5.0 out of 5 stars excellent guide, 10 May 2010
This book is like getting the teaching notes of an expert. Clearly presented in two columns to a page. The diagrams are excellent. The photographs are not good, but mostly I find them unnecessary. This is not a beginners book except for the determined. It is a book to lift a good crafts person to an excellent one. The knowledge between the 2 covers comes from a life time of actually doing it. The initial guidance on measuring the client and adapting a purchased pattern are superb and very insightful into human vanity. Read carefully the guidance on the structural fabrics to purchase before setting out on the cutting of the top fabric. Everything is reasoned and explained. This is not a coffee table book or one to dip into at bedtime. It deserves serious study and then use it to refer to frequently as you work through making a jacket, trousers or waistcoat. The results will be better than achieved before studying the book. Much the best book on tailoring and I do own others. This is specifically for men and explains how to solve the fitting problems in mens anatomy. The other tailoring books all seem to be aimed at womens wear and are not as good at the technique and finish as this book. I have also not found another tailoring book tackling fit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good clock, 7 April 2010
Maybe not asthetically strong but a good, large, clear digital format. The surround is unnecessarily large.
Easy to start and no problems setting up. Hangs close to the wall without difficulty and has adequate pull out stand for table use.
This clock does not have an illuminated display.

5.0 out of 5 stars detailed and informative, 26 Feb. 2010
After a brief history of the couture house system and explanation of how they are organised this book goes into the detail of how they sew.
The book covers the basics of which type of thread to use and the basic sewing stitches and then moves on to cover each type of sewing operation. eg. pockets, sleeves. The contents covers day dresses, tailoring and evening wear. There is a lot packed into the book and it needs thorough reading. The illustrations are excellent from line drawings of techniques to photographs of the internal construction of couture garments. There are some photos of complete garments but always used to demonstate a point in the text. It is not a coffee table book for the merely interested in fashion. It is a well written guide to lift home sewers to excellent craftspersons. It is not a guide to quick methods, much of the work is hand work following techniques of craftmanship. This is possibly not a beginners book but then it does follow the methods I was originally taught as a child, by a tailor working in school.
Maybe it is attitude that is important, the results will be beautiful not instant.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, poor research, 27 May 2009
The author is following the line that cats and dogs should be fed the way pet food manufacturers go about it. This does not help those of us who wish to find a diet, specific for the requirements of the species. The receipes given will suit the faddy owner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfull warm hands, 3 Feb. 2009
A super book packed with ideas. I want to knit them all. Very varied designs and a variety of skill levels. Not a beginners how to do it book. In projects this size you can challenge yourself and succeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super book, 3 Feb. 2009
This is a real treasure trove of ideas. Almost of a synopsis of her later books. If you want variety and a range of ideas for many projects this is an excellent book. This book comes off the self often and not just for knitting projects.

A beautifully presented book. The original text, in a good sized font, is accompanied and enriched by illustrations and excerpts from original journals.

4.0 out of 5 stars vintage patterns, 3 Feb. 2009
Vintage knitting patterns, well laid out. Many of the patterns are in 4 ply or finer weight yarns. They are not adapted for the modern knitter. 25 women's patterns, 7 children's patterns and13 men's patterns and of the men's patterns 5 are cardigans. The tease in the book is that many more patterns are illustrated than are actually given in the book. Example: of the patterns on the cover only 2 are given in the book. Some lovely designs and I shall certainly use the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointment, 3 Feb. 2009
May be very helpful if you want wedding flowers. Most of the book is based around the author's daughter's wedding with much of the rest padded out with a "seasons" project essentially the same in various colour ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars delight, 3 Feb. 2009
This is not a beginners how to do it book. I am not keen on all of this author's work. However this book is inspiring and a great help with ideas and possible surface treatments and techniques with water colour.
Lots of examples and a pleasure to browse.
