5.0 out of 5 stars very detailed book, 25 Dec. 2003
I love books on the northern ireland conflict which give details of names, operations etc, rather than spend too much time theorizing. This is why I thoroughly recommend this book. Ian Phoenix joined the northern ireland police, then the royal ulster constabulary (RUC) in 1970. The book details his life and career(obviously from only one point of view,as the book is based on his diary entries). There's a great wealth of paramilitary names, together with details of operations(ones where the security forces got things wrong as well as the successful ones. ) As a bonus, the book contains both the identities of the 7 man ARMY COUNCIL of the provisional irish republican army(PIRA), sometimes just referred to as the IRA,paramilitary anti british organization.and the organizational structure of the ira's general headquarters (GHQ). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and insightful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars THRILLING PLOT, 25 Dec. 2003
This review is from: The Dogs of War (Paperback)
No one reads a Freddie Forsyth novel for interesting characters, its all about exciting, well researched plots. Having said that ,the mercenary lead character is more interesting than most of his others. This book is almost like a HOW TO CARRY OUT A COUP D'ETAT manual. The hero is hired to overthrow a west african dictatorship in order to gain control of its mineral wealth. The book details the procedures for setting up a private limited company with which to then buy a ship anonymously,to transport the mercenaries to their destination. Buying weapons and equipment and transporting them internationally. There's a good twist at the end. RECOMMENDED. educational as well as exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars for busty liz fraser fans, 24 Dec. 2003
Barry Evans was never as funny as Robin Askwith(in the confessions series) . These 1970s softcore sex comedies aren't really my thing but this is brilliant for all fans of busty,ex carry on actress LIZ FRASER. There's a solid 20 minutes of Liz ,dressed quite scantily. Never going to win an oscar, but a must see for Liz fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for liz fraser fans, 22 Dec. 2003
many of these softcore sex comedies in the 1970s were made, most were awful. Not funny, just an excuse for naked women. Robin Askwith was the funniest male lead in these films ,mainly because he WASN'T handsome, making his affairs with women more funny. I love this video primarily because of busty ,ex Carry On actress LIZ FRASER. She was in her early 40s in 1976 when this film was made and looks terrific. Its worth it just for the sexy Liz in the bathroom scene, and the Liz in a basque scene. RECOMMENDED for Liz fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book for beginners, 22 Dec. 2003
I couldn't quite give this book full marks, but i definitely recommend it. First the good points, The basic underlying principles of magic, Individual and detailed chapters on the following divination methods TAROT,I CHING,GEOMANTIC DIVINATION(excellent practical instructions), Making your magical weapons, Chapters on making, using talismans and Astral Projection(3 separate methods are given),others on invocation and evocation(not perfect but ok) and one on self initiation for the lone worker. My main criticism of the book is the lack of a chapter on the QABALLAH. As this is at the heart of the western magical tradition ,the omission is strange. It would have been more complete with chapters on a brief history of western magic, and introductions to alchemy, astrology as well. However the book is worth it for the tarot,i ching, talismans, geomantic divination, astral projection, and meaning of magic chapters. RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible value, 22 Dec. 2003
Don't let the small size of this book and the number of pages mislead you. This is unbelievable value and a fabulous book. It cuts out the extraneous and unnecessary, and explicity explains what evocation is all about. The author explains in clear and simple terms EXACTLY what evocation is(NOT simply mumbo jumbo but how to get into the right state of mind as well). Also explained is the difference between invocation and evocation and simple instructions for making a magic mirror. Finally the main parts of the book EVOCATION. Step by step details from the lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram ,conjuring the spirit, controlling it ,through to the license to depart. Much more including popular misconceptions about evocation and potential pitfalls also. So many authors think writing enormously thick books full of irrelevant information and hard to understand terms and language,is the way to impress readers. Kraig instead is a great communicator and this book is easily understood by the average reader. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars military aspects of the conflict, 11 Dec. 2003
This review is from: The Irish War (Paperback)
