Bitter Legacy: Polish-American Relations in the Wake of World War II
Bitter Legacy: Polish-American Relations in the Wake of World War II
by Richard C. Lukas
Edition: Paperback
Price: £28.50

4.0 out of 5 stars Another worthy read from Lukas, 17 May 2013
Bitter legacy indeed. Poland of course spoilt America's nice little earner by setting in motion the end of the Cold War, thus meaning it had to find new enemies... and it did. So the bitter legacy ended with biter bit. Anyway, as with the other Lukas books I have reviewed a book worth reading for what Hollywood history won't teach you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful... so they are cult masterpieces, 14 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These films are really bad; what was Catriona MacColl thinking by doing all three? You should watch with a notebook so you can note everything that does not make sense and/or is stupid. Nearly no plots; no suspense or tension; not scarey. The gore is good and so is the music but that is about it. Cemetary just drags; beyond at least passes by quickly; city has some of the dumbest scripting I have experienced. Really just for students of bad films.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 4 April 2013

I really enjoyed this; it is well written, acted and made. I do not see the point of having a colour version as a choice as anyone likely to watch this will want to do so in monochrome. Also a colour version defeats the point of having an old dark house movie send-up. If the film has a flaw it is that the jokes come too thick and fast; you may need to rewind while to draw breath.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor script and too American, 18 Mar. 2013
This review is from: We Are The Night [DVD] (DVD)
There are two many American elements in this film: the shoot-out with SWAT; the final fight. What was good about Let the right one in and Not like others was that they were immersed in their country of origin. We are... does not feel German beyond the German voices. Of the vampires the two leads are not good enough and do not attract attention. Charlotte is clearly the most interesting but gets the least screentime; she is at the centre of the film's only poignant scene. It would have been better to have built the film around her. Of the deleted scenes the extended dialogue in the final fight adds subtlety to what is otherwise just another punch-up. The scene after the opening scene in the aeroplane - which gives the film a good start - should have been left in too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor prequal and too short, 18 Mar. 2013
This review is from: [Rec] Genesis [DVD] (DVD)
The first two Rec films were good but this is not. It is also too short at 77 minutes; yet the extras include deleted scenes! The feisty heroine does not get enough screentime; the downbeat ending is annoying. Despite 'Genesis' in the title the film does not lead into the first film. The cover pic has the heroine with her wedding dress torn so her right leg is exposed; in the film her dress is torn so the left leg is exposed.

Anvil: The Story of Anvil

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the film - a good read, 22 Feb. 2013
This is better than the film and has lots of detail of the early days and the band's history. The weakest part is when the band gets caught up in the documentary and Kudlow and Reiner think they have made it. They haven't made it. They are the subject of a successful documentary; Anvil is still not a successful band. Moreover, while they may well have come up with two classic albums and been influential, they have done nothing musically since 1983. While, say, Vigin Steele and Fates Warning started out pretty generic they developed their sound into prog-metal and expanded their vision. For Anvil the song remained the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than what what it is supposed to be, 22 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Point Of Entry (Audio CD)
The reviews I have read in the music press always make this album out to be a limp squib where JP lost it. So having finally heard it I was pleasantly surprised: this is a good record with good songs. I prefer to the earlier Priest albums which are seen as metal classics. While said albums may well be where the NWOBHM got all its ideas they are not that great to listen too. With PoE JP come up with a decent collection of songs while thise earlier albums were works in progress with riff-based soundscapes with vocals on top. On Sin after sin for example it is clear that diamonds and rust is a cover as it stands out among the other compositions.

1.0 out of 5 stars Now just a Cold War curio, 29 Jan. 2013
I have seen only a handful of episodes but unless they were not representative then Czterej Pancerni is not very good. Yes it looks good; its production values still stand up. It is filmed on location when British and American shows were mostly in studios or sets. There are lots of tanks. But the scripting is poor. One episode has the lead characters having a lie-in and then sort of making breakfast and this goes on for ages! I was not surprised that the first episode I saw had Poles and Russians bromancing each other. This love affair is characteristic of the series and was a substitute for real history in sixties Poland. As propaganda the show's use is reflected in the amount of money that I suspect was spent on it; I doubt if many other Polish shows from this period looked this good. The show's propaganda status has made it an exhibit in the Warsaw Rising Museum. The case for the prosecution is: an episode where the characters cross Poland's post-war eastern border and celebrate that they are back in Poland; and an episode where the commie Polish army tries and fails to break through German lines to get through to the uprising.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly brilliant actioneer! Beats the Americans at their own game, 28 Jan. 2013
Poland has no history of action films so I was amazed at how good this film is. Rivetting from start to finish. On the same budget the Americans could not make such a decent film. The film is something of a redemption for Kloss: a Soviet agent during the war and now caught between the Nazis and agents of commi-era Poland (the main action is set in 1976). There's something of a Vimy Ridge moment when Kloss declares 'I am a Pole!' during a shoot-out with his arch-foe Brunner, as if he is freeing himself of thirty years of post-war guilt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent drama still stands up after all these years, 28 Jan. 2013
This is a very good tv series which stands up well for something made way back in the sixties. It is well-made and tightly plotted. Its main flaw is that Kloss is a dead ringer for the real Kloss: perhaps that kind of made sense in the sixties. This implausibility aside the main realistic flaw is that the Germans don't seem to notice that things go wrong when Kloss is around. He also seems to get around a bit with no one wondering why he is doing the work he is supposed to be doing. It is important that the show is free of the blatant propanganda that makes Czeterj pancerni now just a Cold War curio. If you do not think that you can cope with nearly 20 episodes in black and white then I can recommend the recent film which is better than anything Americans could do for the same budget!
