Black Liverpool: The Early History of Britain's Oldest Black Community 1730-1918
Black Liverpool: The Early History of Britain's Oldest Black Community 1730-1918
by Raymond Henry Costello
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Liverpool, 5 Oct 2014
This book deals with what is possibly the oldest continuous Black community in the British Isles. Whilst it dates back to before the American war for Independence, this community has for long been overlooked, ignored and has a history has been little known outside Liverpool.

Starting off with the Black Loyalist (veterans of the American war for Independence who fought for the British Crown) through to the more recent arrivals, Ray Costello presents details of the many individuals who have left their mark on the city.

This is a fairly good guide covering not just the usual tourist spots but something of the culture and history of the island. With plenty of photos and a number of maps, it would certainly be a valuable guide for anyone visiting St Lucia.

This is another excellent addition to the story of Black people in Britain and a joy to read.

The Spirit of Intimacy: Ancient Teachings in the Ways of Relationships
The Spirit of Intimacy: Ancient Teachings in the Ways of Relationships
by Sobonfu E. Some
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars The Spirit of Intimacy, 15 Sep 2014
"The Spirit of Intimacy" provides a very refreshing prospective of relationships and intimacy in the traditional African setting. There is much to think about in this book and it did have me looking at the relationships I maintain with those around me. Indeed there may be valuable relationship lessons to be found in its pages even for us living in Western Society. Recommended reading!

African Mathematics: History, Textbook and Classroom Lessons
African Mathematics: History, Textbook and Classroom Lessons
by Mr Robin Walker
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.30

5.0 out of 5 stars African contributions to the Science of Mathematics, 12 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ever since reading Claudia Zaslavsky's "Africa Counts" in the 1990's, I have had a keen interest in the contribution that African people have made to the science of Mathematics.

In "African Mathematics", Robin Walker and John Matthews deal with the history and development of the science in Africa, both as an abstract study and a practical tool. We find Africans working with the more well known aspects of the science such as geometry and algebra, but in addition we come across some unusual calculating techniques and numerical systems! Along the way the author’s describe prehistoric bones inscribed with numerical data and the design of the cornrow/canerow hairstyles of African Women which are based on fractal geometry!

To encourage learning and thinking about the subject, the second part of this book is presented as a series of classroom lessons containing a number of Mathematical questions and problems. This is a useful resource to support classroom teaching.

Overall this book presents the subject extremely well and has an excellent reference section for further reading. I would certainly recommend this book.

Black Poppies: Britain's Black Community and the Great War
Black Poppies: Britain's Black Community and the Great War
by Stephen Bourne
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.08

5.0 out of 5 stars British history which didn't make it into the history books!, 9 Sep 2014
Stephen Bourne relates the lives of people of African descent in Britain during the period of the first World War. We find not only a thriving Black community at that time but many individuals who distinguished themselves in Britain's army, navy and air force.

I particularity liked the set of photographs from the period plus the extensive reference provided by the author. Having reached the centenary of the first world war, this book has to be recommended reading for anyone interested in the history of that conflict and should be included in the British school curriculum.

Bodies, Memories and Spirits: A Discourse on Selected Cultural Forms and Practices of St.Lucia
Bodies, Memories and Spirits: A Discourse on Selected Cultural Forms and Practices of St.Lucia
by Travis Weekes
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.56

5.0 out of 5 stars St Lucia's Kwéyòl Culture, 6 Sep 2014
This book focuses on rituals, dance, music and more which form part of the Creole (Kweyol) culture of St Lucia (Ste Lisi). The forms and practices described not only came out of the slave experience, but interestingly were also derived from West African settlers who arrived in the island in the late nineteenth century (after emancipation).

The author describes:

The Koudmen - a traditional work related activity where the community freely offers its services to one of its members in executing farming, fishing or house construction projects.

Koutumba - a ritual dance ceremony held at the time of someone's death.

Kélé - a ceremony practiced among the nineteenth century West African immigrants to St Lucia to give thanks to the Yoruba deities, Ogun and Shango.

Masquerade - which takes place during the carnival season.

The Flower Societies - La Woz ("The Rose") and La Magwit ("The Marguerite").

Papa Djab - a form of masquerade led by the figure of Papa Bjab (Father Devil).

Sèwénal - a tradition in which musicians and revellers move around the community playing instruments and singing.

Overall I was left with a feeling of how vibrant and creative St Lucia's Kweyol culture has been. There is also something of a sense of sadness since these practices are less widespread on the island and might be lost to future generations.

Drusilla Dunjee Houston was way ahead of her time when she published this definitive work on ancient African history. It deals not only with the African continent, but also other parts of the world where there has been African influence.
I first read this book in the 1980’s and still have the paperback edition on my bookshelf. As I now do most of my reading with my eReader, I was after a copy to add to my Kindle library.
An excellent book which I would recommend to any interested in African history.

Whilst there were some similarities to the first of the films in the Riddick series, I found it none the less very watchable and entertaining.
