Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead: Screenplay
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead: Screenplay
by Tom Stoppard
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Still fresh and original after all these years, 2 April 2012

I saw the original play when it first came out in 1968, and I can say that it is still as fresh and original today as it was then. The screenplay differs somewhat from the theatrical version, and I got it because I am using the film in an EFL course I teach and need the text as backup. The film itself is well worth it, especially if you haven't seen it on stage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant reading, 2 April 2012

I actually use scripts and screenplays in an EFL course I teach, but the film was very original and re-reading the script is another way of enjoying it. Also, Newmarket doesn't exist anymore apparently, having been bought out by another company that does not appear to be continuing the same catalogue, so this is a rare treasure, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful little gem of a movie, 14 Nov 2011
An "on the road" movie, with plenty of subtle humor, satire (mixed with some touches of crude reality) and humanity. Certainly one of my "best ever" movies, even though, as so often happens, it is not well-known at all. The main character's marital problems, as the focus of his change in attitude, are actually not very important to the film as a whole. The story carries along well even without it, and the other parts that follow are the best ones. The H.R. man in the movie finds himself having to accompany the body of a former immigrant employee of his bakery firm back to her native Easter Europe country (Bulgaria? Rumania?) to be buried, and his adventures along the way make up this very fine story. Varying between funny, sad and touching, but also quite uplifting. A little gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning little gem of a film, 14 Nov 2011
I saw this movie at the Lubeck (Germany) film festival in 2010 and enthusiastically gave it my vote for the public's favorite prize, which it duly won. I considered it better than the official jury selection. Superb acting in a very original and very humane story, with all sorts of moral ramifications, and with a quirky happy and bittersweet ending. Brian Cox ("The Bourne Supremacy") does a rally top notch job, as does the entire cast. Well worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice creation, but not as good as the books., 22 Sep 2011

I really wanted to see the film versions of Terry Pratchett's books, and "The Colour of Magic" in particular appealed to me. Not surprisingly, each of us has his/her own image of Ankh-Morpork and the various characters in the books, which may not exactly correspond to what you see in the movie, as was my case. Above all, though, I found the pace of the story too slow. True, Pratchett's story-telling doesn't move along at breakneck speed, but in this case each instance seems to be dragged out excessively. The author spends plenty of time building up ambience, but the action moves along quite well in a parallel line. In the movie, though, it seems that everything is slowed down. All in all, lovely and lovingly-made re-creations of the Disc World, but somehow less enjoyable than the books.

I don't know how believable the story actually is (but is cinema supposed to always be real?), but some of the characters are great, and you'll enjoy watching the build-up and final success of the two heroes, Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith. The title song is worth the purchase on its own, though!

I really loved this film! My subject title says it all. You'll love the characters and you'll be cheering them on before the story is half-way through. And it all really happened, history in the making, though very few people have ever even heard of this. When the Ford executive's wife pitches in to help, saying she had studied history at Oxford but always wanted to know what real history-making people were like, you'll know exactly what she means.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent material for teaching., 27 July 2011

I use TV and movie scripts for teaching EFL, and this is a good example of both colloquial English and its adaptation by Asian immigrants. A very good story, too, though perhaps not so original any more, considering My Beautiful Laundrette and Bend It Like Beckham.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ayckbourn is really good., 27 July 2011

This trilogy is excellent, even though the various parts are different in tone. Very good acting, an excellent and original idea and really good writing make this a very good buy for those who enjoy the theatre, especially quality theatre. These three plays date from the 70's, but they don't show their age at all.

I use this material for teaching English and it is quite useful. The scripts are accurate representations of colloquial English.
