3.0 out of 5 stars Slight and very cut, 14 Aug 2009
This review is from: Malena [DVD] (DVD)
I liked this film, but it is slight. It is not as good as Summer of '42, which covers a rite of passage in similar circumstances. Bellucci is very alluring, but does not get enough to do and could have done with more lines. She does not speak until two-thirds through the film. There are some very funny bits - especially where our hero gets caught having fallen asleep with Malena's knickers on his face. I would also argue that Bellucci's casting is wrong. Malena is in her late twenties and Bellucci was in her mid-thirties at the time and it shows. She looks much more lived in; in Summer... Jennifer O'Neill was in her early twenties and had a peaches and cream innocence that was integral to the film's success. Finally, the 88 minute UK version is cut as the censor wants to save us from all that filth again. This is funny don't you think? The bits cut relate to our hero's fantasies about Malena, which are a key part of what the film is about. A rites of passage film with some of the rites - fantasising about an unattainable woman - cut out. Brilliant! LIke ER with no blood in the operations. The American version is cut too; the real film is 109 minutes long.

4.0 out of 5 stars See this instead of Watchmen, 22 Mar 2009

I liked this film so much I bought the book too. It is a good portrayal of the BMG and the mayhem it caused. Watching it you have to keep reminding yourself that this is a modern European country and not a banana republic. It is unlikely that you will emerge from the film seeing the BMG as the bad guys - that does not mean you will seem them as heroes. It is amazing how many of the them were women and they were more fanatical than the men. And babes. Baader comes across as a buffoon. Meinhof has a peripheral quality. Gudrun Ensslin was the BMG's idealogical heart and Johanna Wokalek's intense performance dominates every scene she is in. Wokalek is a little prettier than Ensslin was, but Ensslin was hot. When you watch Wokalek you find yourself enchanted by this babe next door with the Europornstar looks that is actually a ruthless urban guerilla! The action being in Germany adds another angle to the film. In the 1970s the German state is hunting terrorists; in the 1940s the German state is the terrorist. Some of the state figures and cop action that you see and you think 'if you add a swastika...' Get my point? The film does not mention the war much, nor that one of the BMG's victims was ex-SS. The BMG sttacked their enemies; how many terrorists do that? Really do that. Baader Meinhoff rocked!

The Sunken Kingdom: Atlantis Mystery Solved
The Sunken Kingdom: Atlantis Mystery Solved
by Peter James
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only read one Atlantis book..., 3 Aug 2007
Too much Atlantis writing is junk. This is not.
Rather than going off in search of the "whole opposite continent" and the "world ocean", James takes the 'radical' step of going to the source material. The keystone of his hypothesis is thus that as Plato was a philosopher, Atlantis should be considered as a philosophical entity, rather than a landmass.

The conclusion will disappoint Atlanteologists whose belief system needs a fantistical solution, rather than a solution (thus placing them in the same cage as the Roswellheads who cannot accept anything but a craft of extra-terrestrial origin (rather than a UFO)). And here lies the book's flaw - it does not give the Atlantis audience what it wants to read and would anyone who thinks Atlantis is hogwash be interested?

It is a pity that what is the most plausible concept is unlikely to receive as much attention as the utter tosh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but flawed, 8 Oct 2006

S2 is a curate's egg. There are some really good episodes but also some duds. The first weak episode is Exposed, with an entirely predictable plot. Later we get three duds in a row - FX, Indy Show and Gigolo (where Weiss is clearly uncomfortable with the script).

A key problem with the season is that the build up of the mythos means each episode has the Jarod story sharing time with Parker, Sydney and Broots pursuing the mysteries of the Centre. The latter is what we are really interested in and so Jarod the avenger of the little guy loses out. Moreover, with less time to tell the Jarod story, its plots become simpler and the denoument more obvious. Also, a little boring. The best episodes of the season are those which feature the main characters in one plot; thus, Past Sim, Red Rock and Bloodlines. Another good episode is Toy Surprise, which gives Parker the central role.

Also, worth pointing out is the lack of imagination by the writers - three episodes in a sequence of four are about police corruption, which had figured in a S1 episode anyway.

Another key flaw is that the writing is not as good as that of the X-Files, which I think the writers tried to work to. So, Raines is a cliched villain, Parker's father is a poor man's Cigarette Smoking Man and Mr Lyle is a poor man's Kryczek.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good start to the series, 8 Oct 2006

I enjoyed this season - most episodes were lively and likeable. Jarod as the avenger of the little guy has a certain charm. Towards the end of the season more mythos came into play, presumably because the creators got the nod for a second season. Andrea Parker is good throughout and unrecognisable from her performance in the much underrated Less than Perfect. Best episode is Keys where Jarod and Parker are trapped by a hurricane.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you take this album on its own merit..., 16 Aug 2006
This review is from: Musique (Audio CD)
...then it is a good record. Yes, it sounds nothing like earlt ToT but if you want catchy electropop with a rock heart then what is wrong with this?

There are some good tunes here and if you can let go of ToT's past then you can grow to like it.

I listen to it more than the early stuff because it stands up to repeated listens more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too comprehensive?, 16 Aug 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well, this book seems to have no stone unturned but is that a good thing? It could have done with separation of the entries where all you get is just a paragraph or only a discography from those where there is something to read.

The author has no writing style and there are few anecdotes. Many entries are a blur of line-up changes, with no reference to who was on which album. Sometimes you read about someone leaving, but there is no reference to when they joined!

And what is power metal? Aren't some of the bands featured thrash metal? Does prog-metal belong here?

There is a lot of good stuff here. The Judas Priest and Saxon entries are very good. The author must be a fan of Riot, as the amount of space given to this band is out of proportion to its achievments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good portrayal of the Soviet Paradise, 7 July 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: East West [DVD] (DVD)
While the Germans have taken on their past with the likes of Downfall, Das Boot and Stalingrad, the Russians have not. So, here is a French film instead. East West is very good and will strike a cord with anyone familiar with the Soviet Paradise myth.

While Deneuve is prominant on the cover, she appears late in the film and her role is really a beefy cameo. However, she does put some work into her performance and you can't say that about a lot of her recent films. Of the films she made in the Nineties that got distributed in Britain, she is as good here as in Indochine and Ma Saison Prefere and better than Place Vendome and Les Voleurs.

You cannot forget something which is little recognised as happening. The title is evocative, but 'unacknowledged' would be more accurate. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to know about the Polish war experience. That's all you need to know.

With a title like the above do you actually need a review? Another essential read from Lukas. Shame that 'real publishers' have no interest in his work and he has to publish via university presses. Not that I criticising university presses.
