2.0 out of 5 stars NOT an entertainment system. Glorified games console., 18 Dec. 2014
This review is from: Xbox One Console (Console)
I have so far found no positives to the Xbox One so far. I own Destiny and MCC, i played Destiny for a month, and MCC maybe 5 hrs total since release (solely due to developer mess ups).

The WHOLE UI is just soo bad, it's slow, it hangs, navigation goes in circles, snapping is awful and never snaps off properly. IF it played 360 games i'd be more patient to wait for updates, but it doesn't and i will have to live with that as it's sat on my 360 atm. The controller is also, bad. What's up with the awkward shoulder bumpers? Other people have also said it's like giving yourself arthritis that much quicker. The thumbsticks are however a slight upgrade.

If PS4 has voice communication working well + all the PS3 features, then PS4 > XB1. Right now, Xbox Live really has taken a downfall, on 360 is was solid, who knows why they broke it. You can no longer send voice messages, opening your friends and message lists takes longer now, and not just because the console is slow!

Lack of sound settings creates infuriating issues to the extent of no voice communication when you use an external sound processor. I have a decent AV Receiver but with the xb1's lack of settings it has rendered voice communication to zero when used.

No dvd upscaling, what the actual firetruck were they thinking. The PS3 did this.

Controller when navigating Youtube is painful. There's like 16 buttons on the controller, but they all do the same thing. Cannot disable buttons or change them, a simple knock of the controller messes your viewing up. It's far from intuitive.

The console has a limited 500gb capacity, almost half is full with just 2 games and NOTHING else. External HDDs are useable but not exactly ideal for a console that is supposed to do it all.

Did i mention the console is slow?

Positives are: console is quiet. It makes a cool sound when you turn it on. I really really do wish i could talk this thing up, then i wouldn't feel so annoyed that i spent £260 on it, but i can't. I've never known a console so bad. No doubt the graphics on games will get better as time goes on, but then what modern PC doesn't excel in that area already? Plus the PS4 is of equal graphics at minimum currently.

The 360 and PS3 supersede this console in every way in my honest opinion. I honestly think you'd be better of with a cheap I3 PC for media and 360 or PS3 to game on. Wait until another year before buying. The console's limitations just raising their heads...

Astell and Kern AK100 Personal MQS and 32GB Ultimate Portable Hi-Fi Music Player

3.0 out of 5 stars If i'd known of the issues before hand, i wouldn't of bothered., 19 July 2014
The Good:
Superb audio. A very neutral/ balanced/ flat sound.

Able to turn gapless on and off.

AMOLED screen. These are the best, watch video on them and you'll see why.

Dual Micro SD card storage.

Build quality is good. Very smooth, good looking unit. Feels tough.

Multiple playlist creating on the go.

USB DAC with recent firmware update.

Digital in, Digital out with a Optical to 3.5mm converter (few pounds at most as it's only a connector and doesn't actually do anything to the signal)

The bad:
The battery. Unimpressive.

The buttons just aren't nice. Little circle things.

It cuts off the end of mp3s. WTF indeed. No firmware updates have fixed this, and according to forums, the last update has now rolled out.

This thing is quite block like. Given it's size, i'd prefer an increase in length for a bigger screen and battery. It's also awkward as hell to use one handed. This is personnel preference, but certainly would help with other issues.

The roller wheel volume control is a nice touch, but essentially pointless. It changes volume in half increments, a button can do that just as well/ quick/ precisely. Gets in the way, weak spot for potential damage. (it can be put on hold to prevent accidental use though)

The EQ. Urgh. Ever used a Cowon J3 EQ? If so you'll be disappointed. One single setting available for use, and not as precise due to the small touch screen.

The user interface just isn't that well tested. Little things like having to turn the screen on, to turn the player off are annoying. I just wanted to hold the off button to turn it off.

No "album artist" search. Either Album, Folder, Artist, Genre, Playlist, Most Played.

Searching the Genre gives the list of ALL songs. Not separated by folders/ artists/ or even album.

Doesn't play continuously from folder to folder. It'll stop at the last song.

Small screen as mentioned makes scrolling songs a pain, so much so, it's endlessly annoying.

Doesn't work so well with a fresh Windows 7 install. I have to plug and unplug, then plug in again for the AK100 to be recognised. I've played with the drivers etc.

The manual says "not to remove SD cards regularly". So you transfer slowly through the USB 2.0 cable instead. Not such a big issue for me, but for some.

You can only add songs to a playlist when you're playing the song that you want to add. You cannot rename the playlists. They're named "playlist 1" "playlist 2" etc.

Conclusion.
If you want superb audio at any price, AK100 = win.
If you want convenient digital out in a small device, AK100 = win.
If you want a Walkman or Ipod feature/ style/ usable player, AK100 = loose.
If you want Cowon battery and EQ, AK100 = loose.

For me, too many loses. If i could swap this for a more modern Cowon, or a Sony high quality player, i would straight away. Hell i'd take any piece of electronical equipment of the same value as a swap.

