4.0 out of 5 stars Historical perspective, 18 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Big Blockade (Hardcover)
An interesting feature of the inter war period is how little was written about the navy until the 1930s. Just as the army started to suffer from Lloyd George's exculpation and denigration of Haig (with him safely dead), the navy started to reaisie that it had actually played a large part in defeating Germany. This book is an extremely useful contribution.

The Royal Navy and the Capital Ship in the Interwar Period: An Operational Perspective (Cass Series: Naval Policy and History)

Price: £110.00

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent look at the period, 18 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is more about the Royal Navy than the capital ship. Personally, I think it is an essential counterpoint to Roskill's history of the period, although it doesn't pretend to have the latter's breadth.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new look at the North African campaign., 17 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A truly outstanding contribution to the literature. The author has looked in detail at the morale of British (including Australian, New Zealand and South African) forces during the North African campaign. He has, I believe, taken the study of this campaign a great step forward, and has given a new dimension to understanding of how the army fought at the very basic level, the people and how their morale and motivation affected higher command decisions. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Despite the title, mainly about the German army on the Western Front, 17 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Based on the author's PhD thesis, this book looks mainly at the morale of the German army on the Western Front, but also the British Army. The collapse referred to in the sub-title is of the German Army!. It is based on letters, intelligence and combat reports. It is an extremely useful contribution, but I feel a better discussion of what actually comprsies and contributes to morale would have made it more useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars More First World War from Gary Sheffield, 17 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent multi author book edited by a writer who must now be regarded as the best writer about the Western Front. The book looks at how the command structures worked at various times and at various levels and how and why changes took place. It is difficult to single out any one contributor, they are all first class. I very strongly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Possibly over recommended!, 17 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Heart Broke In (Hardcover)
I bought this book on the basis of a good review in 'The Economist'. I rather lost my way, as characters appeared who to me had no place in the story or in the sequence of the story. Possibly my fault, not being up to reading modern literature, but I couldn't veven finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long overdue biography, 17 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An extremely useful contribution to the history of the Second World War and after. It is a very readable, but thorough biography of one of the commanding officers of the X craft that attacked the Tirpitz. It is also a very useful insight into the post-war navy. Strongly recommended.
