Malian mucians with Cuban musicians. But the Malians never showed up (visa issues apparently) so there they were with 3 weeks booked in the studio and no collaboration. They worked on other ideas and ended up recording Buena Vista Social Club - the rest, as they say, is history. Or world music history at least :)

The original idea for the project - AfroCubism - has finally seen the light of day, so is it worth the wait? Well, the band is certainly more of a supergroup than it would have been back in 1996 - Cuban Eliades Ochoa & Malians Bassekou Kouyate & the kora genius Toumani Diabate in particular having high profiles in their own right these days, and the album more than reflects the considerable talent of all those involved. The discipline of the Cuban rhythm section makes sense of collaborations involving the looser more improvisational Malian style. There is even a fresh & enjoyable improvisation re-working of 'Guantanamera'!

This record blends traditions, pushes boundaries & gives you something thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. If you loved Buena Vista Social Club then you will love this too. Joy & exuberance abound!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Megafaun, 8 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Heretofore (Audio CD)
Megafaun are a band on the up, following there breakthrough LP Gather, Form & Fly - they can confound & entrance and this 'mini-album' (consisting of songs written during their first two European tours) is no exception. The songs draw you in - there are beautiful harmonies, a bold trio of voices, a myriad of influences & both patient construction & deconstruction. I would highly recommend Heretofore & also seeing this band live - their live show truly makes you appreciate their skill, warmth & energy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Afrobeat heaven!, 8 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Secret Agent (Audio CD)
I went to the Tony Allen 70/Nigeria 50 show (which was wonderful!) at the Barbican on Wednesday night & picked up this album after the show. I have to say that I disagree with one of the previous reviewers (AndrewSouthLondon) on the production values of this album. Tony Allen is a percussion genius, and this always shines through - 'Secret Agent' is a balanced album - it shows off Allen's skill, whilst also bringing other aspects of the music to the fore. Almost every review of an album released by the World Circuit label mentions the superior sound, high production values and sympathetic treatment of the material in question.......I don't feel that 'Secret Agent' is any different. It's a wonderful Afrobeat record. Buy it & enjoy the rhythms!

5.0 out of 5 stars Americana doesn't quite cover it.....great 2nd album from Megafaun, 17 Aug. 2009
This review is from: Gather, Form And Fly (Audio CD)
An awesome album of heartfelt & intriguing songs from the band that rose from the ashes of DeYarmond Edison (which included Bon Iver's Justin Vernon). There's great harmonies, deconstructed blues & folk, banjo & innovative percussion - together they make a warm and inviting that it would be hard to regret purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential new album....., 23 Feb. 2009
This review is from: SEYA (Audio CD)
This album may well turn out to be the African album of the year - Oumou's voice is incredibly strong & soulful and the record is perfectly constructed - let it build and you will be entranced by the end. The sleeve notes and translations will tell you exactly what she is singing about, but in many ways the music speaks for itself....whether you are a new listener to Malian music or someone who is familiar with Oumou's previous albums, there is no way you will regret buying this record!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic live recording....., 14 Oct. 2008
This really is a fantastic double live album - beautiful package, and the extensive liner notes are an interesting read - a really nice supplement to the music. Even if you are familiar with the Buena Vista story, the extra info really brings home how historic the appearance of all these Cuban musicians at Carnegie Hall really was.

The recording is exuberant and really captures the atmosphere, great musicianship and spirit of the event. I can't recommend this highly enough.....if you loved the original BVSC album you will find something new to appreciate in these live performances!
