The Lives of Others [DVD] [2006]
The Lives of Others [DVD] [2006]
Dvd ~ Martina Gedeck
Price: £6.00

5.0 out of 5 stars possibly my favourite film, 14 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
very moving.
Alos very shocking. While this film is not actually based on a true story, from my reading round the internet, it IS true that the scale and breadth of surveillance in the former East Germany was enormous.
Some very beleivable characters.
Poignant ending.
Very entertaining. Hilarious joke in the canteen about Honecker and the Sun - almost worth watching for the joke alone, although the film is a great one in its entirety.

The Medical Detective: John Snow, Cholera and the Mystery of the Broad Street Pump
The Medical Detective: John Snow, Cholera and the Mystery of the Broad Street Pump
by Sandra Hempel
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book - gripping narrative and engaging entertaining writing style, 14 Jun 2014

I oved this book !
John Snow was obviously a humble but a brilliant man. To see humanity flailing around in the dark, entirely ignorant of HOW choera was exerting its grip on swathes of the population of the world and laying them to waste was moving.
Ms Helpel has a fairly racy style; always entertaining and engaging. Interesting that Florence Nightingale was a miasmatist. Ms Hempel also discusses Ignaz Semmelweiss's effective exercise in reducing the rate of puerperal sepisi in Vienna at around the same time.
It was very interesting to hear the tales of the anaesthetic soirees of the early gentlemen scientists.
A wonderful book. I thoroughly enjoed it and spent a couple of nights reading into the small hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Big Blue Whale by Nicola Davies, 21 Dec 2012

Both my 11 year old and my 6 year old were fascinated by this book. The book describes the size, feeding habits, migration habits and a bit about the young of this majestic mammal in accessible entertaining style. As always with her books the parents become better informed eg I did not know that there are TWO global populations of blue whales who never meet because when one lot are at the equator, the other lot are at the opposite pole to where the first lot have come from....prompted lots of talk about seasons change, the earth tilting etc
The illustrations manage to convey the enormous SIZE of this gentle beast. This author is always entertaining and informative. I cannot praise this author and her work highly enough. This book inspired my kids and gripped them.
.
My kids were gripped by this book as by all her books. The language is easy enough for a six your old to read by themselves , perhaps with a bit of supervison or prompting. Really lovely book.

I thought this book was just splendid. I loved the illustrations. Nicola Davis manages to be educational and entertaining at the same time. The illustrations were colourful and fabulous. Plenty of information for parents here too. My 6 year old child was just old enough to read it too and was riveted. It certainly puts things in perspective where the actual balance of power lies between the two species. I can highly recommend this book and ALL the nature books she writes. I am a great fan of this author and she has inspired my daughter to be more interested in and protective of nature.
