5.0 out of 5 stars Gears of War, 8 Jan 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Theworld has become a dark, war torn place and you are thrown right into the middle of it as soon as you start playing Gears of War, a game that has been very hyped up, and i was a little scepticle that it would actually be all that great.

thankfully, i was wrong to doubt

You play as Marcus Fenix, a former soldier of COG (coalition of governments)who was sentenced with treason for trying to save his father from the main enemy of the game, the Locust Horde. The horde, are generally very nasty creatures who lived under the earth for centuries, before emerging to kick humanity into submission, why they have attacked is one of many mysterys of the game, but they out-number humans, and have killed the majority of the population.

You don't have to face the enemy alone though, you are pretty much always with at least one extra teamate (the human lemming named Dom) or the rest of your squad (Baird and Cole). The A.I. for your squad is very impressive, with the exception of Dom, but they will more often than not they will provide excellent assistance for you.

Your primary form of combat will be made through good use of cover, while in cover, you are safe from most weapons, untill you try to stick your head up to shoot, you can also use the outstanding "blind-fire" option to stick your gun up without leaving cover, but you will be less accurate. blind fireing becomes essential as the difficulty setting goes up, when it gets to the Insane setting, you will need all of your wits to get past the enemy. The weapons are brilliant, especially the lancer rifle with chainsaw attachment and the torque bow. Your enemys are plentiful and can be tricky to kill, from basic cannon fodder, to the harder enemys like Grenadiers, beserkers and exploding wretches.

The graphics are outstanding, and are one of the games biggest selling points, it is the quality of a top spec PC game. Voice acting is also done perticularly well, and the characters are developed just enough, without going over the top.

To be honest, my only gripe with the game is that the single player is a couple of levels two short, and that is my only complaint, the game is that good, i can only find one problem. With online and co-op play, coupled with the challenging Insane difficulty setting, this game will keep you amused for a long, long time

The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (GameCube)
The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (GameCube)

4.0 out of 5 stars So very close to beating OOT, 30 Dec 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
After a good couple of years in development, The Twilight Princess finally comes to the cube, but it has exceptionally big shoes to fill. The Zelda series has a history of brilliance, with arguably one of the best games of all time in the N64 installment Ocaraina Of Time.

This installment is reeking with nostalgia of that classic game, many of the locations from OOT are present, from Death Mountain to the Gerduo Desert. All in brilliant representation, a personal favorite being Lake Hylia, there is even reference to some of the characters to the N64 title, for instance in the fishing hut or the postman who happily runs around Hyrule field all day long.

The controls are practially the same as the last gamecube Zelda, The Wind Waker, but are very effective, and quick to pick up. before you know it you will be darting around the place and stabbing all in your path. There are also many unlockable skills to obtain, you have to search for them all, but they all come in very handy, especially the Helm Splitter and the Shield Attack. Another treat for anyobdy who has played the other installments, is that the soundtrack is virtually the same, it gives it a nice feel to the proceedings.

The story is an interesting one, as for the first section, you don't know very much about the enemy you are fighting, all you know is that he is trying to merge the twin realms of twilight (the twilight realm) and light (hyrules) to form an eternal darkness. A single member of the twilight realm named Midna is helping you throughout the quest, who will constantly pop up with adivce on what to do next and aid you when nescasary, but seemsto have her own agenda. You go from simple farm boy, to saviour of the lands, it takes time though, with the sidequests and the 9 dungeouns for you to get through, each with some puzzles that will stump a few zelda veterans.

Unfortunatley, with the good comes the bad, and there are a few donwsides to this game, the first being the linear nature of the characters. With Majoras Mask on the N64, you had characters that where fun to interact with and each one had something worth getting involved in, with TTP however, the characters with the most to say are those involved with the story and a few others with sidequests, but most just say the same things. Which to me is a bit irritating, it would have been nice to flesh it out a bit. Midna is pretty much useless in the second half of the game, and is only really handy for teleporting or attaking when you are in your wolf form.

Gripes aside, this is a quality title which will took me a good 40 hours to finish on my first go through, which is alot more than you get from some "next-gen" games. If the game had felt more alive, it would have gotten a full 5, but instead gets a respectable 4, it is however a joy to play trough, time and money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, 24 Nov 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Using the succesfull playing system of the Xmen Legends games, comes Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, boasting bigger levels, tougher bosses and a wider range of characters, it delivers the promises too.

Dr.Doomhas formed the Masters of Evil and have collectivley begun their plans to rule all, with villains from pretty much every Marvel story. To combate this, a taskforce is made of superheroes, ranging from Xmen, Fantastic Four and other singular characters like Ghost Rider, Captain America, Blade, Elektra, SpiderMan and many more. A little bonus for the Xbox 360 version being that it has two additional chracters whic is alway nice.

The game handles like Xmen Legends, you have your four superheroes on screen, and a press of the directional keys allows you to switch to other characters. All the characters have about 7 special moves you cn assign to your buttons and one extreme move which pretty much annihalaltes everything in your path.

