3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting film, horrible DVD, 21 Aug 2008
This review is from: Rabid [1977] [DVD] (DVD)
Even after more than 30 years, rabid works as an effective horror film, and it clearly shows Cronenberg's talent for horror without horror cliches. The low budget shows in many scenes, but it is saved by the acting, even in the small supporting roles. Marilyn Chambers is especially good in the lead.

I would have rated this film 4 or even 5 stars, but I can not give more than 3 stars, due to the transfer. It is not bad. It is very, very bad. The picture looks like a grainy VHS transfer from another century, and for the most time, parts of the image are missing: you only see half a face of an actor who is talking, or heads or feet are cut off at the top and bottom. Do not get me wrong, this is a 1:1.78 anamorphic transfer, so the only explanation I have for the cropped images is this: they had a pan-and-scan transfer in 1:1.33, but wanted to release the film in an anamorphic version. Instead of creating a new transfer, they simply cut off the top and bottom of the image until it fitted the 1:1.78 frame. So it looks like a film, that has been pan-and-scanned in both directions. I have never seen anything like it, and I hope I never will again.

But even with these limitations, Rabid is still gripping, fascinating, horrifying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 26 Nov 2007
This review is from: Eternal (Audio CD)
Miriam's voice is not classically trained. She grew up in South Africa, where she was influenced the native tribal singing. So these arrangements of classical tunes have a flavour of their own. I assure you: this is unlike any other vocal recording you have ever heard! Miriam's versatile voice, along with arrangements by Ian Lynn, is constantly driving chills up and down my spine. If you have the slightest interest in vocal recordings, this is a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, featuring singer Miriam Stockley, 16 Jun 2006
This review is from: Praise (Audio CD)
This is a mixture of chill-out music, tribal rhythms and choirs, and above all, there is Miriam Stockley, that fantastic singer we all know from the first Adiemus albums - and from her two solo albums "Miriam" and "Second Nature" as well.

It is beautifully written, played and orchestrated and will definitely take you away.

I had been searching for this CD for quite some time because it is out of print, and I was lucky to find it here, with the help of Amazon marketplace.

It is a pity that this remains the only "Praise" recording ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series!, 28 July 2005
The original series was produced between 1959 and 1965 and is one of the true legends in TV series history. This DVD set covers the first season of the 80's version of it - in colour and stereo sound.
The picture quality is a little greasy, because the show was videotaped - but this is 80's standard. Technically, this disc set is as good as you can expect.
There are not many extras, but some episodes have commentaries by directors and producers.
Though the material is almost 20 years old now, many of the episodes are still interesting to watch and quite gripping. If you liked the old show, and if you are open to a new approach, you're going to like this one. If you like mystery shows, here's a classic waiting to be explored.
What makes this set even more interesting is that it features a lot of actors and directors that were quite unknown at the time but are real popular now, like Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and "Scream" director Wes Craven.
