2.0 out of 5 stars Not awful, not great, 30 Nov. 2014
This review is from: You're Dead! (Audio CD)
This album, much like his previous albums, is somewhat hit and miss. But while previous albums have had some truly outstanding highlights that outweigh the low points, there's nothing on here that really keeps me coming back.

Certain tracks, such as 'Coronus, the Terminator', get close to reaching highlights from previous albums, such as 'See Thru To U' from Until the Quiet Comes and 'Orbit Brazil' from 1983, but tracks like this aren't nearly numerous enough to get me through the rest of the album. I particularly find tracks with Flying Lotus's own rapping/lyrics to be a bit self-indulgent and forced and unimaginative ('hold up, hold up, me and Dilla 'bout to blow some trees'). There are also some moments with some really interesting ideas that fall flat to me, like the piano melody at the start of 'The Protest', which sounds really interesting, and then gets drowned out by Flying Lotus's typical noisy hip hop beats we've come to expect. It's a shame it couldn't have been left a little more minimalistic like 'Unexpected Delight' from 1983.

The rest of the album seems full of uninspired noisy tracks to me, sort of like the harp improv. songs on Cosmogramma - which were OK considering the quality of some of the other tracks on that album - but there just aren't enough decent tracks to make up for that kind of filler this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars but if you manage to buy one recommended on the sp-forums, 13 July 2014
This review is from: Roland SP-404sx (Electronics)
The amount of effects, battery power, SD compatability, and built in sequencer mean this is probably the only sample you'd ever need. There are a few issues, however:

-Not all SD cards seem to work properly (in fact, most SD cards don't work properly), but if you manage to buy one recommended on the sp-forums, you can't go wrong.
-The sequencer goes starts to go a little out of time sometimes- for instance, tiny gaps whilst a pattern you've made is repeating, the quantise feature sometimes not working properly etc.
-Only being able to use one effect at a time. This is kind of annoying, but I can understand how it would make the using of the sampler more complicated. You can get around this by resampling samples with the effects... but it would be nice to manipulate the effects for multiple samples as you're playing back your patterns etc.
-It seems to be unnecessarily bulky and fragile. Even if it was the same size as the sp-303, it'd be OK, but carrying it around, its easy for the knobs to get damaged, and for the ports to feel like they're going to snap off if you knock them slightly whilst your cables are plugged in.

Despite the flaws, it's great for making little ideas and even full tracks if you get to grips with it. After a while, you feel like you breeze through the process of copying pads, adding effects, trimming them down, sequencing... it sort of becomes second nature, and that's when it becomes really fun.

This T-shirt, of all the t-shirts I own, shrunk fastest. I think after the 1st wash it didn't fit properly. Ignore the 'premium' in the title- it's just a standard cheapy shirt.

Monoprice Enhanced Bass Hi-Fi Noise Isolating Earphone - Silver

5.0 out of 5 stars So good for the price, 24 Jun. 2014

These earphones just died on me the other day after owning them for well over a year- that means they've lasted far longer than a couple of pairs of Sennheisers I've bought before. What's more is that the phones loop over your ears, and the cable is constantly being bent at a right angle from each phone, yet no short developed in either ear from this, so they're pretty robust for what they are.

The sound isn't great as you'd imagine, but I'd never go as far as calling it 'tinny' or anything- they're probably about equal to the cheapest skull candy earphones you can buy. I'll definitely be buying another pair as a spare pair of earphones

1.0 out of 5 stars Just bad, 24 Jun. 2014

I actually got it to work, yet the sound was terrible. Kind of like both speakers were playing only the left side. I barely paid anything for it, yet it wasn't worth the couple of quid nor the wait. Ended up buying a cheap creative labs sound card, which does much better.

For the money it's not bad, but it's failed me on more than 1 occasion, even though I was pointing it in line with the IR sensor of my camera. Not exactly sure what the problem is, but I mostly stick with my wired release now.

you get a lot of toffee, which is to be expected seeing as this is pretty expensive. The toffee itself, however, is mediocre to average

Really beautifully bound, and a great book. It's a bit on the pricey side, however, but then again all of the Clothbound Classics are. I'd recommend buying this as a nice copy to keep rather than something you're going to throw in your bag and carry around with you, as it really is a beautiful thing to behold!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works, 24 Jun. 2014

Spits out oil onto the first few things you put into it, so make sure you have some scrap paper to hand to 'drain' it before you use it on something important, like I nearly did with my dissertation. Also note that it's pretty heavy and bulky, which is good in the sense that it feels sturdy and probably won't break to easily, but not great in the sense that you won't exactly be carrying it around with you. All in all it's pretty good!

3.0 out of 5 stars Was faulty but..., 24 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Had to return it because the fan was buzzing loudly when oriented in a certain position. I thought the laptop itself was OK, but for the money it's not great. You're essentially paying for the portability, seeing as you're not really getting anything else special other than the processor. Case felt very sturdy and solid. The touchpad is definitely a weak point, as it is in most lenovo laptops. Setting the cursor to a high speed setting means that when you click with the left clicker, the cursor moves just by you hitting the clicker (which is part of the touchpad itself and is touch sensitive). This will mean that when clicking the URL bar, for instance, your thumb will come down, touch the touchpad, and by the time you've clicked, your cursor is an inch away from the URL bar and has clicked something else instead. I've heard a few people complaining about this issue, but not loads- so whether this will annoy you or not depends on how you use the touchpad perhaps. This certainly does not happen on macbooks however, which use a similar kind of touchpad.
