3.0 out of 5 stars You Don't need this speed on PS2, heres why.., 17 Feb. 2004
Gameplay -
You'd be excused on first play of thinking that the handling is nearly the same as that in Hot Pursuit 2. But after a while of playing you'll find that it's much more arcadey, and frankly better. There's still a certain element of realism but EA have favoured fun over it this time. Truth is that if you were speeding down tights streets and back alleys trying to avoid traffic whilst using Nitro Oxcide (NOS) at 180mph you'd crash, and crash and crash. But with the new handling is bloody amazing! After Burnout 2 this is the fastest game ever. The scenery goes whooshing past (on consoles not so great, but more on that later) with pistons at full blow and your vision blurring. Nothing is faster than the drag race mode. It seems simple, you drive in a straight line, shifting gears at the exact right moment and avoiding traffic. But, it's probally the hardest mode in the game. By the time you hit 190mph you cant see a thing, the builders are mere blobs and that car that seemed so far away has just left a mark in your lovely bonnet. Add to this looking at your speed-o-meter to know when to shift up and having to change lanes and it soon gets frustrating, but very thrilling. The place where most the action takes place is in Underground mode. Unlike other Need For Speed games this is about street racing in Fast and the Furious style, if Vivendi didn't have the rights to that this would probally be called that, so it's all about respect. 111 races in all is a mighty challenge, which starts off easy but by race 30 the AI will leave you in their dust. By winning races you earn money so you can upgrade your car (more on that in a sec) and when you upgrade your car you get more respect which means you advance to bigger races etc. Upgrading your car is probally the main attraction to this game, after all who wouldn't like to be able to design there custom made dragster? You can do simple stuff like change the colour of the Neon glow and paint work all the flame to gettin flame jobs and unique designs. You can also buy new engines, breaks etc but that isn't really much fun 'cos its under the bonnet and doesn't look like your supermodel paintwork. Downsides? there's a dissapointing number of cars totaling in at a mere 28. Which to be fair is enough but after Hot Pursuit 2 having 70+ licened cars including Ferraris and McClaren F1's it seems a tad weak. Biggest dissapointment for me though was the fact theres no replay mode. The fact that Hot Pursuits was so good is what's really annoyin, replays would of looked so much better flying through the air and winding through the back alleys.
Graphics -
This is where the game gets let down massively or is great depending on your point of view. First of all the consoles. It doesn't look bad on the 3 consoles but it just doesn't look good. Even the best of consoles (Yes, even Xbox) can't really handle the graphics that well, so credit to EA for making the game look that good but damn them for not converitng it from PC that well. All the lighting is blurred, some may think that that's for effect but it's not, and it's hard to see where you are going. After 15mins play my eyes started to hurt from trying to figure out where the track is. On PC though it's a different story! I don't have the best of PC's, far from it, but it looks bloody great on my monitor. The level of detail EA can squeeze out their engine is stunning, from the cars to tracks and lighting etc. This is what it should, and would look like if the consoles could handle it.
Lifespan -
Well unless you get the PC version (See graphics section for more convincing) which has a great online mode there isn't much replay value after completing the game 'cos you've played all of the levels so many times you'll porbally have got bored of them. Completing Underground mode should take 3 - 4 weeks though because it's a heck of a challenge. Online it's very fun, showing off you car and challenging other racers to a race, and it's even ok to play on 56k. Winninga races puts you up the rankings which means that more people wll challenge you etc.
Overall -
A very good driving game courtesy of EA. Vey quick and good for thrilss but also has quite alot of depth witht the car editor. Let down by the fact it's crap on consoles though. If you have a PC capable of running this don't hesitate to gho and buy this now, you won't regret it. If however you don't i really wouldn't recomend this. Bump the score up 10% for PC users.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Voice? damn right..., 28 Jan. 2004

If the White Stripes could of picked one person to do a cover it would of been this young lady. Her vocals are up there with Christina Aguilara and Delat Goodrem. Fell In Love With A Boy was a perfect single to launch her career but is no way her best. Each of these tracks shows he vocal talents to the full and are very catchy.
One of the hottest new talents around.

