5.0 out of 5 stars Understated genius, 14 Jan. 2014

No one who has a passion for jazz will be blind to the importance of Bill Evans. His influence on those that followed - and those for whom he was sideman - is immeasurable. So this collection - the complete matinee and evening recordings from his stint at the Village Vanguard - is a must. This is the famous trio at its telepathic best. In fact, this isn't a trio; it is one mind with three bodies.
There are the usual Evans Trio standards (Gloria's Step, Waltz For Debby, All of You etc) plus some choice covers. Miles Davis' "Milestones" is given the Evans treatment here to great effect.
As for the actual quality of the recording, the remastering is no bad thing. You could quite easily be in the audience - an audience sadly lacking in what is now a legendary collection of performances.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real deal, 18 Aug. 2013

This review is from: Sinti (Audio CD)
Ever since the death of Django Reinhardt, everyone wielding a maccaferri guitar and playing sinti or gitane music has been proclaimed "the new Django," most very short of the mark. A very few (notably Bireli Lagrene) genuinely revived the spirit of the old master, And for me, Lagrene was the most natural successor to Reinhardt's legacy.
Until the advent of Jimmy Rosenberg.
What Rosenberg has is not only the spirit of Django in full bloom, but also the vibrancy and excitement, and sheer enjoyment of playing. This disc dates from a time when Jimmy was still in his teens (tho already a veteran performer). While it could be argued that some of the solos have too much going on, and Rosenberg is playing too much and not leaving space between the notes, this can be put down to his desire to showcase what he can do, and a lack of the maturity that only comes with time and age. What cannot be denied is that his skill is more reflective of Django than any of his Sinti kin through the decades since Reinhardt's passing.
The opening track "Going To The USA" is a belter, as is the bristling cover of "The Flintstones." There are lots of original tunes, mixed with standards such as Caravan and Limehouse Blues, all bouncing along with that gypsy rhythm provided by Rinus Steinbach on bass, and Johnny Rosenberg on rhythm.
If you are a fan of gypsy jazz music, this is a worthy album for your collection

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection, 18 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I will skip reviewing the actual music on offer here, since it has been reviewed ad nauseum, and rightly each of these albums is considered a masterpiece.
So onto the actual box set. Its packaged small and neat, barely larger than a couple of CD cases together. Each of the discs has its own card cover. Not the greatest way to present a collection I'm sure, but it protects the discs well enough. And at this price who's complaining? The music is clear and bright; there's no 'short-changing' on the sonic presentation. And each disc includes bonus material from the artists respectively.
Linear notes are competent but not extensive - though again, that's not a complaint.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets . . ., 22 Oct. 2012

For leather look, this is a SUPERB item. I read the other reviews, and did take note of the comments RE the flimsy stand, and the metal tabs to hold the tablet in place. They are fair comments, but I think that if a user is careful with the case, then I dont foresee a problem. Mine is still in one piece (in fact still in the condition it was purchased in). The USB keyboard cable is a tad thin, but again extra care should avoid any disasters. The tablet fits as though the case were bespoke.
PLEASE NOTE - the case comes with a resistive stylus as standard. I dont know if there is an option for a capacitative version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nigh on perfect for the money, 1 Oct. 2012

I bought this tablet more as a gadget than a work tool (I already have a powerful PC and an excellent laptop for that). I wanted to go "android" rather than follow the crowd to the overpriced iPad. Also, I have an iPhone, and feel very let down by Apple over the restrictive method of updating.
Since buying it and setting it up (which was SO easy), I have used it for browsing, and for my nonwork emails, sitting in front of the telly. Its just too easy! It's great for games. The movie playback is brilliant. The screen is rapid and responsive. Colours are excellent. There's bags of memory - RAM and Storage. You get two USB sockets, and a transflash socket for microSD. Its got HDMI out and ethernet connection. What more positive can I say?

There are no negatives as such, but there's a couple of things to note however -
1. The battery life is poor. I followed the discharge instructions carefully - which DID help. But in continuous use I am getting around 100 mins before it shuts down. On Standby its over five hours. That said, its a tablet. I don't expect it to last for several hours.
2. The installed browser is perfectly fine, but not the fastest. I checked out a few of the free ones on the Play Store, and have found Opera to be the best one. However, this is somewhat subjective. You may be perfectly happy with the supplied browser.
3. You'll also need a decent music player. There's a great choice on Play Store, free and paid.
4. Sound quality isn't bad, but the volume is quiet even at full pelt. If someone can tell me how to attenuate ... It could also do with a sound booster/bass button/EQ etc.
5. GPS is a standoff box on a cable. Not a big deal, but its worth mentioning.
6. It comes supplied with a built in stylus, but its for a resisitive screen! Come on guys, its not a big ask.

All of which being said, this is STILL 10/10 comparing price for functionality & facilities. Ive looked, and there really isn't a better value tablet out there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Maestro player, master instrument, flawed material, 26 Mar. 2010
Ana Vidovic is simply the greatest classical player in the world right now. Her technical ability is just stunning, and certainly not hindered by the beautiful tone of the Jim Redgate guitar she plays.
Torroba is one the greats, and the "Castles of Spain" set is one of his most popular and performed. So its hard to say this, but it gets a bit tedious. Variations are all well and good, but there isn't enough variation to justify stretching the work out this long. Sorry Torroba's ghost!
However ... The other Ana Vidovic CD on Amazon - "Guitar Recital" is just astonishing. The opening movement from Bach's Partita is just breathtaking. And having been a little negative about Torroba's 'variations on a theme' above, I have to say this collection contains a JAW-DROPPING rendition of Walton's Five Bagatelles. Julian Bream would be proud (in fact Im sure he is!) This is the album to buy if you really want to hear Vidovic's stunning talent. A wonderful album all round.
. . .Even without the Jim Redgate guitar . . .

Celedonio Romero was simply one of the finest players ever; indeed the family Romero were all masters of the classical guitar. This is a beautifully executed performance by Romero. He balances power with passion and fluidity.
The version of Tarrega's "Recuerdos" is in my personal opinion (being a classical player for thirty years) the DEFINITIVE version. I've never heard better.
If you play classical, or just love to hear it played, buy this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adrian Legg doing what he does best, 24 Dec. 2004
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Guitar For Mortals (Audio CD)
This has some great tunes on it. The great thing about Adrian's stuff is that, while it appeals to us guitar players for his technical abilities, this is never at the sacrifice of a decent tune, "The Netsman & the Laird" being one of my personal favourites.
"Mrs Jack's Last Stand" has gone into my own performing repertoire, nestling nicely alongside other Legg gems.
If you've never heard of Adrian, and you are an acoustic player (or just starting out) GIVE THIS A GO - YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. Having said that, it may just put you off ever picking the guitar up again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the tightest musicianship you will see, 24 Dec. 2004
Having seen Pat live a few times I knew just how good his band were. I hadn't though seen the band live with Richard Bona and Antonio Sanchez, both of whom shine on this disc, especially on perennial favourite "Song for Bilbao".
It is Sanchez' solo on "The Gathering Sky" however which proves the real highlight of the gig - possibly the greatest drum solo I have ever seen or heard.
Though it lacks the 'fire' of earlier Metheny Group shows, it more than compensates in sheer musicianship.
Excellent.
