5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, 30 Sep 2011
This review is from: The Magnificent Seven [DVD] (DVD)
The Magnificent Seven is an excellent film about a band of cowboys/gunfighters hired to protect a Mexican village. The performances from the entire cast are superb and they each certainly develop distinct and memorable characters. The film itself is also a lot deeper and more philosophical than you usually get in many westerns and this helps add to its brilliance. All in all an excellent film and one of the finest westerns ever made.

4.0 out of 5 stars A tongue in cheek western, 30 Sep 2011
This review is from: Maverick [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
Maverick is a good film inspired by the television series of the same name. The performances from the principal cast are good even if they are just in the most part playing it for laughs. Overall, a good film but don't expect too much from it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Western, 30 Sep 2011
This review is from: Ride the High Country
Ride the High Country is a good western about two ageing cowboys brought together to do a thankless task. The film itself is a very interesting take on this particular genre because unusually but not uniquely the main protaganists are older men with not a lot going for them who are just trying to get by. All in all a good film.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book-, 22 April 2011
This volume of the lengthy biography of Winston Churchill is a very good book dealing with the early life experiences of Churchill. It is well-written, informative and detailed although the style and structure of the narrative does take a little getting used too. It is also remarkably balanced seeing as who the author was. The figure who emerges in the book itself is a bright but sometimes lazy individual who is at times increadibly pushy and demanding and not very careful with money but also an individual with an adventurous spirit seeking out new challenges and dangers who believes passionately in his own destiny. All in all a very good book about the early life of a most fascinating individual.

3.0 out of 5 stars A slightly weird Western, 1 April 2011
This review is from: The Missouri Breaks [DVD] (DVD)
The Missouri Breaks is an average film about the conflict between a cattle rustler played by Jack Nicholson and the man hired to stop him, a so called 'regulator' portrayed by Marlon Brando. The storyline in many respects is similar to a lot of westerns dealing with the relationships between the old west and the new, big business and small, and crime and the law. However, what marks this film out and also determines how much you enjoy it is the performance by Marlon Brando as basically a sadistic psychopath. Overall, an alright film but whether you enjoy it is really dependent on your opinion of one over the top performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good but Violent Western, 1 April 2011
This review is from: Lawman [DVD] (DVD)
Lawman is a good but violent western starring Burt Lancaster as a sheriff seeking the perpertrators of a killing in his town. The film itself in terms of a plot has nothing particularly original but contains one interesting idea about how far is too far in the pursuit of justice. All in all a good film if pretty generic for a western but with well-acted performances not just from the main star but also some of the supporting cast especially Robert Ryan as a washed-up lawman seeking to keep the peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book About One Of the Most Interesting And Successful Leaders Of The Eighteenth Century., 25 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Frederick the Great (Hardcover)
Frederick the Great by David Fraser is a very good book about the leader who took Prussia from being a middling northern power to being a major European power. It is well-written, interesting and very detailed about an interesting period in European history. The figure who emerges from this book is a brilliant general, an efficient administrator, an intellectual and a skilled musician. However, what it also shows is a very eccentric individual with very troubled relationships with a number of people. Overall this is a very good book about a brilliant military leader who raised his country to the status of a major power by being taken on by most of Europe and holding firm but also shows that Frederick the Great was more than just a military leader but in fact a most interesting man and a brilliant administrator and lawmaker.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Film About the Turning Point in the American Civil War., 25 Feb 2011
Gettysburg is a very good film about the largest and bloodiest battle of the US Civil War. It is interesting and well acted but suffers from two minor flaws. Firstly, it is increadibly long with a large cast of characters and multiple stories which at times takes away from the pace of the central narrative. Secondly, the film makers do seem to have over-romanticised the reasons the ordinary soldiers give for why they are fighting. Overall though it is still a very good film.

Edward Heath: The Authorised Biography
Edward Heath: The Authorised Biography

4.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Book About one of the Least Likely Prime Ministers, 25 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Edward Heath by Philip Ziegler is a good book about the man who was a pretty unsuccessful Prime Minister during a tumultuous period from 1970-74. It is well-written, interesting and detailed although it does suffer from a problem quite common to authorised biographies in that it is a little too sympathetic to the subject. However, the figure who emerges in the work is still a rather unlikeable figure who was rude and at times arrogant and held a grudge against the woman and the people who helped her to replace him. Nevertheless, this work also shows that Heath managed to use his inteligence and abilities to become PM and then achieve the seemingly impossible of getting Britain into Europe. All in all this is a good book if a little too sympathetic to an unlikeable figure whose premiership ended in disaster.

Never Had It So Good: A History of Britain from Suez to the Beatles

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book About the Late 1950s and early 1960s., 21 Feb 2011
Never Had It So Good by Dominic Sandbrook is a very good book about Britain from the Suez Crisis to the end of 1963. It is well-written, informative and very opinionated. It also argues very convincingly that the social changes happening at this time were not actually impacting on the majority of the popualtion. It does however, suffer from the problems you would expect from an overview work but it is still a very good book.