The graphics are very nice and crisp and i have not encountered any slowdown in the graphics. The game is alot longer than legends and leaves you looking forward to a potential sequal.

All in all, a very good game that will keep you amused for a long time

5.0 out of 5 stars It's gonna be great, 17 Nov 2006
I was at the Hyde Park show, believe me that is has stuck in the memory, brilliant support acts (except for angels and airwaves), and a great show from the foo's. They played all of their classics, and probably the best moment being when Brian May and Roger Taylor came on stage to do "Tie your momma down", fantastic stuff, order it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Billy Talent II, 9 July 2006
This review is from: Billy Talent II (Audio CD)
the follow up to their 2003 debut (under the name of billy talent at least) and they are just as good as they were then

The band have a very good, somewhat unique style of aggressive alternative punk rock, lots of shouting, some powerfull guitars and great lyrics. The band work very well together especially D'sa (guitar), Gallant (bass) and Kowalewicz (vocals) to create a powerfull vocal combination.

standout tracks for me would be Devil in a midnight mass, this suffering, worker bees, pins and needles, surrende, the navy song and covered in cowardice. well worth buying for a fan of alternative music

4.0 out of 5 stars A great return for the ultimate hitman, 25 Jun 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Mr.47 is back in his best outing yet, the previous Hitman game was a bit of a let down and failed to capture the brilliance of Himan 2, but blood money is here to write the wrongs

The game starts with a training mission to ease you into the game and allows you to get to grips with the control system with few problems. Then you are thrust into the game proper, eliminate your target quietly as a silent assasin or run in guns blazing killing all in the way, the choice is yours

Blood money features a money system which you get deposited into your bank depending on how well you do in your mission.money can be spent on weapon upgrades, supplies or affect your notroiety and lower that factor so that people don't recognise you.

the new "accident" system is a great addition as well, push someone of a ledge or cliff and make it look like suicide, and no one will ask questions. in other areas you can even use NPC's to kill your target for you through some subtle item manipulation, like replacing the fake gun with a real one.

all in all, a great game that will keep you amused for a good while, well worth buying

3.0 out of 5 stars another cup tie in, 4 May 2006
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: 2006 FIFA World Cup (Video Game)
right, usually with a football game, it takes me a little while to get used to the controls, with this, on my first play, i scored 4 against Germany with england.

the game is simply too easy or at some points too frustrating, the game sorely lacks the "create a player mode" and one or two of the player likeness's are off. The soundtrack is what you would expect from a FIFA game, terrible.

avoid this game unless you simply have to have some world cup action before June

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (Xbox 360)
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (Xbox 360)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great skate game, 19 Feb 2006
This installment of the Tony Hawk series starts of a little slower then the others, in that you actually have to learn the tricks before you can do them by taking part in the missions. this is a good thing though as it gives more emphasis on your character being a "noob" on the skating circuit.
manuals, liptricks and slow motion specials are still here with the ability to make your own tricks thrown in as well. There are alot of pro skaters in the game but only really towards the end, there are even a few cameos from celebritys, including Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. The level design is excellent with lots of place to explore, you can carry out the missions or do challenges to get cash, or even the sponsor challenges to earn more skill points.
The level of customization is good too, with clothing, tattoo, skate and salon shops throughout the game. Some of the missions are a bit silly but this is Tony Hawk's and you've got to expect some of that.
All in all, a great game that i would definitley reccomend to any fan of the series or genre

5.0 out of 5 stars Up The Irons!!!, 10 Feb 2006
Having read some of the other problems some people are getting with the stereo version of this DVD, i wanted to put a review in too.
The concert is brilliant, with excellent performances from the whole band, and it shows that having three guitarists does work, and dismays any problems with Bruce Dickinsons voice. The tracklist is pretty varied, with tracks from pretty much every album, standout tracks being "Paschendale", "No more lies", "Hallowed be thy name", "Number of the beast", "Journeyman" and "Number of the beast", the performance is very long going up to about an hour and forty-fuve minutes.
I have yet to have any problems with the DVD despite what other reviews may say, i doubt that the majority of them will be faulty, just a small minority. All in all this is a quality album and well worth buying for any Maiden fan

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe i'll catch fire, 31 Dec 2005
This review is from: Maybe I'll Catch Fire (Audio CD)
i got into Alkaline trio thanks to From Here To Infirmary, and wanting more from the trio, i looked into the older stuff and found this gem. Skiba and Andriano both stand out on vocals, with Skiba raising his voice far more then on some of the more recent records.
stand out tracks on the album for me were Sleepyhead, Maybe i'll catch fire, Tuck Me In, Keep'em Coming and Radio. There isn't a bad song on the album, they are all catchy as hell, the only problem i had with the album was the production on the record, as it was originally converted from MP3's and remasterd by Kung Fu Europe records, but that shouldn't put off any fan of the band. Every Trio album i have heard is brilliant but this is definatley one of the best along with FHTI, i would reccomend this to anyone.
