This review is from: Rise of the Continents [DVD] (DVD)
This was not only educational but a very enjoyable series to watch. Iain Stewart's easy going style of presentation made the subject very interesting. And the documentary brings into perspective the great passage of time over which the continents have formed and are still doing so today. Definitely recommended!

This is a beautifully illustrated book which describes the quality of numbers. It is more of an introduction that the reader may use as the basis for further research and investigation. I did learn many new things and it has rekindled my interest in numbers and their pattern.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fantasy Tale!, 15 Jun. 2014

This book was a pleasure to read with its imaginative story set in a fascinating world where the clan elemental masters control fire, water, earth and air. This is the tale of Jetta, a Firedancer trained to fight the elemental fire through dance. Having been assigned to protect a remote community she finds that the dance forms, used since earliest times, no longer have any effect and must learn new lessons and make new allies where she least expects.

A great fantasy tale and I can't wait to read the other books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The history of Science and Technology in West Africa, 1 Jun. 2014

We are so used to associating West Africa with the transatlantic slave trade that it is easy to overlook the fact that during the medieval period the cities of Timbuktu and Djenne (in that region) were also centres of learning and scholarship.
In this short work, Robin Walker presents many contributions to science and engineering which have come out West Africa. These topics cover mathematics, astronomy, medicine, metallurgy, architecture and much more.
As always the author has documented his sources and provided plenty of references for further reading. Another excellent contribution to African history and definitely recommended reading.

Black Genesis: A Resource Book for African-American Genealogy (Gale Genealogy and Local History)
Black Genesis: A Resource Book for African-American Genealogy (Gale Genealogy and Local History)
by James M. Rose
Edition: Paperback
Price: £18.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for researching African-American family history, 26 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First published in the 1970's, "Black Genesis" (in its second edition) is still an excellent resource for genealogy research. Despite being very focused on African-American genealogy in the US states, there are sections covering Canada and the Caribbean. Having started investigating my family history, I have been looking for tools and guidance to help me and this book is very applicable to the work I am doing on my African-Caribbean ancestry.

Definitely recommended for African-Americans researching their family history.

12 Years a Slave [DVD] [2013]
12 Years a Slave [DVD] [2013]
Dvd ~ Chiwetel Ejiofor
Price: £4.99

4.0 out of 5 stars 12 Years a Slave!, 15 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film was at times be very hard to watch and Steve McQueen has not held back in portraying an unrelenting cycle of physical and psychological violence and abuse. I think we have become accustomed to having a certain level of amnesia about slavery; well it was a long time ago and it couldn't have been that bad, could it? But watching "12 Years a Slave" is something of a shock to the system as there is nothing to temper the suffering.

Eliza's despair, Patsey's tortured life and Solomon's reunion with his family after gaining his freedom were for me some very moving parts of the film! With some excellent acting from the cast especially Ejiofor as Solomon, Fassbender as Epps and Lupita Nyong'o as Patsey, I think Steve McQueen has done a great job and this is definitely worth watching.

This is a gripping tale based on the true life experiences of Solomon Northup. Born free in a northern US state, he is tricked into slavery and ends up living in bondage for 12 years before being liberated. Recommended viewing.
