The Polish Revolution: Solidarity
The Polish Revolution: Solidarity
by Timothy Garton Ash
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars An essential read, 7 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Sixty years after winning the most important 20th century battle you've never heard of, Poland began Communist Europe's demise. Garton Ash's book is an essential read for the not remembered/acknowledged enough contribution of Solidarnosc and all that to the demise of the iron curtain and all that. It is a shame therefore that his writing style is so sober and he only unleashes his passion in the three reflective essays that end the book: they are worth reading even if you do not read anything else here: Garton Ash sticks it to the Western Left and they deserve it. He also sticks it to the Germans - east and west - and they deserve it too with their 'Wind of change' and victim status because of the Berlin Wall - its collapse adopted by the West as the symbol of communism's fall and boo hoo hoo was it not so terrible. The picture Garton paints is of the Germans untermensching and doing little until it was safe to do so.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pointless and lazy, 16 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Scream 4 [DVD] (DVD)
This film is pointless and lazy. Even Courtney Cox - the best thing in the series - cannot be bothered and her presence is a few minutes less screen time away from a cameo. It tries to be clever dick and pot-modern or whatever the Scream franchise is so supposed to be but is just annoying and that is the fourth means that you are not making a statement but just out to make money. Hayden Panettiere is the best thing in it - shame she looks too old to be a school child and acts too old too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another overrated film is a dud, 16 Nov. 2013
This review is from: The Cabin In The Woods [DVD] (DVD)
This film is rubbish. I would not be surprised if it began as left overs from Buffy because if this has been a Buffy episode it would have been good. It is not good: it is rubbish. Clever dick plot that just annoys; characters you cannot empathise with or care for; big, loud and empty mayhem to lead to the end. One for the fanboys to get very excited about.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just a maudlin afternoon TV movie really, 16 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Flight [DVD] (DVD)
Well Denzel is good but then he usually is: that does not mean the film is good. The plane crash sequence is good but after that we have TV movie fare that is too long for what happens: which is not a lot. The final sequence and ending are straight out of any number of TV movies you can catch in the afternoon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough story - for fans of the original only, 15 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Black Kiss II TP (Paperback)
BKII has great artwork and I feel Chaykin enjoyed drawing this more than writing it. Most of the writing is stringing together non-vanilla sex-packed vignettes. We get a story at the end but it is rushed and I am not sure we care that much. Did you do it for the money, Mr Chaykin? Fans will enjoy comparing it to the original. Bubba Kenton's demise is different to as described. Beverley is nastier, or maybe just nasty: in BK she was scheming and ruthless but not actually evil. I get the impression that Chaykin did not spend too much time reminding himself what happened in the original and taking notes.

4.0 out of 5 stars A masterclass in what a graphic graphic novel should be, 15 Sept. 2013
This is a potent mix of sex, violence and story: it hits the spot for what a graphic graphic novel. The sexual content will deter vanilla readers but is that a bad thing?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first-rate horror, 21 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Absentia [DVD] (DVD)
The problem with seeing a good film is that writing a review is so much more difficult. If the film is bad then you can go on and on and on. If it is good... This is a good film. The first in ages that lived up to the reviews I read. The only thing I did not like was the inevitable downbeat ending. Can we have someone revolutionise horror films by bringing back the happy ending. Please.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another dud from the Soskas, 21 July 2013
This review is from: American Mary [DVD] [2012] (DVD)
I thought Dead Hooker was a dud and only watched this film as I like Kathryn Isabelle. Having suffered this film I wish I had watched Ginger Snaps again; and so should you. The Soskas may have ideas but they cannot turn them into a film. Thus this film carries on the way it carries on and it pretty dull. It fails to establish Mary as a sympathetic character - hint: if you want your character to be sympathetic then don't have her mutilate somebody and then kill an innocent man. You probably should not try to make a sleazy club owner and his gorilla henchman be sympathetic because they are after all a sleazy club owner and his gorilla henchman. That the Soskas fail to make Mary sympathetic means the rushed ending fails. Also the club owner trying to get Mary to run away with him on an evocative trip along the west coast to LA fails too: not just because evocative road trips do not end up in LA. This film may have worked if Mary had become a dominatrix: but having decide to do this in the body mod 'community' (yawn) the Soskas do not know what to do and so you end up with torture p@orn: the most dumb of horror genres and thus beloved of horror fanboys. Moreover, as body mod is not actually sexy so they throw in strippers and Mary in stockings and sexy dream sequences to give that away. They also turn up in their own film for no reason other than vanity. American Mary is for the fanboys that lurk around horror film festivals and have the hots for the Soskas. And finally: the Soskas are canucks; Isabelle is a canuck; this film is made I preseum in canuckland. So why is it called - for no apparent reason actually - American Mary? Are the anglophone Canadian so insecure in the national identity that they just want to be pretend Americans?

Bitter Legacy: Polish-American Relations in the Wake of World War II
Bitter Legacy: Polish-American Relations in the Wake of World War II
by Richard C. Lukas
Edition: Paperback
Price: £24.95

4.0 out of 5 stars Another worthy read from Lukas, 17 May 2013
Bitter legacy indeed. Poland of course spoilt America's nice little earner by setting in motion the end of the Cold War, thus meaning it had to find new enemies... and it did. So the bitter legacy ended with biter bit. Anyway, as with the other Lukas books I have reviewed a book worth reading for what Hollywood history won't teach you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful... so they are cult masterpieces, 14 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These films are really bad; what was Catriona MacColl thinking by doing all three? You should watch with a notebook so you can note everything that does not make sense and/or is stupid. Nearly no plots; no suspense or tension; not scarey. The gore is good and so is the music but that is about it. Cemetary just drags; beyond at least passes by quickly; city has some of the dumbest scripting I have experienced. Really just for students of bad films.