5.0 out of 5 stars a very good album, 24 Jan. 2004
This review is from: Room On Fire (Audio CD)
Strokes' first album was amazing, from start to finish it was near perfection. This album isn't as good as that but i didn't expect it to be. NME have been raving about this and i don't blame them, it's a great album. nearly all of the songs i like and would happily listen to again in 5 or 10 yrs time. If you liked their previous album you'll love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best rock band gets the Best of album the deserve., 24 Jan. 2004
The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been around for 20yrs now and they have only just got a Best Of album. But what a album. i agree with nearly all of the playlist ( Zepher song isn't in there when Universally Speaking is ) but most of the songs are from 1990+, it would of been nice to have some of the older ones. Never the less this is a great album thats worthy in any music fans collection. RHCP fans will adore this ( hardly been out of my cd player ) because this reminds you why they are the best band on the earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars 14 of the best rock tunes ever, 24 Jan. 2004
This review is from: Elephant (Audio CD)
With the realease of this album the White Stripes have made their mark in rock. I am tempted to call this the best album ive ever heard. From start to finish you dragged in, beaten round the head then spat back out. They do a great version of Just dont know what to do and the last 4 tracks leaving you wanting them to do another 5 new albums on the spot. Some may not believe the hype but when John Peel and the NME call this album the best of the 21st century you'd better take note.
One of, if not the, best albums ever. Like rock then get this. that simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, 24 Jan. 2004
This review is from: Call Off the Search (Audio CD)
Being a huge fan of Dido and a fan of Norah jones i bought this album. I could not believe that Kate ( who is only 18!!!! ) has such a amazing voice and talent. Her songs are beautiful and catchy, and ones you'd just love to listen to in any mood. This girl is sure to be round for years to come because voices dont get much better than hers.
Best album i've heard in the last 6months bar none.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, 23 Jan. 2004
This review is from: Absolution (Audio CD)
I have a freind who is muse mad, well matt bellamy mad anyway. She was raving about this album so i bought it. Was a very good thing i did because this is a class album. Muse's early stuff ( of which im not a fan of ) has nothing on this. Time Is running out (the frist single from it) Has nothing on the other tracks. This has proved that Muse are a great band and are capable of doing some great tracks. i love this album ( of course i don't admit it to my freind ) and is one of my most played
I'd reccomend this to anyone that has any interest in rock at all. This is one of 2003's best album, and anyone who disagrees has no taste in music. Ace.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tony Hawks Underground, 1 Jan. 2004
After a few new changes to the series last year NeverSoft have totally revamped the Tony Hawks series.
The Story -
No, you haven't misread it, this time there is a story behind the skating. Admittedly its not the most complex or original story but it's still a story. You play the game as yourself either by creating yourself the normal way or by the face mapping function ( more on that later). You're a small time skater from New jersey and, along with your mate Eric, you must make it big. When Rodney Mullen visits town he spots you two skating and tells you to get a sponser. After visiting various comps you and Eric decide you must do somthing that no skater has done before to get noticed. You end up doing a 30ft transfer off a building over a helicopter. Eric claims it was him that did the jump when the tape is shown and he gets the deal, and Pro status. You then get the idea top start your own Pro team. But first you must get other pro skaters backing, and to do that you must to tasks for them.
The Gameplay -
The two newest features are the ability to walk and drive. the walking in theory should be great, but it's just too awkward to judge jumps, whichs makes the ( rather crap ) stealth missions very hard and frustrating. It does make getting to high places easier and saves hard grinding. The drving isn't much better, the handling infact is a lot worse, but at least it's fun. The skating as always is perfect, Manual, grinds, and transfers all still here. You also have the wall kick ( ollie into a wall and hit X to kick off it ). The problem with this series is thinking of ways to vary the missions, Tony Hawks vetrans can complete this on hard in one day because all of the missions - get x score, hit z things - comes very easily to us because we mastered them back in THPS 3 and 4. The most innovative feature of THUG is the inclusion of the face mapping. If you have a digital camera or webcam you take a pic of your head, then you email it to Neversoft. Then they email back to you what you face would look like in the Tony Hawks world which you can download via your PS2 ( broadband required obviously ) and put onto your character. to do this you need to have your PS2 online, a pc, and a digital camera though, which not many people do. Along with this you can also make your own tricks and name them, build your own skate park, and design your own deck.
The Graphics -
This doesn't look to different to the previous Hwk games. Most of the bulidings are detailed as are the pedestrians and backdrops. Stand on top of a building in Moscow and look around you'll see no pop-up or blueness in the distance. It's not particulary great looking but for a skating game it's all you need.
The Lifespan -
I have the feeling this game has been dumbed down, even on Sick difficulty. Tony Hawks 4 had me playing for weeks trying to nail that last gap in the Zoo but i completed in just over a day on sick. Play it on very easy a brain dead monkey could do it, Easy is too easy even for the people who have never played a Tony Hawks game. Normal has just the right balance for newbies, starts off easy but gradually gets harder, but not so hard you wont complete it in 3 - 4 days. Sick is quite a big challenge for everyone except the Tony Hawks vetrans who will fly through it. It has online mode, and good multiplayer to stretch out the life though.
