The Lewis Man: Book Two of the Lewis Trilogy
The Lewis Man: Book Two of the Lewis Trilogy

5.0 out of 5 stars Hebridean mystery infused with beauty, 10 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I loved The Black House, the first in Peter May's evocative Hebridean trilogy, but if possible the Lewis Man is even better. After a couple of false starts I found I could not put the book down as May skilfully weaves together the hidden history of some 'homer' children' - orphans re homed by the Catholic Church on Scottish Islands - with a powerful mystery. There is so much in this story like one of those paintings that has many smaller almost imperceptible sketches semi blended into the background. Believe it or not Sean Connery even puts in an appearance! The book itself makes me long for the wilds and beauty of the outer Hebrides which I have not visited for far too long but also whets my appetite for other journeys, other islands, yet all this is background to a gripping mystery. The main characters are truly human interesting and lovely individuals in their own right. People you care about. People you would love to meet. Reading the Lewis Man is your opportunity.

A rhyming story about a girl and her cat beautifully illustrated. Personally I would have liked less license to have been taken with the meter of lines and felt a bit grumpy that there were a few non rhyming lines. However I acquired the book as a freebie .... 'Nough said.

3.0 out of 5 stars Leonardo, 5 Jun. 2014

A nice selection of Leonardo da Vinci's paintings but that is all. It seems a shame that the author hasn't made this into a proper introduction for children.

5.0 out of 5 stars a leprechaun begorrah!, 5 Jun. 2014
A fun story for a child who likes to hear tales of the little folk. It's not easy to get the better of a leprechaun but Seamus is a boy who doesn't like to be beaten.

5.0 out of 5 stars magic in your pocket, 5 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Lily's Wand (Kindle Edition)
A gentle adventure story about a young girl who is given a mysterious wand at a car boot sale. Lily's tentative experiments with the wand give her just enough confidence to use it when disaster strikes as she and her cousin fall into a maze of dark underground tunnels. The story may appeal to girls between 7 and 9 who are developing reading confidence.

4.0 out of 5 stars bark twice if you like it., 4 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a simple enough tale written with fairly young children in mind. If you have a dog that gets excited or interested when dogs appear on TV you will completely "get" the inspiration for this story. Not great literature, not full of wise words, but lovely illustrations and a gentle read for a dog loving child.

A very short overview of the symptoms, common causes and possible ways forward for those suffering with depression and those living with them. Personally it helped me regain some perspective on living with a family member who is suffering with depression.

5.0 out of 5 stars love will find a way, 21 May 2014

Boy meets girl is a story as old as life itself. But this story of a captive young man who fell in love with and found a way to secretly meet his girl by regularly escaping from a German prisoner of war camp in Silesia is a story to break the hardest hearts. Horace Greasley waited a lifetime to dare to tell his remarkable story with the help of writer Ron Scott. When Horace first set his eyes on Rosa and dared himself to "try his chances" he can little have imagined when the adventure would take him or the impact that one act of craziness would eventually have on helping literally thousands of POWs find hope in a very dark place. There are parts of this story that read like a fairy tale, and others that tell of the deepest horrors of war. Horace's boldness and daring gave to Rosa the strength and courage to take risks she could never have dreamt of and gave her life a meaning and purpose when it seemed that she had none. As much as anything else the story is a timely reminder that the act of sex itself when carried out between two true lovers has an immense power to embolden and renew. We live in a time when sex has been cheapened and made so freely available that this aspect of it has been all but forgotten but it is indeed exactly this power that is hinted at in old myths and stories. Horace Greasley had a healthy enough young man's lust for sex and he seized his opportunity. But Rosa, in her response to him successfully transformed a daring boy into an heroic man.
