1.0 out of 5 stars the king is in the altogether..., 26 Dec 2010
This review is from: The Hangover [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
Look at the King! Look at the the King! Look at the King, the King, the King!
The King is in the altogether, But altogether the altogether
He's altogether as naked as the day that he was born.
The King is in the altogether, But altogether the altogether
It's altogether the very least the King has ever worn.

and repeat....

1.0 out of 5 stars water waste of time..., 23 Sep 2010
This review is from: The Book of Eli [DVD] (DVD)
Oh dear - another £2.20 movie rental wasted.
I found very little that was engaging or enjoyable about this flik.

It plays more along the lines of a western than anything else - e.g.
mysterious stranger wanders through the desert
marauding gangs try and rob him & get themselves killed
mysterious stranger wanders into a town
rough folks accost him & get themselves killed
town leader is impressed & asks a favour of him
stranger isn't interested
town leader tries to force him into doing it
bad guys all get killed...
good guys win.... blah, blah, blah...

So - it's just slow (mostly). While there are some action/tension moments, they all play out exactly how you expect them to. It's predicable and uninteresting basically. And the "twist" is just plain silly. No one would want to watch this rubbish more than once.

The post-apocalyptic setting is simply that - a setting! It has no real value or worthwhile meaning.
I reckon someone on the production team played Fallout 3 and said "hey, this would be a good setting for our movie!"

Better by far to play Fallout 3 yourselves folks, than to sit through this slow, preachy rubbish.
Then for some real characterisation and action, check out Mad Max 2 - a genuine post-apocalypse classic which you will enjoy watching time & time again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth waiting for, 11 Jan 2010
I loved Nick's first book (as might be deduced from my username). On hearing that he was writing another book, I had a reaction almost as priapic as the lead character in this one.

On reading this book however, I felt totally let down.

Much like Nick's recent recording career (of which I was a major fan up to and including 'No More Shall We Part'), he has misfired badly with this novel.

It started off badly but appeared at one point as if it were going to become a 'road trip' adventure where the protagonist learned stuff and "grew up". No such luck - it just didn't happen & it stayed in the same shallow mucky waters that it started off in.

The various 5-star reviewers hare all seem to think it's hilariously funny, darkly comic, etc. - a tragic parable of modern society, and so on. Well that's just a big pile of dingo-doo, mate. It's just a satire (nothing wrong with that, I suppose) - a coarse and one-note one at that. But unfortunately it's very poor and just goes nowhere. It may be of interest to you if you enjoy the writing style but, believe me, Nick Cave can (and has) written far better than this drivel.

I was glad to finish it to be honest. And I was extremely glad to have sold it on via Amazon Marketplace! It would have been a total waste of bookshelf space otherwise.

1.0 out of 5 stars 30 Days of Tripe, 25 Sep 2009
I bought this DVD based on the glowing pre-release guff in SFX magazine (my first mistake). I watched it (my second mistake). It is utter non-sensical tripe & totally boring to boot - the worst mistake an 'action vampire' film can make.

No matter what the writer, director, producer, actors, et al said about this film, it was all flim-flam, to con you & I into wasting our time and money.
All those 3, 4 & 5 star reviewers of this movie really need to get out more.
Maybe they'll rewrite their reviews once their balls drop.

1.0 out of 5 stars dull as ditchwater, 23 Aug 2009
This review is from: Dark Water [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
There is nothing to recommend here whatsoever.

It is tedious, badly cast, drearily acted, unscary and generally dull and pointless all round.
As with the vast majority of USA remakes of Asian chillers, this film has presumably been produced for lazy and/or illiterate people who won't/can't read subtitles.

Avoid it like the plague.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mist Opportunity!, 24 Dec 2008
This review is from: The Mist [DVD] (DVD)
Absolute garbage of the highest order. Actually, having said that, I think it could have been saved by a) better acting, b) a better story, c) a better ending, d) better FX, e) better dialogue.
Without those elements, it adds up to a hokey piece of turged, predictable pap. The "shock" ending is just laughable.
If you turn the DVD off 10 minutes before the end, you will probably enjoy the movie far more.

Dull, just dull. The majority of these stories are just plain uninteresting. Too slow, too lacking in any real chills or suspense. Some are just plain daft.
The pilot episode whets your appetite for the "real" episodes, but they then let the whole thing down with weak, predictable, pondering nonsense. Few stories actually deserve to be appearing in a "spine-chilling suspense" show at all.
The award winning story "They're Tearing Down Tim Riley's Bar" or whatever it was called, is totally spook-free - it's a melodrama, nothing more (and a slow and totally mawkish one at that).
Other lowlights: "Return of the Sorcerer" - Crikey, what a farce. Clark Ashton Smith must be turning in his grave.
"Nature of the Enemy" - You cannot be serious! Utter rubbish.
I could go on and on.
My advice - watch the one starring Burgess Meredith. Marvel (and laugh!)at the bizarre faces pulled by his co-actor. Then donate this DVD collection to your local Age Concern shop.

1.0 out of 5 stars pure sludge..., 11 April 2008
This review is from: Grudge, The [DVD] (DVD)
Completely pointless, dreary, slow and predictable. And NOT scary in the slightest.
Please don't waste your time and money on it.
The original version was over-rated formulaic rubbish - this version is just a Hollywood cash-in. Avoid!

1.0 out of 5 stars dusty and tired!, 26 Feb 2008
This review is from: Stardust [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
Nothing much to say about this movie. I didn't expect much too much from it, yet it still failed to deliver.
Some very poor casting choices. How old are these characters suposed to be again? Tristan is 18 right? So why is he played by a 28 or 30 year old bloke
Same with "the Star". She doesn't look like a teenager (the obvious 'ideal love match' for an 18 year old boy) - she looks about 35!
I don't know how much money Neil Gaiman aquired for allowing Di Bonaventura Pictures to make use of his story. Whatever you got Neil, it wasn't worth it. As might be expected, all the fairytale menace and, well.. all the good elements basically, have been surgically removed from the Stardust novel to produce a twee, predictable family movie. Pass the sick bucket, please.
I take some pleasure from thinking of all the grannies out there who will now buy the original book by accident only for their false teeth to fall out when they read the slaughtered unicorn stuff, etc.
My one star is for the contribution by Mark Heap and the "whoopsie" line.

1.0 out of 5 stars A complete load of bladder-wrack..., 22 Jan 2008
This review is from: Open Water [DVD] (DVD)
I've just watched this movie on ITV2. What a pile of rancid, steaming plankton it was too!
Absolutely pitiful "acting", a complete lack of tension, poor pacing, no action, ad-libbed dialogue... the list of disappointments goes on and on.
Just don't waste your time watching it.
If you're fool enough to buy it, I hope you enjoy your new shiny silver drinks coaster!
