Great follow up to Abduction from Christopher. Some deeper themes are present concerning the nature of alien life and how it might attempt to communicate with humans. However, a sure footed light touch in the writing keeps the smiles coming. The two main human protagonists are wittily brought to life with accurate portrayals of the vanities and insecurities of typical rock hounds. The alien characters are also nicely defined and there is a great twist to the story. Four and a half stars (rounded to five) because of some very minor technical inaccuracies which only a nerdy geologist would even notice......

Another excellent short from the eclectic polymath and author, Christopher Menadue. An interesting and humourous blend of science fact and science fiction that explores some interesting themes when two sets of beings interact but have a completely different basis for life.

Cheap, cheerful and does exactly what it says on the tin. I would recommend this for anyone with an iPod and an older car without a USB interface.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good camera, 9 Sep 2006
I'm not a photo expert but this is a significant improvement over the Minolta Dimage F200 I had before. The 12x optical zoom is excellent and battery life is very good. I bought the camera in early August and the batteries have just given up in early September after some heavy use including video clips and lots of picture reviewing. The video mode is easy to use, there's a red button that will activate it no matter what mode is set on the dial and the quality is pretty good (including the sound). However, on one of the interior videos I shot the video appeared OK on the viewfinder but was very dark when played in windows. Windows Movie Maker cleared that up though. The other problem is the 1GB limit. That sounds a lot but because the video is not compressed it will use up the whole card in about 10 minutes if set on high resolution.

Overall picture quality seems very good but it does get a bit grainy at ISO 200 on low light shots. That's possibly because I haven't optimised the settings but other reviewers have mentioned this problem. Outside shots are very good with very natural colour rendition and little sign of chromatic aberrations (purple fringes).

Overall I have no hesitation in recommending this camera for people who want a camera that just works in Auto mode but also allows for some fairly sophisticated configuration options and has a great zoom lens. It gets 4 stars instead of 5 because the video isn't compressed and the ISO 200 images are too grainy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on lower back pain, 4 Oct 2003

A well written book that takes great care to methodically explain the scientific basis for some lower back problems and their treatments, with many quotes from peer reviewed scientific papers. Jim Johnson also uses his fairly extensive experience of treating back pain to make the book a readable and practical one rather than just a dry tome.
I read the book (all of it as instructed!) before trying the few simple exercises that are recommended. There has been a definite improvement in back strength in the 3-4 months since I bought it and, more importantly, a reduction in lower back pain. I still get some pain from time to time but it is considerably less.
The key is to follow the exercise plan as laid out in the book and do it regularly. Once you have achieved the desired level of back strength you only need to do the exercises once a week for maintenance of the strength you have built up. However, as soon as you stop them you go back to square one.
I would recommend this book for people who suffer from lower back pain - even if it doesn't help the pain it will probably help you understand what the problem is without being stuck in a particular treatment method like many other books.
