5.0 out of 5 stars love that dare not speak its name, 10 Jan 2010
This review is from: Wilde [1997] [DVD] (DVD)
I have been a fan of Oscar Wilde for some time, and this film gave amazingly accurate insight into the life of a great Irish literary. Indeed, many a speech by Stephen Fry has been quoted word for word from the actual trial monologues, and the uncanny resemblance of Fry to Wilde himself is astounding.

This Wilde is torn between what is accepted love (his wife, and children), and the 'love that dare not speak its name' (primarily his destructive relationship with the needy, selfish and petulant Lord Alfred Douglas, played here by Jude Law in the role which brought him to world attention). We see his charm and conviction when creating his plays or amusing friends, we also see his weaker side and why he was the cause of his own eventual arrest and imprisonment, we see how prison changed him and - as he wrote himself in De Profundis - broke his spirit and his health.

5.0 out of 5 stars directors commentary, 26 Nov 2009
Having seen this film many times, I bought this dvd just for the 'extras' If you are a budding stop-motion animator, this is the one for you. DO look at the extras, especially the directors commentary, There is a wealth of knowledge to be learnt as Suzie Templeton and the chief animator guides you step by step through the making of the film. Be carful as to which version you by, they don't all have 'extras'

1.0 out of 5 stars Audio CD Bitterly Disappointed, 13 Nov 2009
This review is from: Coming Home (Audio CD)
Coming Home is by far my favourite and well thumbed novel. The descriptive mise-en-scene is full of rich texture entwining the lives of the central characters. HOWEVER if you buy this novel in an AUDIO CD format, I am afraid you will be very disappointed. It is very abridged to the point that it looses its charm and is reduced to the bare essentials. Music is played over the audio in places, which is irksome to say the least, and to cap it all Vanessa Redgrave's reading of it is, I regret to say, awful.
