4.0 out of 5 stars A great story but it could have been told better, 22 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you have read the books by Alfred Lansing and Roland Huntford on Shackelton's Antarctic trips, you will note two things: this story is actually more incredibly terrible than the ones they have to tell, a really phenomenal adventure almost beyond belief, but it lacks the story-telling quality and sense of drama that those two authors manage to put into their books, so it actually comes across as less striking. Nonetheless, a must read, as it rather puts Shackelton in his place, a hero perhaps but so pushed by ambition as to cut corners and risk lives in the name of attaining glory.

Extras - The Illustrated Scripts: Series One And Two
Extras - The Illustrated Scripts: Series One And Two
by Ricky Gervais
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Only if you are a Gervais fan, 2 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have discovered that I am not much of a Gervais fan, vis-a-vis "The Office", but I do find this as one of his better jobs. I haven't viewed the related DVDs, so I don't know how these scripts work out visually, but they do work well on the page, though you have to be a fan of Gervais's particular brand of humor to really enjoy them.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

5.0 out of 5 stars An original and powerful take-off on Shakespeare, 2 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is certainly one of the most original and powerful adaptations of Shakepseare ever written. It takes the Bard's orginal "Hamlet" towards the style of Beckett's "Waiting for Godot", so if offers a sideways view of the orignal play, which is interspersed in bits between the duo's dialogues, giving a sort of voyeur's view of the basic Hamlet story. It's likely, though, that Shakespeare himself would have applauded this production.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing after all these years, 2 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I remembered "The Producers" from years ago as a very funny movie, and so I bought this DVD thinking to recoup a high-quality comedy. I have been terribly disappointed. Gross, outdated humor, which not only didn't make me laugh, but actually made me wince! Ah, our remembrance of the past is sometimes misleading!

2.0 out of 5 stars If you like Gervais, then you'll like this, too, 2 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The American version of "The Office" is just a take-off on the British version, at least from the little that I watched it. I had bought both thinking I would get a double treat, but I didn't like either one, too depressingly real to my view! Just not my cup of tea, though the acting is very good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea, 2 April 2012

Gervais's humor is understated and sarcastic, so you have to match him in taste if you want to enjoy his work. I frankly didn't, but it is simply a matter of taste. For something intended as humor, I actually found it horribly real and depressing! I will say that the acting, however, is quite good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Frayn is great, but you have to see it, not read it, 2 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Frayn is a sometimes genius at farce and satire, but reading the play is just so complicated that it's hard to follow and you just miss the humor. Get the DVD and laugh, laugh, laugh.

This review is from: Soapdish [DVD] [1991] (DVD)
What with the cast list I saw, I expected some scintillating humor, but actually it's a bit overdrawn, pretentious, predicatable and not really all that funny. Pretty much a waste of a great idea.

3.0 out of 5 stars The books are better, 2 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am a great fan of Terry Pratchett, having read him since he first appeared and having all of his books, so I bought the DVDs hoping to be able to actually visualize his fantastic little world, but it doesn't work. It's pretty and done with great detail, but Pratchett's magic with words just hasn't been captured on film, and perhaps can't be. Get the books, all of them, if you want to enjoy his wonderful storytelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely, absolutely great!, 2 April 2012
"Sgt. Bilko" was one of the moments of great TV comedy, much like "The Honeymooners" back in the '50s, and it is still as fresh and funny as it was so many years ago. It also makes you wish a lot of things, especially about the US Army, hadn't changed since then. Phil Silvers is perfect as Bilko, and the secondary characters add just the right extra flavor. Perfect entertainment for all, get as many as you can!
