Slightly disappointing..., 13 Jan 2012
I agree with many of the sentiments expressed by previous reviewers. I enjoyed Stone Spring and eagerly looked forward to reading this book. While the storyline itself is fascinating and the characters quite interesting, I was disgusted by the unnecessary, almost gleeful descriptions of gang rape and mutilation that were sprinkled liberally throughout the book. Agreed, those were savage times, but you don't need to shove excessive gore and cruelty down your readers' throats to make a book exciting or successful. Authors like C.J Cherryh and Iain M. Banks manage quite well without it.