Overall -
This isn't a bad game, far from it, but it isn't anything that we haven't already seen in previous hawk titles. Gameplay, bar the driving and on foot sections, has been tweaked to perfection and it's a joy to play. But Neersoft have gone for a wider audience and made this game too easy when they should be doing the opposite. Maybe not worth a buy, rent it out for 2days and you'll probally complete it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, But No PES3, 22 Dec. 2003
Gameplay -
For the last three years FIFA has beat the Pro Evo series in the charts but has lacked the near perfect gameplay, And the real gamers choice had to be Pro Evo, But this year EA have closed the gap quite considerably. The gameplay and controls are now nearly as fluid as PES3. The only new feature to the gameplay is the "Off The Ball" mode, which quite frankly doesn't work to good. The idea is that as you have the ball you also control another player to try and position them for a good pass but this is very hard and most of the time works in the other teams favor. FIFA's big weapon as always is their licences which greatly out numbers Pro Evo. Lets face it you'd rather play as a team called Manchester Utd with Ryan Giggs than Forever Reds with Ron Graham. Fifa have over 300 teams going down to devision 3 and 10,000+ players with, it must be said, great likeness to the real players. Game modes vary from Penalty shoot-outs to full season tournaments. But it does lack some of the fun mini game of PES3.
Graphics -
Graphically this smashes Pro Evo into the ground. The players likness to the real players is quite frankly scary. The stadiums look beautiful with detailed crowds that add so much to the gameplay, when you kick a ball into the crownd they put their hands up to try and catch it. The camera doesn't really have a good position to show these graphics off at their best though, its so far out it makes runs very hard, especially when you have various players around you that you must dodge.
Lifespan -
As with most sports game this has near infinite gameplay long after you win all the cups. Completing all of the cups will take you 2 weeks+ and if you select a not so good team like Leeds it will take you alot longer. You can manage your team to a certain degree but if EA added a manager mode ala Champ Manager 4 it would put it miles ahead of the compotiton, and the Xbox hardrive would be perfect for this. Multiplayer is also great fun with a few new features but it doesn't beat PES which is undoubtably the Multiplayer king of sports games.
Overall -
So is it better than Pro Evo? no. But EA have closed the gap and Konami had better watch their back. If you need all of the real names and teams you should get this, but if you like fluid, responsive gameplay and dont mind about stupid team and player names get PES3.

The Story --
GTA 3
The game starts with you robbing a bank with your girlfreind, all goes well until you try and escape and your girlfreind shoots you and runs off with the cash. on your way to prison your police car gets ambushed by a local Mafia who are trying to save their man 8-Ball. you escape with him and as a result he reccomends you to his boss, Luigi. After doing Various Missons you move up the Gangster ladder and start to work for The Don. Now that you've got contacts it's time to get revenge on your Ex, and get back your cash!
VICE CITY
You play as Tommy Vercetti, a ex con who has just got released from prision after sevring 15yrs for his boss Sonny Forreli. When he gets back to Liberty City Sonny packs him off to Vice City to complete a drugs deal. Tommy gets double crossed and ends up losing the money and the drugs. Tommy now has to stay in Vice City to earn the money back that he owes to Sonny and to find out who's got his drugs and punish them!
The GamePlay --
GTA 3
GTA 3 has a living, breathing city. you can go anywhere, shoot anyone, do, to a certain degree, anything! The Game is spread out over 3 islands, Portland, Staunton Island, And Shoreside Vale. they aren't all open from the start though. The break out of 8-Ball left the first Bridge severly damaged and it must be fixed. The Driving is great, you do mostly driving so it has to be. The shooting is very good aswell, you have auto rageting by the tap of R1 but occasionally it locks onto the wrong person which can get annoying
VICE CIY
As with GTA3 you have a lvingm breathing city. but more so this time. Gangs walk in bunchs, have wars with other gangs, and Cops chase other criminals aswell as you.The Islands open up alot quicker this time, and the Islands are two and a half times bigger than those in GTA 3. Aswell as Cars theres also Motor Bikes and Helicopters. a big gimmick of Vice City is the 80's theme. This adds greatly to the game. Turn on the radio and you'll be greeted by over 9hrs of offical 80's tunes from Ozzy Osbourne to Brian Adams.
The Graphics --
Both are pretty impressive, if not pushing the PS2 to the limit. Theres pop-up and things go through walls but with gameplay like this you will not give a damn!
LifeSpan --
The fact that this is the closest we'll get to a living city that we can do anything and not end up behind bars in real life means that this has near limitless gameplay. After you complete all the main and side missions you will have funs for weeks just droving about and causing havoc! the same goes for Vice City but more so!
Overall -
These are two of the best games ever, if you haven't got these you really, really should. They'll entertain you for months after you have completed them. Many have tried to copy but you cant beat the feel of driving down Liberty or Vice City in a stolen car. PS2's Best!
