Writing a First Novel: Reflections on the Journey
Writing a First Novel: Reflections on the Journey
by Dr Karen Stevens
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.71

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the How To Books, 3 May 2014
If you are struggling with your first novel (like so many of us), I would suggest that you don't bother with the shelf-loads of books which appear to offer the "best" way to write your novel and get it published. Whilst such books are useful if you have absolutely no idea whatsoever about how to tackle plot, setting, dialogue etc, they are limited to technical issues. Ultimately, the best way to learn to write is to read as widely as possible to get your own sense of what works and what doesn't. Then you need to simply write, read and revise until you are as happy as you can be with your work. The best advice I have received about writing has come from the insights offered by those who have struggled through it themselves and emerged with a completed novel.

Dr Stevens has collected some highly insightful essays from established writers who have willingly offered up their own experiences, trials and successes. I believe that the best way to learn how to do something is to engage with those who have been in your own position and have found their own paths to success. These reflections on the journey have provided me with much to think about. There have been several "aha!" moments for me and a lot of material for self-reflection. I have returned to the keyboard inspired and refreshed.

This book comes highly recommended because in the solitary world of writing it is good to share in the experiences of others who have already made their first journey and discovered their own paths.

I am a great fan of the Raven trilogy in which Giles unleashed his great talent for all things Viking. I was delighted to see that he was writing more in this area. I have not been disappointed with God of Vengeance. Giles explores the theme of honour, betrayal and revenge in great factual detail. The story built up to a bloody climax. I'm now eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Continued enjoyment, 22 April 2014

This, the second in the King's Hounds series continues the crime-solving. The story is based on real events. It's one of those tales that you have to finish, preferably in as few sittings as possible. As others have already mentioned, the translation does grate a little. Americanisms don't sit too well in a Medieval English tale. However, I am looking forward to the next instalment.

If you are fed up with chunky watches and want something with a bit of style this is the watch for you. Very easy to read. The carbon fibre effect is great. The picture here doesn't do the watch justice. I've had loads of admiring comments about the watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Weekend Read, 13 Feb 2011
This was one of those books that I browsed whilst visiting a bookshop. I didn't have much time but I managed to read the first chapter and I was completely hooked. I went home and bought the Kindle version. That was it! I sat and read it over a weekend because I simply couldn't put the thing down.

Great characterization and a very good story with a few unpredictable twists and turns. The research must have taken some time as I know many of the areas mentioned and everything came across exactly as it should.

I am looking forward to the next episode.
