Well the cavalry arrives just in the nick of time as is the norm in this series, excellent series and focusing on an auxiliary cavalry ala rather than legionaries a brilliant series and very good read, we'll recommended

3.0 out of 5 stars Warrior queen or ham acting at its best, 21 Feb. 2013

I suppose I was trying to remember this as watched when in first showed on tv. Knowing more and research on finds in the historical context have rendered this series beyond obsolete both in terms of accuracy and acting. I would suppose it was pretty big budget when made but boy is it boring and depressing watching now. If you we're thinking of watching it again then don't do it, I fast forwarded it so many times trying to find good bits that I must have viewed the whole series in the time taking in watching two at normal speed. In all do not try and watch it to remember how good it was.......it isn't
Personal view so make your mind up yourself if you dare lol

5.0 out of 5 stars good news, 18 Sept. 2010
A very understudied part of the roman military structure, and with this book. hopefully more will come to light on roman naval forces. Personally was confused as to what kit marines would have worn, but discussion with fellow re-enactors seems that it may well have been that worn by shore based military units, possibly with the use of more copper alloy kit over iron due to the salty sea air rusting properties.

5.0 out of 5 stars film makers should read, 18 Sept. 2010
excellent information when used in conjuction with other books in this serious on roman fortifications, the set designers of 'Centurion' should have read this before building their fort.

4.0 out of 5 stars a new hero, 18 Sept. 2010
Well having read the novel(took two days as i couldnt put it down)i was left wanting more, ignore the slight inaccuracies and to be honest no ones actually does know the final moments of the colony at Colchester, what has been suggested in the novel, may well have happened, the use of retired legionaries as a local'militia' would know doubt happened, that was a major function of settling legionaries en masse on retirement and as a basis for a civilian settlement. on the whole a good read, looking forward to the next instalment

If you are looking for an escape and evasion story watch this film, behind enemy lines roman style! Whilst you can watch the film for the enjoyment, If like me you are a roman period re-enactor then you will find the kit used an improvement on Gladiator but again bearing little resemblance to real time/real period kit used, a cross between fantasy and correct weapons, fur clad barbarian 'models' and imaginative buildings. The fort, whilst impressive in its design could have been researched a little better, there are plenty of plans and visual references for roman wooden forts and whilst you can admire the scenery builders efforts, i was left wanting just that bit more.
On the whole if you ignore the historical innacuracies (of which there are many) then this was a totally blood, guts and gore adventure romp, and we all know that Legio IX Hispana didnt expire in the mists of Caledonia
