Kuhn Rikon 32206 Fondue Forks Pack of 6 Swiss Cross Design
Kuhn Rikon 32206 Fondue Forks Pack of 6 Swiss Cross Design
Price: £16.72

4.0 out of 5 stars Fork me!, 27 Aug. 2015

These forks seem expensive (and with some of the silly additional postage charges that are creeping into Amazon transactions, are even more so), but the cost works about to about £3.00 each, which isn't too bad for a sturdy set of forks which will add fun to your fondue. These plastic-handled Kuhn-Rikon forks are dishwasher-proof, but it's best to let them soak in cold water for a few hours -- or even overnight -- along with the cacquelon or fondue pot, in order to soften the cheese residue.

Many fondue sets will come with a set of forks (such as the Baumalu-385052, which offers a great pot along with a bog-standard stand and burner, but a disappointingly flimsy set of cheap forks) but unless you're spending far more than you ought on a top-of-the-range fondue set, the forks will be forking awful, so just buy a decent set of forks at the same time as you order your fondue set and stick the flimsy ones in your Oxfam bag as soon as you open the box.

These forks seem great: they are sturdy nice-looking with red plastic handles emblazoned with a white Swiss cross and are dish-washer safe; they will also go very nicely with a red fondue pot. Unlike many sets, they aren't individuated with a coloured spot on the end, but if you choose your fellow fondue feeders fairly, you should be alright and not pick-up anything untoward (other than the odd piece of dropped bread!). Docked a star because they are a bit over-priced, but that just adds to the authentic Swiss-style experience!

The cacquelon, or fondue pot, is great: it's a good size and seems sturdy. The base and burner so-so, but these items are much of a muchness (although the base is the right size for the pot). The forks, however, are disappointing and should be replaced with a decent set of forks as soon as possible (the supplied forks might be considered as starter forks, but I would recommend ordering a sturdy set of Kuhn-Rikon forks at the same time as the pot and burner, along with a packet of fuel pods for the burner).

2.0 out of 5 stars "The parasol is fitted with a vent at the center ..., 3 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
"The parasol is fitted with a vent at the center point, this enables the wind to pass through and gives the parasol more wind resistance during those windy nights."

It looked OK and seemed alright for a week, but I left it up overnight and, thanks to a strong gust of wind, I found it broken one morning, which rather spoiled breakfast. It would seem the "vent" in the description isn't sufficient.

UPDATE: I returned the broken parasol after returning from holiday: the wording on the returns form seems to rather more hostile than necessary, although the broken parasol was returned and a replacement despatched without quibble or fuss. The winding mechanism on the replacement doesn't seem as sturdy as on the original, perhaps because there is a bit of movement as the bolts are not fully tightened. I am taking the precaution of keeping the parasol in the "down" position, especially overnight, so as to avoid any repetition of the previous mishap. After all, nobody would relish the idea of waking up to find their pole had broken during the night!

5.0 out of 5 stars flobadob little weed, 30 Sept. 2014

If it seems somewhat pricier than the brightly-coloured plastic type, that's because it's much better quality.

The whole package is very nicely presented, from the folded cardboard outer wrapper, to the bagged two-piece aluminium grinder within, along with a small velvet pouch. The grinder itself has a good solid feel with a nice weight and, even though a comment in another review suggests it is a very small grinder, it is a perfectly functional size. (While the diameter is given in the description, 1.57" or 40mm might not mean very much; a better idea of size might be had by imagining two tealights placed one on top of the other).

Overall, this is a great little object and is likely to attract admiring comments, which might matter to those who put store in such things. If you go for a cheap plastic version, you won't be nearly as satisfied as you would have been had you opted for this one instead. Flobadob.

The N-Word of the Narcissus
The N-Word of the Narcissus
by Joseph Conrad
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.83

1.0 out of 5 stars A Most Niggardly Edition, 28 Aug. 2014
In this ballsed-up, bowldlerized version of Conrad's novella, the publisher has taken an unspeakable liberty with the text in a most egregious and niggardly act of editorial vandalism.

I can't wait for the folio of blank leaves in their in-sanitized edition of the classic children's tale Little Black Sambo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blow Me!, 11 Aug. 2014

The pump arrived promptly, typically over-packaged Amazon-style in a stout cardboard box stuffed with paper. I'm sure an address label on the box containing the pump would have been sufficient.

