An excellent fantasy tale of epic heroes, inexplicable forces, storm flung antagonists. A fabulous, rich read. Fully recommended to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very very good!", 14 Jan 2013

Really enjoyed this one. Gina and Camden are excellent characters and their sparring relationship is fun to follow, sexy and humorous. These Duchess novels contain very entwined plots where the main characters of subsequent books are heavily involved in the plot of the current one. Each book stands alone though. This was one of my favourites. I will definitely be keeping it and I recommend it to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugely Enjoyable, 14 Jan 2013

Really enjoyed this story, the second in the Duchess quartet. It isnt necessary - strictly - to read them in sequence but it does help, more than most series novels because the characters are very intertwined and often the main plot of the novel has actually begun in the previous work. More than begun really.... she really starts the story in the book before - if you see what I mean.
However, this is just an excellent, funny, sensual, romantic story which I thoroughly enjoyed and would definitely keep for re- reading. Both the hero and heroine are thoroughly likeable and attractive and I found the situations in which thy found themselves very amusing.
Do read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old Fashioned Regency Romance, 14 Jan 2013

I really like Loretta Chase, she's one of my favourite authors. I wouldnt say this this was one of her finest - not on a par with Lord of Scoundrels or even in the same genre really. It is much more like the old fashioned regencies of Georgette Heyer - more modern than that of course but along those lines. The humour is there of course. I enjoyed it a lot and can recommend it to you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Dire, 14 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I borrowed this in the library scheme which was just as well as I'd have wanted my money back if I'd paid money for it. Not terribly well written and such a ludicrous plot. Or maybe I just really don't like supernatural romances. And am pretty fed up with "highlander" ones too. Have read much much better. This is pretty poor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gothic Romance Well Done, 4 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really enjoyed this rather gothic romance, set in a mansion on top of the cliffs in Cornwall. Brooding hero, shunned by everyone who believe he pushed his previous wife off a cliff, desperate young governess arrives malnourished after being put on the street by her previous employer who tried to rape her and then ruins her reputation publicly.... surly, mysterious servants!!!!! All the ingredients for a great plot. Then add in the intense attraction between the two main characters and it is an explosive mix. He, believes she is pregnant because she cannot eat much due to her near starvation, faints, and is nauseous. She doesn't realise this and fails to tell him for quite a long time why she is so weak. He does not want to marry again and definitely doesnt want to have any more children. Their romance is quite anguished as he believes that she deserves a better man and tries to drive her away whilst being unable to keep away from her. Strange happenings start to occur and it becomes clear that someone is trying to murder her. There is a very exciting climax to the story which I won't give away. Anyway, its a good pageturning plot, the gothic aspect making it very different from the usual run of historical romance of recent years. It is rather like a hotter version of a Daphne du Maurier or a Victoria Holt or even Jane Eyre. I enjoyed it very much and I recommend it to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - funny, sad and sensual, 4 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really enjoyed this book which was the first I had read of the Duelling Pistols series, even though it is the last in that trilogy. I always enjoy a "woman disguised as a man" plot and this was the best one I have ever read. Victor's increasing deseration to remove "Leonard" from his vicinity due to his strange and overwhelming sexual attraction for the "lad" is very funny. He believes he is going mad when he no longer finds the interest to take up the offers of numerous women of his acquaintance, but the very thought of touching Leonard sends him insane. In the end he challenges Leonard to a duel in an attempt to get him to flee the country and after that the truth is revealed. From that point, the story becomes a more usual plot where the two lovers are kept apart by emotional back history despite their intense love and desire for each other. Lydia's brothers turn up to take her back to America and a subplot begins between her brother Trevor and Lady Helena. Absolutely excellent novel, well plotted, well written: funny, sad, hot.... I thoroughly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappoint, 4 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have enjoyed the other Darcy books by Victoria Connelly but this one rather left me cold. It felt terribly contrived, which it was of course, not just in plot terms. All of the previous characters snowed in at a country house during a Xmas Austen convention..... and someone among them is a thief. It was all too obvious who it was and there was little other plot going on at all. Plus of course with all of the romances already settled by the previous books, not a lot of romantic interest. At a very cheap price, it is worth it if you have read all of the other books and just want a catch up with the characters. However, if you read it first, I suspect it would put you off reading the others which would be a great shame.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent love story, 24 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Really enjoyable, well written and with two likeable main characters and a host of excellent secondary ones. Unlike a lot of stories, this one had a plot that actually hung together and made some sense. The love scenes are passionate and scorching hot - these two have explosive chemistry. And its an interesting match - the straightlaced, always in control governess/companion and the rakish lord. There is the necessary massive misunderstanding that sets them at loggerheads for much of the book and some very surprising twists in the tale towards the end. I really enjoyed it, will be keeping it and reading it again. And crucially now I want to read the others in the series. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great great love scenes, 24 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My first book by this author but not my last. I really enjoyed this book especially the love scenes which are scorching hot. The dialogue is particularly good in them. Ryan is an amazing hero - absolutely top notch. The plot is good. Its complicated, sometimes - in my opinion - overly so. There is quite a lot of complicated boardroom shenanigans some of which I didnt think were particularly well explained and consequently that aspect of the story was a bit confusing. I'll have to read it again. Plus the "secret" from her past was a bit of a rabbit pulled out of a hat. Not sure why that whole thread was needed. There was enough plot and obstacles with her being an engineer in a man's world etc etc. I liked the supporting cast of brothers and look forward to their stories now. This is an undoubted keeper but I did think a hefty edit in one or two places would have vastly vastly improved it and lifted it into the stratosphere.
