5.0 out of 5 stars First Bernie Book, 21 Oct. 2011
Loved this book. And Bernie could have been Keller, except he wasn't. He could think and there was no violence. But there was attitude. Complete opposite to a noir book. Great stuff.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst Jack Reacher novel?, 21 Jun. 2011
For me this was the worst of the Jack Reacher novels.
Am reading it at the moment and am skipping through parts that are frankly unreadable.
Child always has bad-guys who are one dimensional but they usually work.
The Hook does not and the counterpoint of Reacher in love is too weak to paper over the cracks.
Plot = love story with a very, very bad guy. Reacher wins in end!!!!!!
A novel that does not work.
But all the others I have read to date have been great.
So Child is entitled to one rotten egg.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lazy and Boring, 13 April 2011
I know that I am going to buy the next two installments but truly hope that they are the last.
Magician was fantastic and genuinely rivals The Lord of the Rings but Feist's last few effords have been awful.
This seemed to have been a cut and paste job from a few scribbled ideas.
There was minimal character and plot development, even though it started to get interesting in the last few pages.
I felt relief at finishing the book and shared Pug's sense of boredom with the whole thing.
Feist seems to have lost interest.
His new characters are boring teens and he can't even rehash his original ideas or re-create his old characters.
Plot spoiler alert -
He could not let go of characters he had killed off - some he brings back, others he tries to recreate.
This was a book with real potential but it seemed that the author could not be bothered.
A really sad way to finish a series of books that once upon a time I practically lived for.
So to anyone unfamiliar with Feist or newly approaching the series - buy Magician.

Just reading this novel now. Am surprised at the reviews. It is not so terrible. Great research but it stutters. Shame to develop characters and then kill them off. It is quite unsettling. Agree with many of the reviewers negative comments but feel that they are being over critical. Surely it deserves three stars for being ok. Perhaps some reviewers felt that the author should have spent time on the galleys and written about that.....! Am giving 4 stars to pull the average up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Latest Feist, 20 Feb. 2010
Having read the mostly unfavourable reviews before purchase, I approached this latest offering with some anxiety.

However, I really enjoyed it. It was concise and fully of story. This is a fantasy novel with all the one dimensional characters of that genre. I like Feist's approach. It's all about the story.

But one note of caution. If you have never read Feist before, do not start with this book. Buy Magician and go on the most wonderful fantasy journey ever.

1.0 out of 5 stars Chasing Shadows, 7 Jan. 2010
I really really enjoyed the omnibus edition of the first Orc series and purchased the next two books with much anticipation. While the first book of this new series is ok, this second book is truly awful. This book reads like a bad outline for a computer game. It is a short book that truly drags, yet nothing much happens. There seems to be no grand plot and we merely jump from sketch to stetch. The only saving grace is that the main characters retain their original charm but it is like watching good actors trying to make the best of bad material.

A book to be avoided.

Save your money or try something new.
