Decent sound, reasonably robust construction, good price. The remote works well (with Apple gear), and looks like it won't break easily. A good buy, I think.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice edition, but ...., 5 Jun 2014

Nice enough edition, but really could do with a bit more editorial matter - a proper introduction would have been a boon. As a selection of Jackson's work, this is pretty good - a couple of novels and lost of short fiction. And, as ever with LoA volumes, it's a lovely piece of book production, nice paper, great binding.

Love this phone. I came to it from a relatively geriatric iPhone, and really liked the performance. It's a big beast, and you know it's in your pocket, but I like that. Great screen. A lot will depend on how you feel about Windows on your phone, but, so far, I like it a lot.In truth I'd probably rather have an iPhone 5s, but I got this for 150, rather than 550.

We really like this. It looks very cool and toasts to perfection anything you can throw at it. A warning, though - it's a big piece of equipment - so check out the dimensions before you buy.

The Haunting of Hill House (Penguin Modern Classics)
The Haunting of Hill House (Penguin Modern Classics)

What a strange book this is. There are elements of the traditional haunted-house story - mysterious noises, unsettling happenings, mystery - but nothing is ever explained - indeed no explanations are even hinted at.The writing is elusive, glancing and tangential - meanings slither away as we try to grasp them. It's really, I think, the story of a disintegrating personality - Eleanor's - with elements of social comedy thrown in. Ultimately it is unsatisfying - never quite scary enough, never quite profound enough. At times a little dull. It reminds me of one of the Muriel Spark stories that don't quite come off - The Hothouse by the East River, for example. But still, it got under my skin, and I've spent a lot of time thinking about it, and those shifting, shadowy meanings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny. Very Funny., 15 April 2014

Nadin's Rachel Riley books are incredibly funny. But there's also a backbone of truth running through them. A touch ruder than you might think - maybe for 11 and up, rather than 9 ... Anyway, just as funny - perhaps more so - than Louise Rennison (who is also excellent).

Philip Larkin: A Writer's Life
Philip Larkin: A Writer's Life

I can't imagine there being a need for another Larkin biography - this is nicely written, hugely informative, critically adept, and full of juicy details. Larkin is revealed as in many ways a difficult and unpleasant man, but not without redeeming qualities. Will you appreciate the wonderful poetry more for having read this biography? I think so. A little.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, ish, 15 April 2014

This review is from: Letters of Ted Hughes (Hardcover)
I love Hughes's verse, and much of his prose, and these letters are often interesting both in what they say about the poetry and what they say about the life. However to really enjoy a collection of letters, i think you need humour. Hughes was not a witty man, and so these can be rather hard going. The letters of Larkin and Amis are a much more enjoyable read, although both are lesser writers than Hughes.

Excellent value. Hard to find fault, really. Except, perhaps, with myself, for being the kind of person who wears grey tank tops.