I liked this book because the military and technological aspects of the conflicts between the british forces and the IRA are concentrated on ,not just the politics. The book has 4 parts. The first is a general overview of the political situation 1962 - 1998. The fourth part has chapters on irish history (and british involvement) from the 17th century to 1921(independence of southern ireland). Its the second and third parts i liked most. The second part has chapters on the british response to the IRA. Surveillance, human and technical, agent running, the SAS, links with loyalists etc. The third part is about the IRA. Chapters have information on IRA technology. Particularly interesting is the development of the IRA mortar. From the MARK 15 (latest one,THE BARRACKBUSTER, first used in 1993,right back to the MARK 2 first used in 1972. Contains diagrams of the use of the mortars also. RECOMMENDED)

5.0 out of 5 stars exciting AND educational novel, 10 Dec. 2003
This review is from: Crash of '79 (Paperback)
Before reading this book i had no knowledge of,or interest in international high finance. This thriller changed all that. The scenario is the middle east, particularly iran and saudi arabia. The hero, Bill Hitchcock, is a financial advisor who goes to work for the saudis, advising them how to invest all the billions of dollars they're getting from oil sales, more efficiently. Meanwhile the all powerful, western backed Shah of Iran(at the height of his powers, before being overthrown by Ayatollah Khomeini) has a plan to be the undisputed master of the middle east, recreating the Sassanid Empire of Persia(226 -651 AD),before it was taken over by the moslems. But the new Iran/Persia will have a modern economy, modern armed forces, complete control of the middle east and its oil supplies. As well as nuclear energy and weapons. The action moves from the middle east to high finance houses of europe and the united states. military strategy, finance, politics, nuclear weapons, its all here. BRILLIANT,EDUCATIONAL,THRILLING

5.0 out of 5 stars interesting angle on northern ireland, 6 Dec. 2003
This is an excellent book on the paramilitary organisation, the ulster defence association(UDA). The author was a probation officer and got to know and be trusted by paramilitary prisoners. The first 2 chapters detail a brief history of the northern ireland situation and the authors history and how he came to meet the prisoners.Followed by a general chapter on structure and issues like collusion. Next 4 chapters are the main part of the book. They detail 4 time periods of the UDA. 1. 1970s when the UDA was formed. 2. 1980s infiltration and reorganisation. 3. mid 80s travelling gunmen and selective strategy. 4. 1990s retaliatory sectarian murder. What makes these chapters different from any other book on the subject is instead of a brief quote by the paramilitary followed by heavy editorializing by the author,in this book, the individual paramilitaries are given 4 or 5 pages ,uninterrupted to make their point. They talk about how they became involved in the UDA and actual terrorist operations they went on. Many of the UDA men use pseudonyms while some give their real names. The final chapter has distubing interviews with 4 UDA men who took part in the horrendous 1993 Greysteel massacre. What sets this book apart from many others in the same genre is the lack of sensationalism. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars very detailed biography, 8 Nov. 2003
born 1963,this book looks briefly at his early life. in the 80s he joined the largest protestant paramilitary organisation, the ulster defence association(UDA). the UDA 2nd battalion controlled west belfast. divided into A,B and C companies. C company itself was divided into 18 units,C1 up to C18,each consisting of 30 to 60 men. i liked the fact the book described the structure for the first time i've seen. by the late 80s the authorities acted against the UDA and imprisoned much of the leadership . ironically younger UDA men like adair welcomed this as they were seen as too cautious and some were special branch informants. now the the "young turks" had taken over and could increase attacks. between 1990 and 1994,adairs unit killed 40 people. the irish republican army (IRA) hated adair and tried to kill him many times.this led to the botched shankhill bomb attack, which killed 9 innocent protestants.adair had an ongoing feud with the north belfast IRA leader (who is named and his photograph is in the book,as is the overall belfast brigade IRA leader). however in 1994 he was secretly recorded boasting of his activities and jailed. released in 1999,he got into a murderous feud with rival protestant organisation the ulster volunteer force(UVF). jailed again, released may 2002. he made the mistake of trying to take over the whole of the UDA,which has a loose federal structure. more killings, adair jailed again. but after adairs men killed another UDA leader, the whole UDA chased his family and supporters out of ulster to england and scotland.it details the leading personalities in adairs unit and includes their photographs. a good very detailed book.recommended
