This was a very engaging movie and entertaining, but could possibly be named an individual work in its own right - it bears very little resemblence to the book. The novel, while written for a younger audience, is darker and slightly edgier, as well has having a much expanded and very different plot.
However, it is an EXCELLENT movie. Those who complain that they find it difficult to understand the movie, or those that are new to Diana Wynne Jones, should read the book first - it helps in the understanding of the movie to a large extent.
