5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent and enthralling!! Not to be missed!, 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Other than his semi-autobiographical piece "Tocororo" in 2004, this is Carlos Acosta's first venture into production. Not only has he produced this "Don Quixote" for the Royal Ballet, but he is also the principal dancer, alongside Marianela Nunez. As in "La Fille Mal Gardee", their exuberance is infectious and their enjoyment of performing together is obvious. More than any other version of "Don Quixote", Carlos Acosta has managed to put together a credible story to the adaptation of part of the book by Cervantes. The staging is colourful and exciting, the dancing full of energy, and the performers break with the tradition of silence on stage with some noise to show their 'joi de vivre' - probably to the annoyance of some classical purists!! As always, Carlos Acosta dances with precision and energy and both he and Marianela Nunez seem to defy gravity at times in their performance. Also commendable are Ryoichi Hirano and Laura Morera as matador Espada and his lover Mercedes. I also particularly enjoyed the innovative introduction of the four 'urchins', Luca Acri, Paul Kay, Kenta Kura & Michael Stojko, whose mischief and antics add much to this performance - and their dance skills are amazing! This is a 5 star production, one to add to your library and watch time after time.

2.0 out of 5 stars AMAZON PLEASE CORRECT YOUR BADLY FLAWED EDITING!!!, 3 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Firstly, please note that my review below was subsequently wrongly attributed also to the VASTLY SUPERIOR version of "Le Corsaire" by English National Ballet. I have had to delete this and re-submit it in order, hopefully, to correct Amazon's seriously flawed bad editing!!! This comment has been added on 20th April, 2015.

Unlike the previous reviews, I found this production very disappointing. The musical score has been so adulterated and watered-down that this is scarcely recognisable as being the Adolph Adam music we know - it is indeed piracy to call this performance 'Le Corsaire' when so little of the original has been retained, both in music and in choreography. Yes, there is some fine dance performance, and the camerawork is, in the main, good. The lighting is good with a few exceptions. The stage sets are minimalist and totally lack drama or any relationship to the theme, except for the finale, which does work as a storm scene.

I have recently seen English National Ballet perform "Le Corsaire" several times, and it far exceeds this in standard of dance performance, lighting, and stage sets. The original Adam music is lively, dramatic and appropriate. The choreography by Anna-Marie Holmes was excellent - way beyond this performance, with Tamara Rojo, Alina Cojocaru and Erina Takahashi all excelling as Medora, and Yonah Acosta WONDERFUL as Ali or in the roles of Conrad or Birbanto, while Joan Sebastian Zamora and Junor Souza also gave outstanding performances in various roles. May I commend Opus Arte to film that performance - much more of a classical performance, and a guaranteed seller!!

It is noticeable that this Kader Belarbi production does not even retain any names from "Le Corsaire" as we know it! We simply get - 'the Slave-girl', 'the Corsair', 'the Sultan', 'the wealthy Slave Trader' etc. Perhaps afraid of some copyright infringement? Why did he not have the courage to venture forth with something completely new and not poach on the name of a good quality classical ballet??

5.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas treat!, 24 Dec. 2012

Having recently seen the live cinema relay of the Royal Ballet performance of this classical ballet, it is a delight to own it in my ballet collection, especially with many of the same performers in the piece as were seen in the live relay. Steven McRae, Miyako Yoshida, Iohna Loots and Ricardo Cervera all excel in their principal roles, in wonderful stage settings and with great orchestral work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Performance!, 24 Dec. 2012

This is one of the most wonderful lively performances in my Classical Ballet collection. A delight to watch, over and over again! Ballet Nacionale de Cuba have amazing vitality in this colourful piece. I hope, with time, we may see a production with Carlos Acosta in the leading role in Don Quixote, either with the Royal Ballet or with Ballet Nacionale de Cuba. Cuban ballet is in a class of it's own, so let's hope we are soon to see more of their performances throughout the world and also on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lively performance!, 24 Dec. 2012

For any admirer of the wonderful dance performance of Carlos Acosta, this is a must-have DVD! The combination of Ballet and contemporary style is amazing in this semi-autobiographical piece. I wonder if Carlos will produce more such works when he begins to 'wind down' on his repertoire of Classical Ballet? Let's hope there is much more to come, but meantime, I cherish every one of his performances I see at the Royal Opera House or other theatres. I hope there will also be many other Classical performances by Carlos produced on DVD to add to the collection of treasures such as "La Fille Mal Gardee", "La Bayadere" and "Spartacus" which are already available. His dancing skills are unequalled!

These glasses proved quite effective in the theatre. The only problem was finding the correct distance between the eyepieces to avoid a 'double' image.
