The machine I received was of poor build quality and several faults quickly developed. The front panel bent away from its fixtures and steam condensed with the display panel. However its biggest problem is wasting energy since almost half of the water it uses in its slow operation disappears as steam! I now boil a kettle and use it unplugged as a filter stand.

Words, what they mean and where they come from can be great fun. Forsyth's book is perfect for reading on journeys or for those moments when an escape from seriousness while still exercising the mind is needed.

Hemri Pirenne is one of the great scholars in the history of urbanism and the development of the city. In this short work he clearly shows his view of capitalism as a force working within societies and not the reason for them.

A Dictionary of Urdu, Classical Hindi and English
A Dictionary of Urdu, Classical Hindi and English
by John T. Platts
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dictionary of Urdu, Classical Hindi and English, 15 Jan 2013

It is usual for academics to concentrate on the most recent editions of dictionaries but Platt's dictionary of 1904 is a must for anyone interested in 19th century Urdu literature and its development throughout the 20th century. It gives a snapshot of a major world language at a particular period of time and should be considered as important a work as Lane's 'Lexicon' is to English speaking students of classical Arabic. It is a readable, comprehensible and very affordable must buy for anyone with the slightest interest in Indo-European languages for which we are indebted to Manohar its republishers.

Although this book introduces to the Urdu language and gives many useful alternative words or phrases the lack of cursive script examples is very limiting particularly for learners accustomed to reading Arabic or Farsi for whom Urdu pronunciation is made easier by the shared indicators. Value for money but it falls short of high expectatons

Damascus after the Muslim Conquest: Text and Image in Early Islam
Damascus after the Muslim Conquest: Text and Image in Early Islam
by Nancy Khalek
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £50.20

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding Banu Umayya, 18 July 2012

For students of Islamic history and the urban developments in Islamic south-west Asia Nancy Khalek's book is an important contribution to an historical understanding of the interaction and co-operation of Islam and Christianity before and during Umayyad rule in Syria. Her multi-disciplinary methodology reveals a wealth of detail that might otherwise lie hidden beneath the assumptions of more traditional and restricted representations of the period.
