In The Shadow Of The Moon [DVD]
In The Shadow Of The Moon [DVD]
Dvd ~ David Sington
Offered by TIP TOP SELLER
Price: 3.96

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Documentary, 26 Jan 2011
In the Shadow of the Moon is a very good documentary about the American Apollo project to land on the Moon. It is interesting and informative but does not overwhelm the viewer with technical information and dull details. All in all a very good documentary about one of the great projects in human history.

The Battle of Hamburg: The Firestorm Raid (Cassell Military Paperbacks)
The Battle of Hamburg: The Firestorm Raid (Cassell Military Paperbacks)
by Martin Middlebrook
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book about a Controversial Incident., 26 Jan 2011
The Battle of Hamburg by Martin Middlebrook is a very good book about a series of bombing raids on the city of Hamburg during the summer of 1943 which included the Firestorm Raid. It is well-written, informative and detailed and does not try to make moral judgements about the raids. The book itself explains in detail the build-up to, the actual raid and the aftermath of the bombing of Hamburg and tries to explain whether it was militarily worth it. Due to the fact that it does not try to make a moral point about area bombing it is actually quite a balanced work. All in all this is a very good book about a very controversial and deadly incident.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting book about the first modern war of the twentieth century., 26 Jan 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Rising Sun and Tumbling Bear by Richard Connaughton is a very good book about the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. It is well-written, informative and detailed although it does suffer at times from a problem quite common to works of this kind namely the slightly confusing nature of the actions of military units during the descriptions of battles. The work itself sheds light on to what is largely a forgotten conflict in the West but in many ways was a precursor to the First World War. The book shows quite clearly how Japan developed into the major power in the Far East and was able very effectively to take on the suppossed might of the Russian Empire. Overall, a very good book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointing, 26 Jan 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Carson- the Man who divided Ireland by Geoffrey Lewis is a biography of one of the key figures in the partition of Ireland and the establishment of Northern Ireland. It is on the most part well-written with an easy narrative style but it does lack detail and at time loses structure. The figure who emerges from this work is an austere, unbending and inflexible politician who will go to almost any length to preserve at least some part of the Union between Britain and Ireland but also a brilliant legal expert who was able to win case after case. All in all this biography is disappointing because although in the most part it is well-written the lack of detail and information seriously hinders it.

Friends And Rivals: Crosland, Jenkins and Healey
Friends And Rivals: Crosland, Jenkins and Healey

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book about how political rivalry damaged relationships and almost destroyed a party., 21 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Friends and Rivals by Giles Radice is a very good book about how the relationships between Anthony Crosland, Roy Jenkins and Denis Healey were damaged by rivalries and how this ultimatley damaged the right and centre of the Labour Party allowing for the rise of the hard left which made Labour unelectable for a generation. It is well-written, detailed and fast-paced and although it is at times a little biased this is only to be expected from an author who states quite openly in the introduction that these three men were political heroes of his. The book itself is basically a history of the Labour Party from the 1950s to the 1980s told through the biographies of three Oxford educated near contemporaries. It shows how rivalries between Jenkins, Healey and Crosland as they rose through the ranks within the Labour Party stopped them from uniting against the rise of the extreme left and how in the end this led to Labour becoming unelectable and the formation of a new political party (the SDP) intially under the leadership of Jenkins (who if things had worked out differently could well have been leader of the Labour Party in the 1970s and perhaps saved them from the humiliations of the 1980s). Overall a very good book about three extremely talented politicians who due to personal and professional rivalry were unable to save their party or achieve their ultimate personal ambitions.

Lloyd George and Churchill: Rivals for Greatness
Lloyd George and Churchill: Rivals for Greatness
by Richard Toye
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book about two of Britain's Greatest Prime Ministers., 21 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Lloyd George & Churchill by Richard Toye is an excellent work about the relationship between these two larger than life figures. It is well-written, fast-paced, detailed and very informative and opinionated. The work itself explores the friendship between Lloyd George and Churchill and questions the idea that even when they had political disagrrements they always maintained a harmonious personal relationship. The relationship that Toye brings to life is complex and does not always show either man in the best light but it does show that in many ways this was a pretty unique relationship between the two outstanding politicians of their day. Overall, this is an excellent book.

Macarthur [DVD]
Macarthur [DVD]
Dvd ~ Gregory Peck
Price: 5.00

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good film., 21 Dec 2010
This review is from: Macarthur [DVD] (DVD)
MacArthur is a very good film starring Gregory Peck in the title role as the famous American General. It is very interesting and well-acted although it is neither completely historically accurate or unbiased in its portrayal of MacArthur. Overall though it is a very good film about a most remarkable character who came back from a disasterous start to the Pacific War to become one of the architects of the eventual defeat of Japan and a hero in the United States.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book About the Great Political Could have been of the 1960s, 21 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hugh Gaitskell (Paperback)
Gaitskell by Brian Brivati is a very good book about one of the great might have beens of British politics. It is well-written, informative, detailed and balanced. The Gaitskell who comes across in this book was an interesting character who chose the Labour Party despite his background, rose very quickly once he became an MP and understood that Labour had to change in the 1950s and the early 1960s in order to once again become electable. However, having achieved many of his goals in rehabilitating his party he was cruely robbed of the chance to see his work through. Overall it is a very good book about a great might have been of British politics which is unusually for a political biography very balanced in its opinions.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Biopic of a Great if Extremely Peculiar General., 3 Dec 2010
This review is from: Patton [DVD] [1970] (DVD)
Patton is a very interesting film about the brilliant if particularly odd general. It is fast-paced and very interesting and even if it is not entirely historically accurate it is still a very good film. The cast are all very good but George C. Scott is brilliant in the title role and is very believable as the eccentric but incredibly talented Patton. All in all a very good film.

In The Line of Fire is a very good film about a fictional plot to assassinate the President of the United States. It is fast-paced and action packed and very well-acted with John Malkovich stealing the film from Clint Eastwood with his portrayal of the would be assasin. All in all a very good film.
