5.0 out of 5 stars Watching the End of an Era, 5 Sep 2006
This documentary takes us behind the scenes of Arthur Miller's "The Misfits". There is a wealth of footage shown here shot whilst the film was in production. It is a delight if you consider the film was made over 40 years ago. Here you will discover why Clark Gable initially rejected the role of Gay Langland, the goodwill initially experienced at the beginning of the shoot gradually leading to tension arising from relationships on set, and how Miller's original screenplay, intended as a gift to his wife, ended in a broken marriage. With insightful interviews from Writer, Cast and Crew alike, "The Making of The Misfits" is a suitable companion to an intriguing film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elton & Bernie....Back on Track..., 25 Aug 2006
This review is from: Peachtree Road (Audio CD)
I wasn't sure how to approach this album. After the pleasant surprise of "Songs from the West Coast" how would Elton follow it? Would quality control be very much on board or would it be time to "get me leather jacket?!" I'm pleased to say that Elton has built on the successful formula used on .."West Coast.." "Peachtree Road" finds Elton in mellow mood and almost back where he began. This time though, a lot of ground has been covered. Some of the songs here remind me of the "Friends" soundtrack, and the marvellous work that immediately followed. This is the one he should have made a long time ago before tantrums and whatever got in the way. "Peachtree Road" redresses the balance back to Elton John..musician rather than celeb. Well done!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Slinky Solo Debut from 80s Goddess., 14 July 2006
This was Susannah Hoffs' debut solo album following the Bangles split in 1989. Susannah wasn't one to sit and mope and 2 years later she returned with "When You're A Boy". The album carries on where "Different Light" left off, which is no bad thing. This album has direction, melody and get up and go. Compare it to the Bangles "Everything" which seems almost anodyne. A shame that "WYAB" failed to sell and it would be 5 years before Susannah made another album. So, if you want to know why all the fuss made about the "cute one" in the Bangles, then here's the evidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC PURE POP!, 5 July 2006
This review is from: Pop Said... (Audio CD)
It's great news that "Pop Said", the Darling Buds debut album (for Epic) is to get a timely reissue. Released back in 1988 "Pop Said" deserved more success than initially recieved. (Hopefully Cherry Red will be able to reissue the two albums that followed - both classic and unjustly ignored.) Full of hook laden classic power pop it's time to reaquaint yourself with this album. Like I said, and Pop Said - "Let's go round there!"

5.0 out of 5 stars WEST HAM MAGIC!, 8 May 2006
This is a classic Hammers performance beating Chelsea against all the odds. Played during the season the team were relegated from the Premiership it does seem odd. A team that can play as good as this against Chelsea are later relegated. Watch for DiCanio's fabulous goals!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Film......Not remastered., 5 April 2006
This review is from: I Married a Witch [DVD] (DVD)
I was looking forward to the release of this film onto DVD. Unfortunately it hasn't been remastered and so the asking price of around a tenner is perhaps too much. This isn't to detract from the fine comedy performances - Veronica Lake only bettered her role here in "Sullivan's Travels" and "This Gun for Hire". The Wedding Scene is still as funny as ever but this classic film deserves more from posterity. Maybe they'll get it right next time??

5.0 out of 5 stars Lene's Best....So Far...., 7 Mar 2006
This review is from: Lost In A Moment (Audio CD)
Back with a swift follow up to "Another Day", Lene Marlin is not afraid to confront the trials and tribulations of love and all that goes with it. The sound here is somewhat heavier than before and she certainly isn't out to please the Top 40 crowd. Lene has always written with a certain tenderness and that is never more in evidence than here. She's been through it, dare you join her and be "Lost in A Moment"?!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of his Best., 19 Feb 2005
This review is from: Tug Of War (Audio CD)
Tug of War was Paul's first new album since the disappointing McCartney II. Much had happened in the 2 years since this, the break up of Wings, the irreparable loss of his old friend and bandmate John Lennon and a brief reunion of Paul, George and Ringo in 1981. The question was "Could he still cut it?!". Tug of War was a stunning return to form silencing all the critics. Paul was approaching his 40th birthday during the album's production and you can see that he was looking back through the years; the title track sums up the relationship of the post-split Beatles, "Ballroom Dancing" the Hamburg years and of course the touching tribute to John Lennon. It's FAB!!!!

Devil's Arithmetic [DVD] (1999)

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking., 21 Nov 2004
Kirsten Dunst plays Hannah, a young Jewish teenager, spoiled and more concerned with her friends than family. She attends the Passover Festival only because she has to. Various relatives try and tell her of the Holocaust to which she has little interest. She is then mysteriously transported in time back to Poland in 1941 and learns first hand the horrors of the Final Solution. Kirsten Dunst rises to the challenge of such a harrowing role. Brittany Murphy also gives a sensitive performance. This film pulls no punches about its subject matter and just might make you think. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT INTRO TO JANIS, 2 Jan 2004
This review is from: Super Hits (Audio CD)
SUPER HITS is a fine starting point into the music of Janis Joplin. If you've always wondered what she was all about then this album gives you just some of an impressive body of work from one of the finest singers ever. Also included is the posthumously released "One Night Stand" with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, how this was passed over until 1983 is a mystery. Go get it! You won't regret this!
