5.0 out of 5 stars Criminal Negligence!, 2 May 2008
This review is from: Bruce Davidson: Circus (Hardcover)
An offence bordering on the criminal has occured. The fact this is the first time these images have been together in print is most certainly a crime against photography!

This is a beautiful book. Well observed well printed and a great size for the subject. The images show a great sense of observation and empathy without straying into sentimentality. Each image has a great narrative on it's own and as a body of work the book shows glimpses of many many aspects of life in the circus and peoples essential humanity. It's a real masterclass in documentary photography refined to the point of being a work of art.

A must have for anyone who appreciates a master photographer shooting from the gut and seing with their heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharepoint Designer Made Easy?, 2 May 2008
I really do recommend this book. It does exactly what it suggests in the title. I administor MOSS 2007 & WSS 3.0 sites on a day to day basis, but have only recently been able to make time to sit down and get fully to grips with Sharepoint Designer 2007.

The initial chapters waste no time explaining the nuts and bolts of Sharepoint Designer 2007 and how it interacts with MOSS 2007/WSS 3.0. However whilst it wastes no words getting right to the point it still manages to be clear. This means it is also suitable for someone new to Sharepoint, although though they may find the initial learning curve a little harder than an I.T. Pro. This is as you really need to be skilled with the MOSS/WSS central admin console throughout the book to perform many of the exercises.

In the mid and later chapters the book again wastes no time and has you doing useful and practical tasks in Sharepoint Designer all the time. I found myself spliting time between reading a chapter and fixing a problem in WSS that i'd been previously unable to deal with.

The CD has all the templates you need to do every exercise and also some excellent whitepapers and presentations. I also noted the book is full of usefull weblinks for all things 'sharepoint'.

In summary, an excellent value book for an introduction to Sharepoint Designer 2007 and what MOSS/WSS can do.

NOTE: My only (minor) critisism is that the coverage of CSS or any web related standards is pretty poor. Even to the point of suggesting use of deprecated html commands at one point. That said web training was not the purpose of the book so it's a minor point I feel. If you really want CSS skills then read CSS the missing manual which is a great book for this purpose.

FINAL NOTE: An informational warning for those who neeed it is that to use this book you need access to a IIS6, WSS3 and a SQL server. These can be downloaded as evaluations and installed on one machine. But be aware as for a novice to I.T. this pre-requisite may be a bridge to far.

Henri Cartier-Bresson/Scrapbook

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Scrapbook Ever Made..?, 8 Jun. 2007
In 1946 having presumed Henri Cartier-Bresson dead, a posthumous exhibition of his work was prepared in New York. Henri, upon finding out this amusing mistake, arrived in New york with a scrapbook containing 300 of his favourite images. He presented this to the gallery as a suggestion for his retrospective exhibition. The above gives insight into why, despite it being difficult to show anything new about such a celebrated photographer, this book is still unique.

Thames Hudson along with the Foundation Cartier-Bresson, have lovingly restored this facsimile of Henri Cartier-Bresson's famous scrapbook down to the smallest detail. The result is a fresh and new look at Cartier-Bresson

This huge beautifully bound volume gives a unique insight into what Cartier-Bresson himself thought was his best work. It also shows the context in which he chose to put it. Additonal information is provided by a wonderfully written forward by Martine Franck an introduction by Agnes Sire and an essay by Michel Frizot

In summary this book is a thing of beauty and a wonderful glimpse into the world of one of photography's true greats. It's also a book I fully expect to visit again and again. If you are an afficionado of Bresson you will still find this book a valuable addition to your library. If you have never been introduced to Henri Cartier-Bresson then this book will knock your socks off.

Hellen Van Meene: Travel Portraits
Hellen Van Meene: Travel Portraits

5.0 out of 5 stars New Work, 30 April 2007
I bought this book after interviewing Hellen Van Meene. I'll sum it up with some detail from that interview and some other thoughts.

I found myself very interested in the subject matter and by Hellen's approach to her work. Her work struck me as an excellent counter balance to the dry, objectifying commercial portraiture. The really poor shallow stuff we are exposed on a daily basis. In fact her images seemed the antithesis to this. Her prints often featured young girls dwelling in that transient moment in childhood adolescence. On the cusp adulthood. Her subjects often appeared awkward or vulnerable sometimes seeming a little uncomfortable in their own skin. Yet despite this there is an understated beauty to each image.

In Hellen's photographs there is a strong sense of realism. All of the models minor imperfections are on show. There are sometimes bruises, Goose bumps or blemishes all proudly on display. All of the photographs are taken in unmodified natural light, with models Hellen carefully chooses to avoid the hum drum classically beautiful look. The result of this hard-line realist approach occurs on two fronts. There is an unusual sense of honesty and feeling in the photographs but there is also an ethereal quality that is hard to quantify.

This book (Formerly called 'New Work') containins a selection of her work with London teenagers, Japanese children and work from Riga, Russia. The print quality is excellent. As on object of beauty or as a master class in a unique brand of natural light portraiture you would struggle to find a better book. Beyond that I need say no more, the book speaks for itself.
