5.0 out of 5 stars Great to have to hand when the cat has been ..., 1 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Clean and fresh smelling, thick and solid enough to deal with greasy marks that need a bit of scrubbing. Great to have to hand when the cat has been walking on counter tops so I can rest easy knowing the top is antiseptic clean. The large size pack means I don't need to worry about running out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job, and the other job and that other job and all those other jobs you didn't even know you needed doing.., 6 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I switch between virus products every year - still searching for the trouble free, silently running in the background virus checker. I'm starting to realise that there is no such thing. Even the products saying the place minimum load and automatically adjust for demand on your PC - whenever it's running my machine slows right down. But it's a necessary evil as a machine that stopped working with a virus is not a situation I care to contemplate. Total Protection sure offers that - throwing everything and the kitchen sink into the package - in addition to virus cover you have parental controls, firewalls, spam and phishing email protection, performance optimising, safe wifi connections and wifi protector. There's even social network protection and a file lock (handy for those government officials who keep losing their laptops). I still haven't found something that can encrypt my laptop if I lose it or it gets stolen (Gdata offers this for my phone but not my laptop) - that would certainly get my vote.

So yes more of the same functionality that you get from the other major virus providers. But this one comes all in one box - so only one installation which is a big bonus. Why only 4 stars.. It's a bit expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back for Good.., 6 Feb. 2015

There is always the temptation to switch to the cheaper brands because, let's face it, dishwasher tablets are expensive and as long as the dishes are clean what's the difference between Finish and Lidl...? A lot actually. The clean is noticeably better - glasses are bright with no residue - I really hate to say it but you do get what you pay for. I'm back with Finish.

Flick Spot-on Flea Treatment
Flick Spot-on Flea Treatment

5.0 out of 5 stars No more Itchy Scratchy., 25 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Easy to apply and fleas are gone in 24 hours. It's supposed to keep the dog flea free for 8 weeks and ticks for 4 weeks. We don't have ticks around here, it's fleas which are our biggest problem, so I'll feed back once we hit the 8 week target and see how it performs..

HEADS OR TAILS: A Physician's Journey from Doctor to Patient

I always wonder how many doctors choose to practice medicine because of a close brush with sickness for themselves or their family or because their parents wanted the prestige of a medical person in the family. I know which type I'd rather have as my physician. Dr Varughese clearly describes the pain and challenge of enduring a serious illness in ways many doctors simply do not understand. If you have never been ill you may sympathize but you can only empathize if you have walked that same difficult path.

As a cancer survivor I recognize the same history of anxiety, the same childhood lack of a mother's love. Joseph questions why he got cancer and surely the roots of illness are formed in these kinds of early trauma. I've often asked Dr friends to check their most frequent patients and see if they had birth trauma or early childhood instabilities - in my work as a therapist all but one of my clients had birth or early trauma. This is an area that requires research as treating children most at risk in their early years can relieve much suffering and catastrophic illness in later life. There's a much quoted statistic that stress is the cause of between 70-90% of all illness. Dr Varughese demonstrates the truth of that statement as he clearly states he didn't have the other risk factors for cancer, but he did have an anxious personality.

4.0 out of 5 stars A helpful and supportive guide bringing lots of exercises to inspire you, 4 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The bad news is nobody can teach you to be a great writer .. You either have the gift or you don't. The good news is this book can make any writer write better and provide heaps of inspiration when you get stuck. Keep it to hand when you are writing and turn to it for guidance with the muse runs off for the day (or the month)! There are always days when the well runs dry and inspiration is just a vague distant memory; but Maggie's book provides emergency supplies of writing tips and can open untapped reservoirs of creativity that you didn't even know you had. The book starts with a severe reality check. 25 books earn 65% of all the revenue from book every year. Yes that's right a paltry 25 books out of the 250,000 books published in the UK each year. A piddling 0.01%. Not great odds, but still greater than winning the lottery! So she suggests you find a compelling reason to write as you will be spending a lot of your time on something that even if it gets published, may not be read by a huge number of people.
So, do you still want to write it?
The other side of the coin is considering that even if your book only inspires or supports a handful of people - isn't that good enough? You may not get a yacht, but you'll have made a difference to someone's life? Those who have a drive to write will do so regardless of money or fame or whether it actually ever gets read by anyone else. Writing is an inner drive that some people have; a need to express some thought or idea, and birth it out into the world. If you have that drive, this book can help you and support you along the way. Good luck!

