5.0 out of 5 stars A First Class Series, 15 Jan 2014
My wife gave me this for Christmas and it has hardly been off the CD player since. It is a wonderful collection with some well known tracks, some from lesser known artists and some right out of left field like Roland Alphonso's Back Beat.

I only have one quibble with this series and that is the packaging; I have all four sets and all four are packaged differently. It really is time that Rhythm & Blues Records got their act together. There are two really sensible ways of packing the CDs; either in a jewel case or book format like the Cameo Parkway set. The current book package with cardboard sleeves that don't quite fit the discs is not a good way of protecting the discs.

I love this series and the track selection and the pages of notes that accompany the sets are highly informative. Sound quality is excellent.

This is a nice collection and at the time I bought excellent value for money. As well as having a load of the hits of the period there a number of turntable hits, records that were popular with the DJs but never made the charts, Tommy James & the Shondells Crimson and Clover is a good example. A great record but it never made the charts!

All in all a very nice addition to my and anyone else's collection. Sound quality is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hits From the era of American Bandstand, 8 Jan 2014

This review is from: Cameo Parkway 1957-1967 (Audio CD)
This is a beautifully presented collection bringing together 115 tracks which follow the history of this important label covering the period when rock and roll mutated into pop and the rise of the teen idol, what Jerry Lee Lewis called the "Bobbies". This will not fit in your CD rack since it is produced in book format with four CDs and 24 pages of information about the label and it's artists, it's relationship with Dick Clark's American Bandstand.

You'll find Charlie Gracie, Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, The Orlons ,Dee Dee Sharp, and loads of others. The set also includes the label's attempts to cash in on the British Invasion of the early sixties with tracks by Joe Brown, The Kinks and Screaming Lord Sutch among others.

Sound quality is excellent and for those who remember the fifties and early sixties this is a must have.

3.0 out of 5 stars Neither the best nor the worst., 8 Jan 2014

Not quiet a footnote in the history of popular music Chancellor Records had a few hits with artist such as Frankie Avalon, Fabian, Claudine Clark and Jodie Sands but never really seemed to take off. This is an interesting collection since it contains early tracks from Johnny Rivers and others by luminaries such as Eddie Fontaine and Screaming Jay Hawkins. If you're a completest buy it; but if not try something else.

Sound quality is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value Collection., 6 Dec 2013

I only have one beef with this compilation and that is the lack of information about the tracks. Virtually every track has alongside the title 12"/LP version. So which is it? I'd like to know and I'm sure others would too. Having said that there is not a duff track here and thee are a few that you won't find on other compilations. As well as being great for those of us who lived through the period this is a must have for any would be DJ. Sound quality is excellent.

A number of these tracks are available on other compilations and there are also a few b sides. Sound quality is excellent but I confess to being slightly disappointed in the selection. The stand out track for me is the Charlie Calello Orchestra version of the old Benny Goodman classic Sing Sing Sing. The instrumental version of Mick Jackson's Weekend is not the original and has been mucked about with to it's detriment and is really no more than a filler.

Having said that this is not a bad disc if you like brassy ballsy music. There's a lot to like here including Harlem Nocturne, The Man With The Golden Arm, Peter Gunn, Dragnet and a load more from the 50s and early 60s.

If you want to see good acting within a good plot this is for you. Though made in 1957 the themes is this movie have not dated a jot!
Highly recommended.

This is a lot of fun! There are very few dud tracks and the concept of having the answer disc following the original is just what is wanted. Very few answer records became hits; the only ones that I can think of are Oh Neil and (I'm The Girl On) Wolverton Mountain. Recommended if you're a bit weird like me!