Equipment used for sound review:
UMX3s. Excellent. Smooth, controlled, precise. Lack of warmth without EQ which i just then change to another headphone
DT990 premium 32ohm. Increased control, more precise and clear vocals.
M50. Brings out mids excellently. Not heard this headphone perform that well before.
Momentums. Removes the warmth slightly, and increases the control of lower end.
DT1350- Very bright now. Ideal for Beyer fans.

Can't be bothered to remind my myself of other bits the headphones as this isn't a headphone review. Just a guidance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special, just the seasons 1-7. All good watching!, 19 July 2014

Seasons 1 to 7. I enjoyed re-watching them all at a great price (second hand on here).

If you don't know Only Fools and Horses and are born in the 90s or later i'd probably avoid.

I can't see anything on these not to like. I'm not one who's into special features etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't prevent sur-charge/ overload/ over current etc., 19 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Didn't work as described for me. While it's well made and feels quite robust, paying £10 for it seems a bit much.

The problem is, the anti- surge/ overcharge/ heat magic doesn't work. It doesn't prevent my sat nav turning off under the same circumstances as using a portable battery pack. I can remove the charger then turn the ignition and re-plugin the charger and the sat nav stays on, but if the charger stays in while the ignition is turned, then the sat nav crashes and turns off. Tried with more than one sat nav too.

If this is an error of user then i'll happily change the rating, but from the example above i can't see how the charger is possibly preventing any issues i'm having.

I think i'm going to keep the charger, purely because i cba to send it back to buy a relatively cheap one that is also branded and save £2/3.

I bought the product due to it's description which it is not fulfilling, so it's not possible to rate it higher when cost is taken into account. £5 i would of settled for garbage, but £10, nah.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best tribute album to FF i've heard, 30 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A superb track listing. Could be better, could be longer, but far from bad. Looses a star as this is a short album. Why only one song from FF9??

The tracks are done wonderfully. They don't stray away from the originals and use a good amount of instruments to keep them sounding original, precise and enjoyable.

This is on the same level of enjoyableness as Distant Worlds in my honest opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Screw GW, this rules., 30 Dec. 2013

4 long strips about 7" long. Keep your hands wet, and mix the blue and yellow together. It hardens fully over a day but within 10 minutes it gets progressively hard. Though you don't need to work quick because little at time!

I have no idea how the GW stuff is, but i know it's expensive. This stuff doesn't not do anything i want it to, so there's no way i'd pay Games Workshop's rip off prices when this does all i need it to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, 30 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Us Vs. Them (Audio CD)
Heard one song called "three more" and i was hooked. The lead singer's voice is something special, or at least to me it is. To me she has a home/ self learnt voice, slightly loose, soft and sounds like there's some real emotion behind it.

The songs all differ from each other, instrument wise. But i've not read any of the lyrics and just have listened to them so can't comment on that. They are enjoyable to listen to, and i seem to remember they do hold some good stories.

The pace is slow, medium. Far from hardcore, but of the speed to call it some sort of punk.

I find this enjoyable to listen loud or quite. It's just enjoyable with that voice.

Though i think this band is a one hit wonder. Shame, as this album is awesome.

3.0 out of 5 stars A mix of the good, bad, and average., 30 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Obviously this is going to all be personal preference. But i strongly think this album holds a large mix of different sounds & styles.

For the 7.50 you could buy something else that you KNOW is good, but i've never heard of any of these artists so wanted to try it. Worth the money if you've got it spare, but hardly a must buy.

Some cool tracks on here, with a good proper neuro style to some of them. The album however can and does feel cheap sometimes. Though familiar with heavy hitters like BSE, Prolix etc may find this album a bit tame.

Though really, worth a listen if you want to hear something different but want to stick with this style. You may like it more than me.

I'm a big fan of the dark DnB side. Rarely listen to liquid/ dance floor stuff. But this track is catchy, fun and upbeat with great vocals. Can't fault it, a must download for anyone into liquid, dance, electronical, or just discovering this style of music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lacks build quality, 20 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The sound is very nice. The balanced armature drivers create smooth and precise sounds. Soundstage is excellent and with the right buds (many included) reasonable isolation and good comfort. Slightly smaller than the Senn IE80s soundstage wise.

Lack of bass for aggressive music but with a good EQ (i used Cowon J3) they do come out alright. But NOT for bass heads. You can create a nice bit of warmth for punk and rock music which ends up giving a very enjoyable experience. Classical music gives a very upfront but relaxed feeling. Though perhaps not as calmer as a Sennheiser IEM?

Not a super bright sounding IEM, but closer to Beyer than dark Senns.

Cable is okay. With care i don't see why they won't last. But you'd expect allot better for the money. So looses a star.

Overall, an impressive product. I got rid of my Sennheiser IE80s because they had loose/ uncontrolled bass. These i'm happy with. But for the money, you may be able to get some Hybrids which have Dynamic and BA drivers for the the best of both worlds.

Electronic= no
Punk/ rock= yes with EQ
Classical= yes yes yes
Instrumentals= yes yes yes
Vocals= yes yes yes
Jazz= untested