First impressions are that the device is well made (feels like a decent build quality), but only time and usage will show how well the plastic shell copes with vibrating on the road as the pump is used to inflate car tyres. There are four rubber feet on the underside, intended to afford some protection.

It's also well designed: the shell has decent-sized apertures to take the air-line and also the power lead. I thought the power-lead stash-hole might have been a little undersized, but in use it's easy to stuff the wire into the hole.

It comes in its own little case as well. This is a nice additional feature as too many manufacturers seem to offer a case as an optional extra.

The torch/warning light is also a useful extra feature. Adapters for footballs and airbed-type inflatables are included in rather tight clips in a recess on the back of the unit.

In use, it works well and does the job as one would expect. It pumps a tyre from flat to 42 PSI in two or three minutes.

I thought it would be worth spending a few extra pounds on a pump that will stop automatically when the desired pressure is reached.

So far, I've used it only once, but it seems satisfactory on all counts.

4.0 out of 5 stars That tricky second "o", 23 May 2014
This review is from: Twice (Audio CD)
While Holly Cook's 1970s roots are evident in the opening track, "Ari Up" I wonder if track 9, "Win or Loose" is an allusion to the Heartbreakers' classic "Born to Loose"?

4.0 out of 5 stars I never knew there was so much in it!, 20 Aug. 2013
The UK Amazon page doesn't offer a lot of information about the contents of this Clowes "reader" (although there is a clue in the title: The Daniel Clowes Reader: A Critical Edition of Ghost World and Other Stories, with Essays, Interviews, and Annotations)

Clowes collectors may have amassed some of this material already, but this collection brings together an annotated edition of Ghost World which (due perhaps in no small part to the film version) might be considered Clowes' best-known work, with essays and interviews.

While other stories are included too, this collection doesn't really offer a new slew of Clowes's cartoons, so much as some reprints along with some interesting contexual material. As such, it's probably aimed at the completist or scholar rather than someone who just wants new material. This is fine for me and, as I don't need to spend time researching Clowes with any urgency, I'm adding it to my wishlist.

A table of contents, and a downloadable preview (extracts in a PDF) are available from the Fantagraphics website. Prospective purchasers probably ought to check that out before buying, although compulsive clickers'll have checked out before reading this, especially if they haven't disabled the dreaded "One click".

3.0 out of 5 stars In all honesty, 29 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I originally wrote a review stating that this item had been specifically ordered, along with a new satnav, for a trip to Europe over the Easter holidays, but that the Decresent mount had not been delivered in time for me to take on the trip. I subsequently found that an old air-vent mounted Brodit PDA holder (for a Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 720), which I hadn't bothered to remove from the car after moving from a PDA to a so-called "smart phone", actually did a good job of holding my TomTom Start 60 really rather well. (I'd left the Brodit mount in place because I found that an HTC Desire and, latterly, an HTC One X, sits quite happily in the mount, albeit at an angle.) After I'd posted my original review, I was contacted by Decresent and offered a full refund for the friction mount, which I accepted. I was also asked to remove the original review. However, it is my view that it would actually be more informative to others to amend the review in order to let people know about the refund and the request to remove the original review rather than simply deleting it. Thanks again for the refund! :-)

Buyers should take care when ordering this item because the same page offers two different versions of the device, one with European maps, the other with only UK and Ireland maps. At the time of writing, the product page carries a "special offer" inviting the buyer to take advantage of "Free Lifetime Maps". A dropdown menu on the page toggles between a "Start 60 - Standard" satnav and a "Start 60 - Lifetime Maps" version. If you want a satnav with European maps, *don't* select "Lifetime Maps" from the dropdown menu. Switching between "standard" and "lifetime maps" toggles the selection between the UK & ROI version and the EU version.

Having fallen foul of this bad design choice, I now have to return an unwanted device. While it's always possible to get one from a bricks and mortar establishment, the same device is £11 more expensive from Tesco (delivery is extra on top of that!) and, if the thought of going to Tesco isn't chilling enough, while the EU model is the same price from Halfords, venturing into that particular retail hell is surely something no sane person would ever contemplate.
