No Escape Zone: One of the Most Gripping Escape Stories of the Modern Era: One Man's True Story of a Journey to Hell
by Nick Richardson
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Wren overboard and a missile up yer chuff, 26 Aug. 2015

Excellent recap of a 'modern' day survival story. For me there was just enough background story, Squadron life, family life and life aboard an aircraft carrier.
I particularly enjoyed the little stories that led up to the big event, engaging with the Spanish F 104'S and Germans in their Mig 29's, the ships shoe and trouser makers lurking in the deep dark corners of a big ship, a love lorn WREN blown into the nets, private issues with the family that can play on your mind.

It is written in such a way that you can 'hear' and 'smell' the noise and fear. You can picture the characters and understand the pilots thoughts as he struggles with the reality.

All in all a very good read and very well written

5.0 out of 5 stars The 'Cab' with teeth, 16 Aug. 2015

Excellent insight of the junglies doing what they do best, supporting the whole task force in very difficult conditions.

An excellent collection of crew accounts taken during the Falkland campaign, includes extracts of the Wessex and Sea King support and attack missions over that period.

Not all went to plan and the book opens with a bang but you can see why we 'won' the war, total dedication to their craft and trust in their units when all may not have been going to plan.

When you add the life saving role these crews also undertook, sometimes under fire and always in the face of difficulty, it is a stirring memoir to their deeds.

Like others have said in their reviews this a very good read. Considered, honest and insightful. The war in Vietnam appears to have been difficult for all parties, a war played out in front of media hype and an unfamiliar jungle environment. Uncle Sam was never gonna lose...was he?

The last chapter was not what I was expecting and came as a bit of a shock but I suppose thinking about it in hindsight it does not really surprise me, war is dirty and damaging in many ways, not just physical. I am aware Robert Mason has added a few more books to his tally, I will definitely read his after war follow on story.

Very good account of living through and serving during the Falklands war. It is very evident that the author has tried to pay particular attention to authenticity and details. His recollection of names, events and his environment is in my opinion one of the best I have read for this conflict. Another follower of Jonathan Livingston Seagull too, must be something about that book that inspires.....

Very good read. I liked the inclusion of some of the more personal aspects of his life happening during the conflict.

Excellent snap shot of life under war conditions, how losing friends and colleagues really does affect your mindset, life and family.

Very good read and fascinating life. It would be easy to say he was in the right place at the right time but it could easily have been a case of wrong place wrong time not just once but on many occasions. I absolutely get the notion of we are at war and we need to take risks, test flying is always a risk but you can tell Eric Brown is a man who reduces risk to a minimum. He can sense the limits of the aeroplanes he has flown, often repeating dangerous manoeuvres after others had failed and perished.

I did find myself following in his footsteps in the places he has flown from and to, RAF Turnhouse, RM Condor (RNAS Arbroath) where I soloed a MK 3 glider at 662 VGS in c1983, RAF Wittering, East Haven, Donibristle, RAF Lossiemouth, Kinloss, all places I have lived or visited or worked or flown.

It would be interesting to know what happened to his POW ground crew and former Luftwaffe pilot that helped him on his return to Germany, they seem to just disappear and/or be forgotten, It is also true that Eric Brown met, became friends with and lost a lot of aviation people, aircrew, designers, engineers and Commanders.

A natural aviator with a passion for flying, top man and canny Scot.
