5.0 out of 5 stars Just what was needed, 30 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was looking for something to use for office power points and occasional DVD use at home. The spec was much improved by getting a small plug in thingy to change the slides. As is apparent from my comments, I really am not a technical person but this did exactly what it said on the tin and as it required not much more than plugging in, even I was able to get it working!

Spiritual Pilgrims: Carl Jung and Teresa of Avila

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting comparison, 30 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an interesting comparison between two great thinkers: Carl Jung and Teresa of Avila. The author provides an accessible introduction to the thought of Jung which considering the extraordinary breadth of Jung's life work is wisely limited to his thoughts on personal transformation and religious symbolism. John Welch as a Carmelite of the Ancient Observance does not claim to be a Jungian expert and the spirituality of Teresa's Discalced Carmelite reform is equally not his home territory. What therefore may appear at first glance to be a weakness is actually one of the books strengths as it makes it accessible to anyone new to thinking about the crossover between the 'languages' of the mystical tradition and depth psychology. The subject is well set out and clearly invites further reflection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A useful volume, 31 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Maximus the Confessor seems to be getting more of the attention he deserves in recent years. A good selection of commonly quoted sources is available elsewhere in the excellent 'Classics of Western Spirituality' series. This volume is a real bonus as it makes available an alternative selection from the 'Ambigua'. For myself, as someone beginning to find my way about Maximus, this edition would have been worth buying for Andrew Louth's excellent 77 page introduction alone.

Word and Silence: Hans Urs Von Balthasar and the Spiritual Encounter between East and West
Word and Silence: Hans Urs Von Balthasar and the Spiritual Encounter between East and West

4.0 out of 5 stars A very usefully focused study., 31 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The range of the thinking of Hans Urs von Balthasar is so vast and also spread across the many books that he wrote so it it particularly useful to have a study that concentrates on one aspect of this huge output. This book looks at von Balthasar's relationship with the East. Raymond Gawronski uses the term 'East' fairly broadly to encompass neo-Platonism, the Eastern Christianity focused around Evagrius Ponticus and pseudo-Dionysius with occasional forays into Buddhism. The author illustrates his study with many quotations so the copious footnotes locating these references amongst von Balthasar's vast output is very useful for anyone who wants to follow them up. Unfortunately for the English speaker the references are to the original German editions but at least one has somewhere to start looking! Not light reading but a real help to anyone trying to get closer to this great thinker.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction, 27 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is good to see such a useful introductory text being available. I fear that St John of the Cross is often more quoted than read and I hope this book by Peter Tyler will encourage more to get involved in actually reading this great thinker's works. Peter Tyler has wide interests in the field of spirituality, both academic and practical. This allows his appreciation of John to range across the disciplines of theology, philosophy and psychology which will help anyone new to John to appreciate the depth and breadth of his thought and its continuing relevance for us today. This multi-disciplined approach ensures that this book will provide a valuable background not only for students but also for the practitioner of prayer.

A Short Method of Prayer and Other Writings (Hendrickson Christian Classics)
A Short Method of Prayer and Other Writings (Hendrickson Christian Classics)

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful resource, 15 Feb. 2012

A great deal has been written about Madame Guyon and most of it fairly critical of either her alleged Quietism or her role in the downfall of Francois Fénelon. It is good to now have access to two of her most characteristic works, which are available in what appears to be a good idiomatic English translation. It does not ultimately matter whether you agree with Madame Guyon's theology or prefer the criticisms raised by her tormentors: at least with access to some of her writing it is now possible to decide for oneself. Hendrickson Christian Classics are to be thanked for making this available.

The New Dictionary Of Catholic Spirituality (Michael Glazier Books)
The New Dictionary Of Catholic Spirituality (Michael Glazier Books)

5.0 out of 5 stars A tremendous resource, 27 Dec. 2011

Like all specialist dictionaries the price of this book will make one pause. I used it to support post-grad study in spirituality, which I came to without much of a formal theological background so I found this a very useful tool to fill in some of the gaps. G A Gerrard is quite right to say that one should not think that its focus on spirituality implies a narrowness of approach, indeed it would be true to say that 'spirituality' by definition leads to an engagement with a range of modern life issues. Have a look also at the SCM Dictionary of Christian Spirituality (ed. Philip Sheldrake). The SCM approach is less specifically Catholic but prefaces the main dictionary with some very good introductory essays that survey the main issues for someone new to Spirituality. I have to admit that I solved my indecision in the end by buying both and did not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful reference for student of Spirituality, 27 Dec. 2011
I bought this book when I was thinking of doing post-grad study in spirituality. The collection of introductory essays at the front surveys the current issues in the field from a range of perspectives and this ultimately enthused me to take the plunge and undertake the study. I am glad I bought this book as it was a constant help. As with all theological type 'dictionaries' one does not read it from end to end, but I have to admit that whilst looking up headings I was frequently way laid by the many other interesting articles! The editor's choice of approach is perhaps less traditionally theological than the (also excellent) New Dictionary of Catholic Spirituality edited by Michael Downey, but it is none the worse for that and its focus is of course more ecumenical. As with many specialist reference works this is not cheap to buy but the excellent introductory summaries and bibliographies to such a wide range of material really helped focus my reading and probably saved piles of money in the long run.

Theological Hermeneutics (SCM Core Text)
Theological Hermeneutics (SCM Core Text)
by Alexander S. Jensen
Edition: Paperback
Price: £23.75

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful introduction, 27 Dec. 2011
Doing post-grad study a few years back without a first degree in theology I discovered there was a fair amount of background to catch up on! If you need to get a clear but not too technical introduction to what hermeneutics is all about I would recommend this book as a very good starting point.

Divine Teaching: An Introduction to Christian Theology (Blackwell Guides to Theology)
Divine Teaching: An Introduction to Christian Theology (Blackwell Guides to Theology)

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting approach, 10 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I must disclose my bias at the outset: I very much admire Mark McIntosh's take on Spirituality and Theology in his other books which are quite unashamedly addressed at an academic rather than a general audience. This interesting introduction to the whole subject area of theology hopefully will make his particular vision available to a wider audience. Standard theological primer it is not (and there are of course many good primers published elsewhere). What McIntosh tries to do (and succeeds in my opinion) is to convey to someone new to the subject why it is worth doing theology at all. In doing this he lets us share some of the enthusiasm the theologian gets to feel for his subject with the aim of encouraging us all to join in.

Why, given my enthusiasm, do I limit the review to four stars? The unusual approach may not suit everyone. I thought it creative and interesting, a fact appropriately signalled by the interesting graphics on the cover. If that works for you, it's really actually worth six stars!
