This book is beautifully concise and to the point. It describes the problems that dieting causes - how the attempt to restrict food causes overeating - and it offers a way out of this vicious circle. A life-saver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every health advisor should read this book, 10 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a superb book, full of useful information about how to solve problems of the digestive system. It is a beautifully written, high quality book, which explains how the digestive system functions and how problems such as leaky gut can cause many other serious autoimmune problems via the mechanism of molecular mimicry. The author discusses FODMAPS (fermentable carbohydrates), SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), gluten intolerance and candida, plus the importance of adequate stomach acid and how to diagnose problems using an elimination diet. The book is laid out really well, with concise chapter summaries and many very useful tables to make the information easy to understand. It also includes details of Elaine Gotschall's Specific Carbohydrate Diet and the GAPS (Gut And Psychology Syndrome) diet of Dr Natasha Campbell- McBride. This is one of the best nutrition books in print. If health advisors prescribed this book to people with digestive and autoimmune problems, a huge burden would be removed from the NHS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Climbers, 12 Feb 2013

This is a beautiful book, full of great photos and information for climbers who want to come to Abruzzo. I am particularly glad that two local climbing areas are mentioned. I rent a villa near Castelli in Abruzzo (Villa Mandorla - see '[...]') and this book will make an important addition to the library of books and maps for walkers, climbers and skiers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive book., 13 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is excellent for many reasons. It analyses what might constitute a healthful diet based on both biochemistry/physiology, evolutionary principles and clinical trials. It is well written and accessible to the non-scientist, yet has enough detail for scientists or science-minded readers. It also makes good sense and isn't just a rehash of other low-carb books. I suspect that Paul will be attacked from the low-carb and the high-carb low-fat camps. For the former he includes too many carbs and for the latter he includes too much fat! The author has been criticised on various blogs, but he always remains very polite and professional (unlike many bloggers) so that's another plus.

Genocide: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You!!!!
Genocide: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brave and Informative Book, 10 Dec 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
James Carlson presents a difficult and controversial subject in a very conversational style, which makes the book quite easy to read. He is a biochemist and a medic, so he can approach the subject matter from different angles. He knows the basic chemistry of fat and cholesterol production and can therefore explain the low carb diet from a very basic ground-up view. But he also has a lot of clinical experience with patients, so that he can see the real-life effects that both low-fat diets and low carb diets produce. What is more, he has personal experience of the two diets, which adds to the weight of his arguments.
There are problems with the number of spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors in the book. It would have benefitted greatly from a jolly good proof-reading, and I hope Dr. Mike Eades and Dr. Mary-Dan Eades don't mind being referred to as Dr. Mary Eades and Dr. Dan Eades.. I'm sure they don't! I would also have liked more warnings of the dangers of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats.
These trivial errors should not be given much weight when considering the importance of the book. Yes, it is a rant from start to end, but the dogmatic view of the relationship between nutrition and health is so utterly damaging, that when one realises the extent of the damage, one cannot help but rant.. if you have the courage to do so.
James Carlson certainly has the courage and for that he should be congratulated. He also has the courage to ask the question 'Why was I so stupid?'. He had learned the biochemistry but, like so many medical people, couldn't put it into context.
I thoroughly recommend this book. It will help a lot of people recover from or avoid health problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book, 14 Aug 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is very well-written and explains concepts clearly and simply to make it accessible to anyone. It is really a comprehensive book on how diet affects health rather than just weight loss and I shall definitely keep it to read again many times. Dr. Eades also has an excellent blog which is worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heroic book, 8 Jan 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I read this book from cover to cover in one go. A staggering amount of work and research went into it, and it is a very comprehensive account of research, ideas and dogma related to health and obesity over the last century. It is a shame that many of the people involved did/do not have the same appreciation of what constitutes real science as Gary Taubes does. As a scientist myself I am horrified by the levels of arrogance, incompetence, dishonesty and fraud documented in this history.
It should be mandatory for every health profession to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, 11 July 2007

YES, this is the Atkins diet rehashed, but that is the diet that will save lives. The fact that this book is so amusing and easy to read, and that it offers yet more proof that low-carb DOES work makes it invaluable. A low carb diet has far more important benefits than just fat-loss.
The Atkins diet may be used to prevent epileptic seizures (see atkinsforseizures.com) and Dr Bernstein uses a version to allow both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics maintain their health (see diabetes-normalsugars.com).
One of the main criticisms of this diet is that it is expensive. Yes, decent food does cost a lot of money, only food full of rubbish is cheap. If you think that your health is worth investing a bit of cash in and you would rather eat real food such as stilton, butter and olive oil, then this is the book for you. If you are too much of a cheapskate, then you are free to continue calorie-counting your reconstituted chicken nuggets and synthetic low-fat spreads.
