5.0 out of 5 stars Great characters, 11 Jan. 2015

I loved the characters in this story, particularly the innocence of the children. The relationships between parents and children, siblings and non familial relationships are well drawn and interesting. Addiction is handle sensitively and the story is beautifully written and intelligent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Searingly powerful, 22 Oct. 2014

This review is from: FAG (Kindle Edition)
This powerful story is set in a 1930's boarding school for boys. The brutality reminded me of 'Lord of the Flies', however this story is a different one. The hierarchy of prefects and younger boys is rigid and used as an excuse for cruel and humiliating behaviour. Such behaviour is both tolerated and ignored, with devastating consequences.
The title has two meanings, one a describing the 'lower classes' of the public school system and the menial tasks expected of them; the other if far more sinister as a derogatory term. Both uses of the word are used in the story and I feel they are appropriate for the time and for the intended impact.
This book is nothing like Hill's previous works, the 'Maureen' stories, which are written with a much lighter touch, as is appropriate for them.
I was concerned, early on, that the book was going to be over-written and did think once that the author should 'step away from the thesaurus', but the style soon settled down into a beautifully descriptive yet searingly powerful brutality.
Whilst the story has the power to shock, the ending is uplifting, clever and I found it satisfying.
There is an after-note by the author, which is refreshingly honest and added a powerful dimension to the story.

Fabulous thriller which I loved and highly recommend!
This intriguing story grabbed me from the start and I found it hard to put down. Olivia and her children have disappeared in strange circumstances and her husband seems to be hiding something.
The story is clever and the characters leap from the page, nothing is quite as it seems. Brilliant!

I have read and enjoyed most of this author's work but particularly liked this one for the unexpected twists and great characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense in Morecambe!, 14 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really enjoyed this well written thriller. Set in Morecombe, it examines the fictional underbelly of this seaside town in all it's faded grandeur. (I hope it's fictional!)
Mitch has a gift, although he sees it more of a curse: he sees things which happen in the future. He foresaw the death of a girl whilst he was at school and then endured years of scrutiny and misunderstanding. He now returns to Morecombe a successful businessman. He has invested into an hotel, planning to restore it to it's former glory. He then encounters local politicians, who are involved in far more than local planning issues.
There are more murders and the novel hurtles towards its suspenseful and terrifying conclusion.
Highly recommended!

Oh I love Maureen! Her adventures take her to Blackpool in this story, with hilarious yet poignant results. The story reveals a little of Maureen's past, helping her come to terms with underlying troubles.
She's a great character who ends up in various bizarre situations which make me smile because it is so warmly funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars follow your dream!, 4 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'd describe this book as intelligent chick-lit. It's about dreams..... the type you follow and also what happens when you are asleep.
I was fascinated by the condition which one of the characters lives with: narcolepsy. This condition can be very debilitating as the person living with it can potentially fall asleep at any time, making life very challenging in many areas such as work and driving for example. This character, Dominic, has strategies for dealing with the condition, which I found really interesting and he also has big plans.
Liza has dreams of her own despite rebuilding her life following the catastrophic end of a relationship. A relationship which she ended herself, but in a way she had not initially intended.
Dominic and Liza's dreams may be compatible, or may be conflicting.
Some moments made me laugh out loud, I really enjoyed this book!