Zyliss Acid Etched Classic Drum Grater
Zyliss Acid Etched Classic Drum Grater
Price: £11.79

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes short work of hard cheese, 4 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A fairly robust little grater, worked fine with peccorino and parmesan cheese. I'm not sure what difference acid etched blades makes but it did seem to make short work of the hard cheeses. Mozzarella was a bit messy but once it's melted who cares! Definitely better quality than my old hand grater that was plastic and broke after a few months. Hopeful that this one will last a lot longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't expect to like it so much!, 4 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'm not a Burberry fan, but I have to say the Eau de Toilette was a really nice surprise. It's a lovely scent, quite gender neutral, and while probably a little intense for daily wear, it's really good to wear on a night out. Much to my surprise I would recommend!

Adulation

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read with plenty of twists and turns along the way, 4 Jan. 2015

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This book is about two people- Danny Masters, a successful writer who is also a recovering alcoholic and Sunny Smith, a great fan of his. Sunny is a storeroom manager in a book shop and an unpublished writer herself. She has been unlucky in love but has two very good friends who try to kickstart her life by setting her 40 tasks to achieve in her 40th year. One of these tasks is to sleep with Danny Masters who seems such a distant figure, that, to her, the task has failed before it has even started. However, chapter by chapter, as we get to know these two troubled individuals we find their lives becoming more closely intertwined. Sunny turns from being a rather pathetic angst-ridden woman into a much more successful individual who turns out to be more than a match for Danny. A good read and although the outcome is not unexpected, there are plenty of twists and turns along the way.

Most aspiring music stars just apply to go on a TV show and get a record deal. Most aspiring music stars stick to a single genre, pop, dance, rap. Pellek (pronounced Pelle Kay) from Norway is a journeyman musician who can turn his hand and his 4-octave vocal chords to any genre you like. With more than 350 songs on his Youtube channel (which he produces at the rate of 2 or 3 a week) you can find original covers of a range of songs from Disney favourites, (I Just Can't Wait to be King from the Lion King), rock anthems (his version of Kiss from a Rose is a breath from topping Seal's original), pop songs Old (Take on Me, by fellow Norwegians A-Ha) and New (Wrecking Ball by Mylie Cyrus and his version is Mylies better...), Piles of songs from cartoons in Japanese and even covers of 50s Crooners with "It's Beginning to Look at Lot Like Christmas" (Imagine Michael Bublé with BITE!).

I'm not sure if this is his 4th or 5th album of original material, (there are several albums of covers) but the newly released Cloud Dancers proves he's not just a pretty face (Oh did I mention he has Slavic cheekbones, and a smile that Donny Osmond would kill for? A face that should adorn a million teenage girls bedrooms).

Cloud Dancers is a selection of 9 original tunes and while the underlying theme is most certainly heavy rock, Pellek combines rock riffs with delicate melodies in complex and sophisticated tracks like On the lion's Back, more commercial tracks like the title track, Cloud Dancers, which has great video possibilities, and Carillon Canticle, which is kinda baroque? but very original. Pellek plays piano, guitar, bass, does vocals and b/vs, and does all the orchestration and musical arrangements too.

So - cute and talented. What's not to like?

My pop pick last Christmas was Pharrell Williams (and look how well he did in 2014). My pick for 2015 is Pellek. A big bold future awaits.
