5.0 out of 5 stars good dailogue. The only thing still to be desired ..., 6 July 2014

This review is from: The Nonesuch (Kindle Edition)
Georgette Heye is the queen of the historical romance Believable characters, convincing period detail, amusing episodes, good dailogue. The only thing still to be desired is that they don't come to an end!

Georgette Heyer never disappoints and is superb as always. I'm going to stop giving reviews if you keep demanding more words. Brief and to the point saves reader's valuable time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Prefer it in Paperback, 4 Feb 2014

This is a perfectly competent of uninspiring book but I think craft books are more convenient and have better and more easily followed illustrations in paperback form.

2.0 out of 5 stars Kindle not suitable for craft books, 4 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a perfectly competent if dull little book. Perhaps it might interest someone who had never done any hand sewing. But I think for this type of material you're better off with a 'real' book as the illustrations are so much better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Jane Austen does it better, 4 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When you consider Jane Austen's lightness of touch, wit, intelligence, understanding of the underlying reality of her times etc it is really surprising that so many probably perfectly competent writers rush on in where angels with any sense would fear to tread. One could only recommend this to someone who had never read any Jane Austen and then why would they be bothering?

This entertaining and moving tale cannot fail to stir the heart of any Scot. It includes an interesting opening article by Alex Salmond.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enigmatic and subtle, or author can't deliver as promised?, 30 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I began by enjoying this book immensely. The author's power of description and use of metaphor are excellent. But as the book progressed I began to find it increasingly unsatisfactory; I also began to be unsure of the veracity of the characters and I disliked the main female protagonist. I was uncertain what had actually happened by the end of the book and discussing it within my book group, none of us were certain and we all had different ideas. It is possible (Evening Mists?) that this was the author's intention (though personally I think it was a mere failure of execution) but if so then he is too clever for his audience and patronising. I decided not to read any of his other works.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 30 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: And Sew to Bed (Hardcover)
Having raved about the modern edition of And Sew to Bed, I eagerly awaited this expecting a selection of vintage-inspired night-attire. However this book was very disappointing, with patterns of unflattering, uninspiring, old-fashioned garments that I can't imagine anyone wearing today. One can imagine making a lovely pair of silk French knickers but they have to be 'inspired by' the vintage garment but translated into a modern version. You'd just look an eccentric frump in these. As for accessories = who uses powder puffs these days. Nothing inspired me in this book,

1.0 out of 5 stars The manners of the Americans, 30 Jun 2013

Fanny Trollope said it all before. This book of etiquette is about the American customs and manners and while of course there is nothing wrong with these (for Americans), the opinions expressed are of little interest to Europeans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty and practical, 20 May 2013

I love this book. There are beautiful photographs of a range of lovely night attire for women and children (nothing for men), plus accessories, slippers. bags etc. There are full size patterns to trace. I have already made the girl's kimono and with matching trim the boy's pyjamas but adapted for girls. I plan on making more items. The instructions are reasonably easy to follow,
