5.0 out of 5 stars This is Blues!!, 23 Aug. 2012

Why this guy isn't famous is a mystery-some of the most lyrical, tasteful and mean blues guitar ever recorded-he really is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars the sacerdotal art, 4 Feb. 2009

I can't really add anything to Gyrus' erudite reading of this extraordinary novel-I'm simply too dense- but what a heady brew of alchemy, structural anthropology, depth psychology, natural philosophy this is,wrapped up in some beautiful prose and a tale skilfully told.Patrick Harpur is some kind of throwback to days of the great polymaths- read his other work too- remarkable!

5.0 out of 5 stars reissue this now!, 27 Dec. 2008
This review is from: Mi Cyaan Believ [VINYL] (Vinyl)
This must be reissued. Why it hasn't already amazes me, considering the rubbish that's been unearthed from the vaults over the years. This album is a masterpiece, Michaels poetry and delivery are frankly breathtaking- and heavy-good god- check out "Roots".If you like Linton Kwesi Johnson (and if you do I'm sure you know this album already)you will love this.Again-please reissue it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired, 18 Nov. 2007
This review is from: Band of Gypsys (Audio CD)
Considering this album was given to Ed Chalpin to settle arguments over some highly dubious contract signed before Jimi became famous I can only imagine that it's true worth must have been overlooked by it's author and those around him who seemed intent on continuing to present him in the milieu of white rock'roll. What we have here is something completely different from the psychedelic Experience output.Hendrix's phenomenal improvisational ability seems to redouble over the bedrock of Billy Cox's liquid funk bass lines and Buddy Miles' precision gutbucket drummming, and although the songs may not be up to the standard of previous releases they have an earthy and funky quality to them and a cohesiveness lacking in much of the Experiences' live output. This album reputedly was the one that turned Miles onto Hendrix and listening now it seems like the least dated and most forward looking. It's a damn shame that this trio didn't get to record more together.

5.0 out of 5 stars The blues aint dead it just smells funny..., 18 Nov. 2007

Seasick Steve seems to have single handedly rescued the blues from the clutches of the purists and fret manglers who have colonised and unwittingly ruined the 20th Century's greatest art form. Blues is about story telling and experience and Steve Wold has converted his past of itinerant work and riding the blinds into a compelling and charismatic version of the delta blues that is all his own.Go to see him live : he is unique and inspiring which is rare these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Hypmotised Baby......., 18 Nov. 2007
This review is from: Knockdown South (Audio CD)
I suppose Jimbo could be called a blues revivalist, but he is much more than that: Buddy guy side man, producer, multi instrumentalist, songwriter etc with the muddy water of the Mississippi for blood. This album throbs with the sounds of the juke joints of North Mississippi and backwater honky tonks, like some sort of meeting of Junior Kimborough, Hank Williams and the Stones.
Utterly brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Class, 18 Nov. 2007
This review is from: Stay Out Late With.. (Audio CD)
I know the mere mention of country and western and swing, let alone in the same sentence is likely to strike fear into the heart of all but the most daring- but this release is pure class and quality: from the peerless musicianship (good God, Jeremy Wakefield is the Django of steel guitar), the witty song writing and lyricism (One Mans blues is Another Mans Good News), the beautiful vintage sound, I could go on. Please cast aside all prejudices and enjoy!!

Rate alongside Mona Lisa, Ulysses etc. I bought this on vinyl on Go Feet records in about 1982 as a student desperate to get hip to the sounds of reggae, on the basis of a four star review in the NME.
This record is a revelation. It takes you into the beautiful black heart of Rastafari and the harrowing experience of the African diaspora via the poetry of the bible, the otherworldly vocal harmonising of Cedric Myton et al and Lee Perry's miraculous production. It is truly ravishing and without doubt one of the greatest records of all time.
